I am comparing my favorite painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to The View of Toledo by El Greco. Both paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring the night sky. Starry Night, 29 x 36 ¼”, is an oil on canvas painting currently located at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Starry Night was painted in June of 1889 by post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. View of Toledo was painted by El Greco in 1598-99 during the Mannerism period. It is oil on canvas measuring 47 ¾” x 42 ¾” and is currently located at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, NY. While living in Paris, Van Gogh was first introduced to impressionist art and was inspired by the color and light. “Inspired by these artists, he brightened his own palette and …show more content…
While in Venice, he studied under the well-known painter Titian. From Titian, he learned the fundamentals of Renaissance art. Around 1576 he decided to move to Toledo, Spain where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. Here is where he painted View of Toledo, which is considered the first landscape in Spanish art. I think this ominous representation of the city of Toledo displays the power of nature. It is as the sky could open up at any moment and destroy the ghost like city below. It is suggested that El Greco might have painted this landscape as part of a propaganda campaign to encourage Philip II to reinstate the court in Toledo after he abandoned it in 1561 (Piker). Mannerism style stepped away from the traditional aspects of Renaissance art. “Mannerist art represents tension and angst, opposed to the peacefulness of Renaissance art” (Cowie). Some also say this painting is meant to show an apocalyptic vision. “This is a landscape of heavenly apocalyptic power: a conversation between heaven and earth next to the cathedral spire. The scene of the town takes place at the moment before a storm. The heavens are literally at war with the setting sun against the thunderstorm that is about to happen” (El Greco). Starry Night and View of Toledo are both landscapes featuring a town, a church, and a beautiful night sky. Both artists used the contrast of light and dark to detail their paintings. They both also took liberties in arranging the cities the way they saw fit. Although these paintings are landscapes, their themes are quite different. Van Gogh’s starry night is a more peaceful quiet depiction of the town below. View of Toledo is a more ominous painting that depicts a town below an angry stormy
Lie spent much of his youth studying art in Paris and Norway (Rollins 2). While studying in Paris, Lie found great inspiration from the works of Impressionist artist, Claude Monet. After returning from Paris, Lie moved to New York City, giving art classes for aspiring young artists (Caldwell 2). During this period, Lie painted Dusk on Lower Broadway, and through this piece, one is able to see the heavy influence of Impressionism and the techniques of Claude Monet reflected beautifully.
During Vincent Van Gogh’s childhood years, and even before he was born, impressionism was the most common form of art. Impressionism was a very limiting type of art, with certain colors and scenes one must paint with. A few artists had grown tired of impressionism, however, and wanted to create their own genre of art. These artists, including Paul Gaugin, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Paul Cezanne, hoped to better express themselves by painting ...
One focal point in Twilight in the Wilderness is the sun. To bring the attention to the sun, Church uses the contrast in the colors in the painting to his advantage. He uses broad contrast as well as a focused contrast that reveals the main focal point. The broad contrast deals with the colors in the sky and the lack of the color of in the lower half of the painting. The brighter colors in the sky in comparison to the dull colors in the lower half of the painting draws attention to the brighter sky. Within the sky itself, Church uses the different colors and different color temperatures to bring the viewer’s eyes to the main focal point. The warm yellow colors being next to the cool and dark teal and red-orange colors emphasizes the brighter, warmer yellow of the sun and brings attention to
The image is set inside ‘bedroom in Arles’ the room’s walls are stamped in bloody handprints. The centre of attention is a decapitated aboriginal man, with blood shooting from his body merging into Van Gogh’s appropriated painting ‘Starry Night’. The man appears to be posing in a very exhausted way. In front of this aboriginal man are two be-headed heads, these heads seem to resemble a European marble-like statues. The bedroom is an unfinished room layering nicely over Vincent’s ‘Starry Night’.

This Starry night painting was created on a medium sized canvas, being 2′ 5″ x 3′ 0″. This oil painting is dominated by a moon and a star-filled night sky. This part of the artwork takes up three-quarters of the picture and appears turbulent, even distressed, with intense swirling patterns that seem to roll across the surface like waves. It is filled with bright orbs, including the crescent moon to the far right, and Venus, the morning star, to the left of center—surrounded by many circles of bright white and yellow light.

Vincent Van Gogh never gave up his style and insight in his early work compared to his later work. I will discuss the comparison of the Potato Eaters and Starry Night and even though there are obvious differences, the core of his passion and eccentricities can be seen.
...ter. His focus on nature and organicism is illustrated through the de-emphasis of the couple and the boats. The down-to-earth tone that the combination of the elements creates is magnificent because it just shows the effort and time Vincent Van Gogh put into to creating this highly sought after work of art. Starry Night over the Rhone will forever be one of the most distinguished, most sought-after, most popular artworks in the world, and it’s all thanks to the one and only Vincent Van Gogh.
