Your doctor may be right, but some disorders can develop over time from life-changing events or activities. In one’s daily life, they can deal with several events or activities that may cause them to feel stressed. This stress continues to grow, making things difficult for one to be active. According to Dr. Cornelia Cremens, “Anxiety can develop from many uncontrollable factors, such as genetics, personality, and life events” (1). Anxiety doesn’t just involve and develop from genetics, but one’s personality and life-changing events, as stated by Dr. Cornelia Cremens. One’s parents or ancestors could have had anxiety in their genes and passed it down through generations. One may be dealing with a life-changing event like health or financial issues causing stress and leads to the development and increase of anxiety (Source 2). One may suffer from one, two, or all of them. The main anxiety disorders are Panic disorder, Phobias, and Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD). Panic disorders may be unexpected or caused by circumstances in one’s surroundings (Source 4). Negative effects and symptoms of having a panic disorder involve weakness, terror, and sweating (Source 4). The second disorder is phobias. A phobia is a fear of an object or situation one chooses to avoid (Source 3). Some examples of phobias one may suffer from could be the fear of clowns, bees, and heights (Source 4). Symptoms and negative effects of a phobia are technically in the definition, which would be fear. There are no symptoms or negative effects of phobias like sweating or nervousness, it’s mainly just about fear. The third disorder is Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which “is marked by unwanted, intrusive, persistent thoughts or repetitive behaviors” (DSM 1) (Source 3). Just like phobias, the symptoms and negative effects are technically in the definition. These symptoms and negative effects would be persistent thoughts or repetitive behaviors. Instead of suffering the symptoms from an anxiety disorder, they may choose to get treatment or find
ways to help cope with the symptoms. To emphasize, one who suffers with an anxiety disorder can go to the doctor for medication or treatment techniques to help cope with their anxiety disorder, but not everyone with an anxiety disorder will go to the doctor. They may try other methods to help cope with their anxiety disorder. One may get tired of the symptoms they deal with, so they go to their doctor and get medication or treatments to help. Others may choose to exercise, meditate, yoga, drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco or marijuana to help. According the World of Health, “Antianxiety drugs are medicines that calm and relax people who have excessive anxiety, nervousness, or tension” (1). Just like any other drug, they have side effects. Side effects of antianxiety drugs involve dizziness, headache, and nervousness. Side effects also depend on any regular medications one may take, medical conditions, allergies to any type of substances, etc. One may only care for the medication or treatment techniques if they help. Others choose methods that don’t involve medication that they think will help. For all these reasons, anxiety isn’t very exciting to have. It’s actually quite annoying and stressful. Life-changing events, stressful situations, uncontrollable factors all help the development and increase of anxiety. Anxiety can come in three different disorders that have negative effects and symptoms. One can help reduce the symptoms of their disorder with the help of one’s doctor or other methods they choose. Remember, if you go through tough, life-changing events or situations, you may develop anxiety. The best way to tell whether you are dealing with or suffering from anxiety or not, is the symptoms and a visit to your doctor. It’s best to know what you’re dealing with than not knowing at all.

This arachnophobic woman was so afraid of spiders that she would sweep, dust and vacuum twice a day to make sure spiders never settled in her home. She would clean, and then burn any bags coming from the grocery store to make sure that none entered the house from outside (2). This is an example of a person with OCD and a phobia. Some symptoms of Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are fear of germs, perfectionism, and rituals. When someone has OCD they are afraid of germs and might constantly be washing their hands or cleaning their room. Someone who suffers from OCD needs everything to be perfect and they might organize their closet by color size. Their rituals calm their anxiety. Certain rituals are things such as checking the stove a certain number of times to make sure it is off or tap their finger a number of times just because it makes them feel better.
