For a teacher to improve on their teaching ability they must be evaluated each year. This evaluation can show them what is wrong with their teaching methods and can show them what they are doing right. The teacher’s strategy of teaching and how enthusiastic they are about their subject should be at the top of the list when they are being evaluated. This should be followed by their ability to motivate their students, which would lead to the students gaining something from the class. The last thing should be whether or not the teacher shows some form of responsibility, meaning that the teacher is doing what they are supposed to be doing when around their students. According to Vesna Nikolic and Hanna Cabaj, authors of Am I Teaching Well?, “a motivated student [is] one who is willing to engage in all learning tasks; interested in all aspects of the subject matter; eager to cooperate with the teacher and classmates; ready to invest energy in the assigned tasks […]” (Nikolic 197-198). There are many students who are not willing to learn the subject being taught to them; however, if a teacher can motivate these students they can be more effective when teaching their classes. For example, some teachers who go above and beyond when teaching can get off topic many times. This can then result in the students learning about unrelated subjects. Another example is that teachers who are too enthusiastic about their subject can go too far in depth with the topic for the day and can confuse their students. Both of these teachers tend to fall behind on their lesson plans, but make many adjustments so that they can fit everything in before the end of the semester or year.
