Who am I? What’s my purpose in this world? What makes me do things certain ways than other people? Am I one of a kind? If I am who is this person always following me around in bright daylight but leave me in pitch dark? Yes, I am talking about the shadow of ours which Johnson emphasize in this reading and gives us many different aspects of its meaning. We live in a world filled with different ways of life. Does that mean we all are losers in each other eyes because we do not follow each other ways of life? Of course not it but it 's a norm or should I say it 's like our shadow follows us everywhere. We tend to think what I am doing is the best ways of life anything else is just there for us to criticize. I do feel like I am being looked down …show more content…
Johnson argues, "The shadow is the part of us we fail to see or know," (4). What I think he means by this is that the shadow can be an outlook for the unlived life caused by a specific pattern of life decisions. I strongly agree because a lot of times we deny the realities and are unable to face the truths. The way Johnson explains shadow is not the way I understood shadow before, rather just understanding that a shape is created by a body coming between rays of light and a surface. Now the word shadow has a deeper meaning in my life because it taught me that if I have the right mindset it can change the outlook I have on my life. In the society I grew up in I was taught not to fail and I could not be seen as a failure. For instance, when I was younger we would get rewarded if we finished our daily chores and homework. If we did fail it would be a huge deal and the people you knew would see you totally different than your other siblings. Which is why in the present, failure doesn 't exist in my dictionary. I think it would be beneficial if we were to care about shadow because of how it could affect us in life by helping us make better choices and lead us to a certain realization that at some point in life we have to grow …show more content…
When you think of shadow and light, you might think they are not associated with each other, but Robert Johnson states, "To make light is to make shadow; one cannot exist without the other" (17). He means that perhaps a certain circumstance in life may appear only dark to you; however, if you look deeper there is a bright side to it. When you construct light in the dark what do you see ahead of you? You see the shadow. Before I saw light as the natural sight that made things visible. Now I see balance with light in my life. In my dark situations, I can find the light. For example, when I stress about writing an English paper I decide to look at the positive and see how it 's challenging me to accomplish my goals in life. Light and balance are important for people because it can decrease the anxiety or stress in one 's life. You can look beyond the terrible situation and get passed it which can help you be
In the novel Grendel by John Gardner, the protagonist is a beastly creature, of whom the title of this novel takes after. Grendel closely follows a monomyth formed by Joseph Campbell. This monomyth is based on the belief that “the mind of each person has inherited archetypes that are either repressed or manifested through the experiences of the individual.” Something incredibly significant in the interpretation of this theory is “The Shadow.” Based on this monomyth, this is the part of the mind that contains our darkest desires and urges.
Susan Wolf, born in 1952, is widely considered one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th and 21st century. One of Wolf’s most renowned works is The meanings of Lives, which drew a lot of attention in the philosophical world for a number of questions that arose from it. Arguably her most widely debated and questioned assertion in The meanings of Lives is “If you care about yourself you’re living as if you’re the center of the universe, which is false.” This however I don’t not believe to be true. Every human being, no matter how successful or unsuccessful, has the right to care for them sleeves and not believe they are the center of the universe while doing so.
Not only is human connection vital to live a happy and joyful life, but it is necessary to create a legacy, and thus live on through others. But in order to do this, one must first overcome their ego and their sense of self. Once all of the “I” thoughts are gone, one can relate, but fully understand, the higher powers as well as other human beings around us. However, it is important to accept that we may never fully understand the driving force of this universe. While it can be experienced, and we can briefly get an idea of what it is, it is impossible to define these concepts in words, because we don’t have a language that transcends what we can understand. And though many recognize that these concepts could never be fully understood by the human brain, determined minds continue to ask questions that will never have an answer, “pushing their minds to the limits of what we can know” (Armstrong,
A human being is a complicated entity of a contradictory nature where creative and destructive, virtuous and vicious are interwoven. Each of us has gone through various kinds of struggle at least once in a lifetime ranging from everyday discrepancies to worldwide catastrophes. There are always different causes and reasons that trigger these struggles, however, there is common ground for them as well: people are different, even though it is a truism no one seems to able to realize this statement from beyond the bounds of one’s self and reach out to approach the Other.
Yet as we journey from the dark to the light in Aeschylus, we cannot leave the dark behind – the darkness breeds the light.
My Sisters Shadow follows the lives of Joan and Laurie Connor. Since childhood, Joan had always felt inferior to her sister. Joan sensed her sister Laurie was their father’s favorite daughter, and this was affirmed the night he committed suicide. One of Joan’s strongest childhood memories was the day their father asked her to get Laurie for him. Seeing how he was clearly distressed, Joan still came back to lie and state, Laurie was busy with their mother and could not come to him. As Joan walked outside, a gunshot stopped her in her tracks; her father had taken his life. This scene plays over and over in her mind throughout the movie.
It can be argued that the theme of light VS darkness is used to good
...alters the meaning behind light. Instead of being seen as something that is perceived as comfortable it has been altered to bee seen as painful and daunting. Just as a fire can keep someone warm and science can save many lives; if one gets too close one can get burned, in Victor Frankenstein's case it led to his death.

Ged, the main character in The Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin, through an act of pride and spite unwittingly unleashes a powerful shadow creature on the world, and the shadow hunts Ged wherever he goes. After failing to kill Ged the first time, he learns the only way to destroy the shadow is to find its name. What Ged must realize is the shadow was created by the evil in his own heart. Also, the shadow is not entirely evil, and Ged can actually draw strength from it. In doing so, Ged will realize that the only way to discover the shadow’s name is to discover that he and the shadow are one. Carl G. Jung in Man and His Symbols, describes the shadow as containing the hidden, repressed, and unfavorable “tendencies” of the conscious personality. “Such tendencies form an ever-present and potentially destructive ‘shadow’ to our conscious mind.”
Loneliness and Its Opposite, My Dangerous Desires and Beggars and Choosers collectively address gender, sex, sexuality, race, class, and bodily capacity. Loneliness and Its Opposite examines the ethics of disabled persons fulfilling their erotic desires. My Dangerous Desires discusses growing up queer, in a lower class biracial familyl. Lastly, Beggars and Choosers challenges how race, gender, and class can impact one’s reproductive choice. Each category of these books define the value of a body, and unfortunatley, in today’s world, some bodies hold a higher value than others.
Anger, selfishness, violent tendencies, the quest for uncontrollable power, and sexual desires are all undesirable traits which are frowned upon by society, and are concealed to avoid scrutiny. These traits can be referred to as one's shadow. The shadow is the repressed unconscious side of a personality (The Shadow Archetype). The shadow is considered to be a dark force because it consists of all the negative emotions and behaviors of an individual that they choose to hide in order to avoid society’s pressing judgment. In literature, the shadow can carry negative or evil qualities, as seen in many texts that revolve around a character’s struggle with some form of a shadow. The shadow, whether a physical being or a darkness within, grows in response to knowledge of culture and experience; it sees the evil in society and uses that information to grow as a threat to goodness. When the shadow builds it is usually repressed because of its threat to humanity. Even though the shadow is usually repressed, fought against, undeveloped and denied, the shadow should be confronted in order to know and understand one's true self. One must be self-aware of his/her physical or inner shadow, learn how to fight against it or deal with it, be prepared to struggle against it’s darkness or prevail against it by finding light, and ultimately find a resolution between himself/herself and his evil side.
The shadows are the distractions people seem to like best resulting in basic needs eating, drinking and surviving. Furthermore this could also include fun and games, everyone seems to be caught up in this no ...
