In this essay I will look at the Film Company and distributer Universal Studios, also known as Universal Pictures. I will analyse the logo, branding, and marketing within the corporate company. Overview of Universal Studios. With a long history in the film making industry, Universal Studios is the largest film studio in the world, with 9000 employee’s. The company produced ‘ET: The Extra Terrestrial’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ which are two of the highest grossing movies in all of time. The company is quite regular in introducing new films into the consumer market, releasing on average between 15 – 18 per year. Carl Laemmle who was a film exhibitor, and producer formed the American motion picture studio in 1912. The studio started off creating low budget films, until it was purchased by the Music Corporation of America, which formed it into the most profitable and largest company for films and television in the world. The company in-fact have multiple divisions, including Universal Television, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Universal Studio’s Parks & Resorts, Focus Features, Working Title Films, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Animation Studios One of the key divisions is Universal Studio’s theme parks and resorts that highlight the productions of film and television released by the studio, these being located in Hollywood, Orlando, Japan and Singapore. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer are arguably the most successful producing team in Hollywood history. Their films including “Beverly Hills Cop,” “The Rock,” “Armageddon,” and “Top Gun” have earned, according to a 1995 statistic from Entertainment Weekly, about $820 million. When one factors in the grosses for the last five or six films produced by Simpson and Bruckheimer (and Bruckheimer after Simpson’s death in 1996) the total will most likely exceed $2 billion.
Upon walking into Universal Studios again after spending the entire day there, is like walking into a whole new place. Outside the walls it’s business as usual, reality. People throughout our society recognize Target as a national icon because of its distinct logo. At one point or another people have seen the famous red bullseye that marks the store. The corporation uses a variety of visual elements and principles of design to successfully convey a message to its audience. Companies create graphic designs to differentiate from other competing companies.

They contribute to the competitively valuable capabilities. With the recent addition of two ships and having resorts/parks in Orlando, California, Hawaii, and a Disney Vacation Club; Disney sets themselves apart by having unique attractions that make consumers come back for more morning and night. They get so much traffic some people were rejected from their resorts and parks. Also, 90% of their cruise is booked each year. Tied, are studio and consumer product at 6.7. The consumer product is average across the board, but studio takes control of the ability to benefit from strategic fit with sibling businesses, brand image and reputation, and competitively valuable capabilities. Walt Disney began in 1923 with a short film called Alice’s Wonderland. It was co-owned by Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney. Disney moved forward into the future with very popular filmed entertainment such as Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi and so many more until the death of Walt Disney in 1966. Walt Disney was then successfully supervised by Walt’s older brother, Roy Disney, until his death in 1971 after the completion of his brother’s dream, Walt Disney World. It was in 1983 that Disney expanded its operations to include the Disney Channel and the Touchstone Pictures film label. When the new president and CEO, Michael Eisner and Frank Wells, came onto the scene they set out to maximize the company’s assets by opening its famous movies up to the TV syndication market and video cassettes. With the classics easily accessible and available at a lower cost the company grew to greater heights. The success continued in 1988 when Disney movies hit new box office heights bringing in more than $100 million. Then between the years of 1989 to 1994 chart toppers like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the Lion King launched the entertainment company to even greater heights. It was located in an old building on the northwest corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street. In the same year, fifteen more Independent studious settled in and around Hollywood. It has about 28 percent of the total US album market share and earns yearly revenues of $1.5 billion dollars. The label has one of the most impressive catalogs globally which include superstars such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Avicii, Kanye West and Bon Jovi. Universal, like all the other major labels, has sub-labels. Def Jam Recordings and Island Records are a couple examples of the many labels that exist under UMG.
