Are Cell Phones a Distraction to Students? According to Yue (2013), more people in the world have cell phones than toilets. Cell phones were once a luxury that only some adults were able to indulge in, but today you see them in the hands of many children and teenagers. Cell phones have now become a trendy way for youth to keep in contact with family and friends. However, when it comes to the appropriate usage of cell phones, some children lack self-control causing them to be a distraction to their learning. Cell phones have now become an easy way to for people to communicate through phone calls and instant messaging. However, many students have a tendency to socialize during inappropriate times such as in class, making instant messages a new alternative for passing notes on paper. This has cause cell phones to become a major distraction to student’s educational career and according to a survey done by the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association (2011), 72% of students agree that cell phone use is a major distraction and should not be accessible in class. Most cell phones nowadays are programmed with ringtones which are alarms that are triggered by simple phone calls or text messages from someone. Although the owner of the device has the ability to turn off this alarm so it won’t be triggered, they sometimes forget to do so before class. When this does happen, the situation is usually resolved immediately but still leaves an impact afterwards.
