Time management is the ability to use time effectively or productively, especially at work. Time management is very important for everyone, especially engineers. Professional Engineers have tasks that must be done before a specified time determined by the client. World-class engineering students organize their tasks and always do them on time, divide their work on different periods, sleep early in order to manage their time effectively. I used to procrastinate a lot in high school; however, procrastinating does not work in university. I had to change my way of thinking and my way of organising my time in order to adapt to university life. It became worse each day, especially in the midterms weeks. I stressed out and could not think of anything else but panic and what would happen if I fail this course or get a very low grade on that course. However, I have learned that if I want to cope the stress, I must manage my time. When I procrastinate, the assignments that I have to do become harder because I have less time before the deadline, which causes stress. If I manage my time, I do each assignment on time, start with the others, and give myself time ahead of the deadline. Moreover, friends and family cope stress. If I am feeling stressed because of the assignments or exams I have, I can talk it though with a friend or a family member to feel relieved somehow, and it worked with me couple of times. When I work with students or in a study group, it relieves stress and make me always think positively. I do not have to see a psychiatric to talk to him about my stress, I can tell my friend or my brother about it. They will not be expected to solve the problem, but it is enough that they allow me to talk to them
Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
How to Deal With StressMany students go to school full time, and hold a part time job to earn money for school. Most students have about four classes, and each of the teacher’s of these classes gives an average of about an hour of homework each night; that averages out to four hours per night of homework, plus a part time job. School causes a lot of students stress because there are so many things to do, and so little time to do it. Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life; and is not a disease. It is not necessarily good or bad; however, reactions to stress can be harmful. Lack of time puts the stress on many students, and causes students to often procrastinate because they are constantly trying to meet deadlines and they don’t have the time to work on their assignments. Many students feel their grades are important; they need plenty of time to work on their work so they can do good. I can relate to them because if I get a low grade I get disgusted because I put a lot of time and effort in doing that assignment. But I think that a lot of the stress from school is caused, not only by the teachers, but also from the students to do well. Students put too much stress on themselves. A student just has to learn to manage their time well and just do as good as possible. Stress management involves the effort of that student to make emotional and physical changes.
In college, just about all students procrastinate in some type of way. They do not realize that they need to stay ahead of their work and stay caught up. Students do not realize that procrastination can become a habit and it can ruin a person’s life. They also do not realize that procrastination can be a burden on them. Procrastination can break students in college. Students in college may struggle because of procrastination.

No matter who a person is or what they are doing, at one point or another, everyone procrastinates. In the article, The real reasons you procrastinate—and how to stop, Professor Timothy Pychyl of Carleton University claims “It usually happened when people fear or dread, or have anxiety about, the important task awaiting them. To get rid of this negative feeling, people procrastinate—they open up a video game or Pinterest instead” (Swanson, 2016, pg. 2). Pychyl’s point in Swanson’s article is that procrastination happens due to the stress of a daunting task, and this is a common part of many lives. There comes a point when a person is under a great deal of stress or anxiety because of a deadline that is due, yet they consciously make the decision to put the task aside in order to focus on something else. Everyone does this exact thing at one point, yet scientist and psychologists wonder why. It is because procrastination is a natural event that occurs throughout a person’s life. While some people’s procrastination may not be as obvious as others, there is still a time and place where each person procrastinates. Within Amy Novotney’s article Procrastination or ‘intentional delay’, University of Calgary psychologist Piers Steel, Ph.D. in his meta-analysis reports that “80 percent to 95 percent of college students procrastinate, particularly when it comes to homework” (Novotney, 2010, pg. 1). The solution for students can be as easy as sticking to a goal or as hard as denying themselves a prize when they missed the deadline on a project. The type of solution a person uses depends on what works best for that student, but a schedule to help stay goal positioned never hurt.
Time management is essential in the workplace and it can help eliminate many other problems that could arise if time is poorly managed. By using the various time and stress management techniques available it is possible to reduce or even eliminate stress. A person who manages their time well can benefit from an organised, manageable workload with enough time to complete the jobs and tasks that are of any importance. Time management can have a direct effect on a persons stress levels and it is important that stress levels are kept to a minimum to ensure optimum performance, efficiency and general well being.
The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).
Stress is difficult to wash away or think about because it is everywhere, but individuals should not give up on themselves or family members that are trying to be helpful. There are many things people can try to relieve stress and will not cost you a fortune. For example, individuals can simply practice and focus on their breathing. Procrastination can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life because procrastination is the thief of time. When you keep putting off things, they keep piling up and getting in your way of achieving other things. Then you have missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, feel stressed, guilt and resentment; you find you are being overwhelmed easily because there is just so much to do.
There are many different parts to time management, such as procrastination, strategy, organization, expectations and being prepared. All of them contribute equally in many ways. All of the things that we have spoken about in this paper are highly recommended. The best thing to do when it comes to time management is to set a strategy, become organized and do your best to avoid procrastination. When you manage your time make sure you include the following; studying, sleeping, eating, relaxing and other necessary things. No matter what our circumstances are, we can all use some time management skills in our lives.

PMBOK guide defines TM as the “Use of available time and your own productivity along with the appropriate planning and management of the project schedule” highlighting the link between Time Management and productivity and its closely knit relationship to scope and cost areas. Max Wideman presents a wider definition for TM as the “function required to maintain appropriate allocation of time to the overall conduct of the project through the successive stages of its natural life-cycle, by means of the processes of time planning, time estimating, time scheduling, and schedule control.” Ultimately at it’s core however, TM is about time, its planning and control during all stages of the project. A further look into Wideman’s definition of TM by means of identifying its importance throughout the entire project life-cycle (Initiation, planning, execution, controlling and close-out) is required. It is hoped that by analysing how TM tools and techniques can positively and negatively effect the different stages of the Project life cycle a better understanding of productivity, TM and project success will result.
