The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts. Appropriation is a strategy that has been used by artists for millennia. It involves the intentional copying, borrowing and alteration of pre-existing and often popular works. Many artists believe they are re-contextualising or appropriating the original imagery, allowing the viewer to renegotiate the meaning of the original in a different, more relevant, or more current context and that in separating images from their original context, they allow them to take on new meanings. Artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Gordon Bennett use appropriation as a form of bringing new, often personal, meaning to an artwork such as Gordon Bennett’s ‘Outsider’. …show more content…
‘Outsider’ is dated from 1988 and appropriates two of Dutch painter Van Gogh’s paintings. The painting focuses on Bennett’s struggle for self-identity as an Australian of Aboriginal and Anglo-Celtic descent. Bennett’s ‘Outsider’ uses appropriation to convey a darker message of the search for self-identity and the cruelty towards aboriginal people in Australia. Bennett chose Van Gogh’s paintings ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Bedroom in Arles’ to appropriate from as he associated the intense and energetic brushstrokes and brilliant colour contrasts with his struggles.
‘Vincent’s bedroom in Arles’ displays a calm mood whilst Bennett’s appropriation becomes the site of violent conflict that involves complex and intersecting personal and cultural histories The paining ‘Starry night’ was made when Van Gogh was in a mental asylum after he had an episode that resulted in him cutting of his own ear. The painting depicts the view from his asylum room, which Bennett could incorporate into his feeling of being trapped in a society that doesn’t accept him. Symbolism is Gordon Bennett’s way of expressing his opinions and beliefs into his artwork so people can achieve a deeper understanding of his life and struggles with identity. The marble-like heads on the bed represent modern art and how the indigenous community is repressed from it. Their eyes are closed and their mouths are shut which symbolise the deafness and muteness of the indigenous community when relating to modern art as it is seldom seen. The open window in the artwork is a representation of Bennett’s need to escape from this harsh reality that suppresses his community and background and the knocked over chair emphasises the urgency to do this. Bennett’s painting depicts the figure of a headless Aboriginal man that has an animated presence. A gush of blood red paint shoots into the sky from his body and bloody handprints are stamped across the walls all to represent his repressed indigenous heritage making the artwork a very personal piece. Bennett
says, “…my work is very personal . . . and there is something cathartic in it for me. I think that if other people can empathise enough there may be something cathartic in it for them, too.” Gordon Bennet used appropriation in his artworks as a way of linking his life experiences with other artist’s works, which breathe new life into them. He used appropriation in ‘Outsider’ because he associated his struggle with identity to Van Gogh’s insanity. It adds meaning to his artwork as it has incorporated two well-known pieces into a new one, which expresses an entirely different meaning whilst keeping the original intensity. The Outsider is a success in relation to the communication of the piece. His message can be easy analysed and understood and the use of appropriation brings new life to the paintings. Therefore Bennett’s artwork is a truly inspiring piece that can teach the importance of expressing beliefs and not forgetting the world’s vast cultures and communities.

The buildings symbolise a ‘civilised society’. (Molan, 2011) However, it is the opposite of civilised as the Indigenous figure shows a confronting image of being hanged while the other figures witness this action and staring at this figure curiously, as he is different from them. The distance between the white figure jack-in-the-boxes is far away from the Indigenous figure, as they are near the buildings – creating a cultural distance towards the Indigenous figure. On one hand, it is holding a torch is a symbol of hope but on the other shows a vicious and cruel mistreatment to Indigenous Australians.

“The Starry Night” by Anne Sexton describes her experience of visiting Van Gogh’s painting during a gallery showing. Anne Sexton’s Poem “The Starry Night” is written in reference to Vincent Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night sent to his brother. She writes this poem with a heavy hearted tone, and the understanding of Van Gogh’s work to be a destructive painting, full of darkness and longing for death to come. Sexton views the town at the foot of the hills as decaying and silent as it slowly disappear below the starry night. More importantly Sexton sees the tree that looks like the hair of dead woman drifting in the blue sky which is like a serpent that is sly and deceitful. Like the understanding of the evil of the sea in the times of the ancient near east, she saw the swirling sky similarly. Through this she then sees the night like a beast that brings chaos and destruct, removing all that is beautiful. For she says the even the eleven starts, so beautiful with the moon will be swallowing up by the beast of the night. She writes as if all of this was once beautiful and a source of life to this earth, however is now destroyed, and source of longing for the destruction of life.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.

The article Artists Mythologies and Media Genius, Madness and Art History (1980) by Griselda Pollock is a forty page essay where Pollock (1980), argues and explains her views on the crucial question, "how art history works" (Pollock, 1980, p.57). She emphasizes that there should be changes to the practice of art history and uses Van Gogh as a major example in her study. Her thesis is to prove that the meaning behind artworks should not be restricted only to the artist who creates it, but also to realize what kind of economical, financial, social situation the artist may have been in to influence the subject that is used. (Pollock, 1980, pg. 57) She explains her views through this thesis and further develops this idea by engaging in scholarly debates with art historians and researcher, and objecting to how they claim there is a general state of how art is read. She structures her paragraphs in ways that allows her to present different kinds of evidences from a variety sources while using a formal yet persuasive tone of voice to get her point across to the reader.
As I enter the Gioconda and Joseph King Gallery at the Norton Museum of Art the first thing that Caught my attention was a painting measuring approximately at 4 ft. by 10 ft. on the side wall in a well- light area. As I further examine the painting the first thing I notice is that it has super realism. It also has color, texture, implied space, stopped time, and that it is a representational piece. The foreign man sitting on the chair next to a bed has a disturbed look on his face and is deep into his own thoughts. It’s as if someone he loved dearly just experienced a tragic and untimely death. He is in early depression. I could feel the pain depicted in his eyes. A book titled The Unquiet Grave lying open on the floor by the unmade bed suggesting something is left unresolved. The scattered photos and papers by the bedside cause redintegration. The picture of Medusa’s head screaming on the headboard is a silent scream filled with anger and pain, yet it cannot be heard. I feel as if I am in the one sitting in the chair and I can feel the anger, and regret.

In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
But, when they were made no one gave them any recognition until time had passed for the artist. Pollack painting got famous a year later from his painting review when a life magazine article featured Pollock. His arms crossed and had a cigarette dangling from his lips, standing in front of one of his swirled, caffeinated images. What was written the caption of the photograph asked, “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” A powerful art critic named Clement Greenberg insistence that Pollock’s work represented a new, authentic American art. After that Pollock’s success was achieved over a period of years of making gesture, line, texture, and composition the very subject of his canvases. Van Gogh didn’t receive any recognition from his art-work on “The Starry Night,” or any of his piece of art until after his death. After many years later painters where moved by Van Gogh’s paintings in both heart and soul. Now it can’t be said that “The Starry Night” was worth as much as the rest of his paintings, but it has been known that his paintings are worth around 80 million
Art is an integral part of society. It is imbedded deep within human culture and has been around since nearly the beginning of humankind. How people view art greatly differs, not only between cultures, but between individuals. So many different meanings can be extracted from a single piece of work, which leads to the complexity and beauty of art itself. The meaning behind a work of art is not always what is important to people, it can also be the aesthetics. People like art that is pleasing to the eye as well as to the mind.
