Art has many definitions that can be interpreted in several ways. Many paintings throughout history have changed the outlook of how we see art. For many individual artists, art is the ultimate expression of personal emotions. A variety of artists in the world can agree that conveying a hidden emotion or idea is better communicated artistically than being presented out loud. The saying “A picture is worth a thousand words,” should also be represented when describing the way a person feels when looking at an art piece. The starry night was painted out of pure memory from Van gogh 's final days of getting treatment for his mental illness. His strong use of light and dark themes suggests it 's implying life and death between the lit up night sky and the melancholy village. Van gogh painted it during a crucial time in his life with many believing that this painting could represent positive hope that his treatment was working at the time. The heavy use of lighting symbolizes his outlook on heaven. The stars in the night sky represent the guidance light can provide for whom seeks it. Van gogh effectively expresses space throughout his painting. Space is incorporated in the sky by creating a “connect the dot” like feature. This space is what helps lead emphasis to the vibrant moon. The cypress bush and church tower are playing as the role of nature and man pointing to the heavens. His usage of combining nature in this painting, shows that he has genuine respect for planet Earth and life. Despite some of the positive details of the painting Van Gogh still shares his darker, depressed feelings in the painting with the cypress bush and the overall consistent bluish theme to represent his life 's struggles. Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” wrote van Gogh to his brother Theo. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.
Art can mean many different things to many different people and was one of the earliest ways in which man has expressed him or herself to others, whether it was through cave drawings or hieroglyphics. It does not begin or end with just drawing or painting, items typically considered art, or the many other recognized facets of art including architecture, drama, literature, sculpting, and music. My research is based on Vincent van Gogh art, and two art paintings that I choose to study is The Starry Night, 1889, and the second art is The Sower 1888. “The Starry Night” by Anne Sexton describes her experience of visiting Van Gogh’s painting during a gallery showing. Anne Sexton’s Poem “The Starry Night” is written in reference to Vincent Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night sent to his brother. She writes this poem with a heavy hearted tone, and the understanding of Van Gogh’s work to be a destructive painting, full of darkness and longing for death to come. Sexton views the town at the foot of the hills as decaying and silent as it slowly disappear below the starry night. More importantly Sexton sees the tree that looks like the hair of dead woman drifting in the blue sky which is like a serpent that is sly and deceitful. Like the understanding of the evil of the sea in the times of the ancient near east, she saw the swirling sky similarly. Through this she then sees the night like a beast that brings chaos and destruct, removing all that is beautiful. For she says the even the eleven starts, so beautiful with the moon will be swallowing up by the beast of the night. She writes as if all of this was once beautiful and a source of life to this earth, however is now destroyed, and source of longing for the destruction of life.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.

The paining ‘Starry night’ was made when Van Gogh was in a mental asylum after he had an episode that resulted in him cutting of his own ear. The painting depicts the view from his asylum room, which Bennett could incorporate into his feeling of being trapped in a society that doesn’t accept him.
Vincent Van Gogh never gave up his style and insight in his early work compared to his later work. I will discuss the comparison of the Potato Eaters and Starry Night and even though there are obvious differences, the core of his passion and eccentricities can be seen.
Jackson Pollack and Vincent van Gogh are some of most famous artist before and after their time. Each artist has a similar and different painting methods that they use when painting pictures. There most well-known paintings are called “Number 1” and “The Starry Night”. The paintings give off emotion by how they look, but each one is painted in different ways. The public did not find their paintings wanting when they were made. The difference was how long it took for them to get recognized for their work. Lastly, the paintings gave different and similar reactions to people that have changed over the years of their existence.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.

Starry Night is recognized all over the world, being one of the most famous and well-known paintings of all time. While Midnight in Paris is not as widely known but still is quite famous as it won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. One similarity that you can see right away is that painting Starry Night is featured on the poster. The sky that Van Gogh painted is the one featured in the Midnight in Paris poster. As I mentioned, I want to dedicate my exhibit artwork that gives insight into either the artist themselves, the world around them as they saw it/ heir culture, or both and these pieces are all phenomenal representations of that. Paintings like “The Scream” and “Self Portrait with Monkeys” and “The Starry Night” give tremendous insight into the inner workings of the artists mind. There is no better reflection of how we see ourselves than they way we’d paint ourselves. What better to see how artist viewed the world around them than by studying how the painted it? In Van Goh’s “A Starry Night” the city below sleeps, but the sky is a swirling mass, seemingly alive with activity and energy and why? Because Van Gogh, a deeply troubled and tortured artists had a somewhat poetic and optimistic view on life after death, he believed that people journeyed to a star after death and from there continued their life just as they had on earth. “The Starry Night” is more than just a beautiful painting, it’s a laborious expression of the artists own personal beliefs and values.
