Starry Night vs. Midnight in Paris
In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
Starry Night is recognized all over the world, being one of the most famous and well-known paintings of all time. While Midnight in Paris is not as widely known but still is quite famous as it won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. One similarity that you can see right away is that painting Starry Night is featured on the poster. The sky that Van Gogh painted is the one featured in the Midnight in Paris poster. The movie (for the most part) takes place in Paris, the place where Van Gogh first sent Starry Night (among other paintings) after he finished painting it. They both do have the main colour that is blue and the artworks share the similar sky. That includes the same shades of blue (and very little green) making up the swirls in the sky. As well as the yellow/white, circular objects that represent the moon, stars, and the glow coming from these celestial objects. There is even the sky in which Van Goth painted included in the poster.
In Midnight in Paris, you are able to see some buildings that look lifelike. This artwork is a realistic one that needs to depict a concept from the live action film. However, the starry night is abstract. You are able to decipher what everything is in the painting. However seeing the swirls in the painting (particularly in the sky in the hills), makes you see that it is not
