There are many distractions in the world today to affect college student’s homework. With all the new technology it is easy to get off task and eventually lose interest in homework. Such as talking on the phone, sending text messages, reading emails, or being on social media like Facebook or Instagram. Social media, cell phones, and parties play a big role in distractions. Students are taking longer to complete their assignments while absorbing less information than they would if they were focusing solely on schoolwork. Cell phones make it possible to do pretty much anything on one now. A person can call; text, email, and can even pay bills on them. Studies show 90 percent of American adults own a cell phone, 58 percent of American adults have a smart phone, 32 percent own an e-reader, and 42 percent of American adults own a tablet computer. Cell phone owners find themselves checking their phone for messages, alerts, or calls when they don’t even notice their phone ringing or vibrating. Cell phones have become such a big part of life that their now something people can’t imagine life without. People now place them beside their bed when they sleep to make sure they do not miss any calls, texts, or other updates during the night. 93 percent of college students have a cellular device. It’s not uncommon to see a cell phone next to a student while they are completing an assignment because it has become a habit to pick your phone up immediately as soon as it goes off. Students with more cellphone use have a tendency of receiving lower grades, higher anxiety, and they are less happy. The higher users of cell phones are not able to control it and are glued to the cell phone. Any person it doesn’t matter what age, everybody needs to have alone time with their thoughts, recover from their daily stressors in a way that doesn’t involve electronic devices. After reviewing the article,“The Epidemic of Media Multitasking While Learning” By Annie Murphy Paul, it can be concluded that the author believes that most students cannot learn or do any homework related assignments without the usage of social media.With believing that most students cannot focus long enough on an assignment without using social media it provides evidence behind the author’s theory. Thus, with these certain types of studies it leads the author into believing that media multitasking shortens the focus of students in today’s society. A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
Popular singer and actress, Monica Denise Brown, once said, “Multitasking is part of my everyday life”. This quote is not powerful in any means, just simply true. Everybody multitasks, it it part of daily life. However, an author, Alina Tugend, wrote an article titled “Multitasking Can Make You Lose Umm… Focus” where she discusses many aspects and sciences behind the negatives of multitasking. Within the article, several different points are covered that show the reasons that people should not multitask.
Cell phones are gradually affecting American culture today because they are becoming a key part of everyday life. The cell phone enables individuals to communicate rapidly over great distances and obtain information like never before. People can now pick up the phone and get information on the weather, time, stock market quotations, and other things simply by dialing a few numbers. Cell phones connect the world together, to the point where individuals become almost helpless without it. The next time you find yourself waiting at a stoplight, take the time to observe the people around you. There will likely be at least one person in the surrounding cars who is talking on the phone. Even on the streets, people continue to chat on the phone. Cell phones are everywhere. One resident in Greenville, S.C. admitted that he uses his cell phone at least 15 times a day (Chany sc. 2). The cell phone is in such high use that the traditional phones in homes and offices almost become antique devices on display. Although traditional phones are still around, individuals are quicker to pick up their cell phone.
In summary, cell phones have positive and negative effect on our society today and is becoming a part of today’s subculture. They are more easily to use, can help save a life, and can keep in touch with friends, family, coworkers, and other business partners. Then again, they carry germs, has dangerous microwave radiation, can cause neglect in families, and eye strain. They can also have teens engage in unapproved relationships. In today’s age there is so much controversy on whether or not cell phones are helping the world or destroying it.
