The major task of the designer of any movie poster is to make the poster visually interesting, so that it captures the attention of its viewers. When people first glance at a movie poster, what catches their eye? What draws them in and makes them want to immediately purchase a ticket? Is it the usage of bright colors (or lack thereof), certain actors or directors they like, or is it the overall design of the poster? While certain posters leave a lot to the imagination in terms of what the movie is about, the movie poster for The Expendables 2 efficiently introduces the audience to what they can expect from the film.

The phrase, “Back for War,” is to the left of the main character, letting viewers know this movie is a continuation to the battle introduced by the first movie. Most movie posters include a symbol of some kind. Although there is no specific symbol depicted on the poster, the graphic is full of symbolism. This essay is an analysis of two advertising posters, one of being a modern piece of media, the other being aimed at the previous generation. I will be reviewing posters from Coca Cola and Benetton, the latter being the modern piece of media in this comparison.
What captures the attention of people when they view an advertisement, commercial or poster? Is it the colors, a captivating phrase or the people pictured? While these are some of the elements often employed in advertising, we can look deeper and analyze the types of appeals that are utilized to draw attention to certain advertisements. The persuasive methods used can be classified into three modes. These modes are pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos makes an appeal to emotions, logos appeals to logic or reason and ethos makes an appeal of character or credibility. Each appeal can give support to the message that is being promoted.
The advertisement's rich red coloring immediately strikes a viewer with exciting and salacious overtones. The red lettering, border, cigarette package, and swimsuit all emphasize social and physical pleasure. The other colors' absence only strengthens the red coloring's implications.
In today's world of consumerism, there is great competition among businesses to sell their product. It goes without saying that in this complex society exists modern technology that has lead to the development of various media platforms. In turn, these various platforms are used by corporations to advertise their product. The first material a viewer will see is the individual strings of the large patches. These patches are all over the advertisement. Other patches on the advertisement are the yellow Utah shaped street sign with the sports bike inside to symbolize the motorcyclist who ride in Utah. Another major material used is the black leather jacket background. Every motorcyclist knows that a leather jacket is a clear sign of a motorcyclist who is either a casual cruiser rider or a one percenter. In the advertisement they have different pictures from the movie of sword fighting and also characters in the film. Also the advertisement’s background is blood red. As soon as you look at it you can tell that this movie is an intense action film. The Kill Bill magazine advertisement accomplishes its purpose very well by its eight person sword fight picture, explosive entertainment, and catchy background.

An example of how different types of film (e.g. comedy, horror) poster use these forms and conventions to attract a certain type of person (e.g. teenagers, horror fans) would be a really scary horror film, which will use eerie images in order to appeal to horror fans. A successful film poster will accomplish attracting the target audience and persuade them to come and watch the film.
