Being an international student in the Master of Social Work program at MSU has been a positive transition in my life. I believe that this study abroad program to Mexico during 2014 spring break will help me to have a better understanding of Latino culture which will enhance my personal growth as well as furthering my professional goal of working with children of poverty as a social worker.
As a multi-cultural Japanese and Chinese individual and an international student at MSU, I have had many experiences that enhanced my personal cultural awareness. Michigan State University embraces students with different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. Here I am able to participate various events with people carrying different life stories. For example, I have worked as an intern with refugees in the Emergency Management Office of East Lansing via the MSU Global Internship Program. I volunteered in the Red Cedar International Elementary School for their “One world, many stories” program with families and children from more than 16 countries. I also conducted a survey titled “Family Resources for MSU international parents” supported by the MSU Family Resource Center. In addition, I advocated for international children living in Spartan Village so they could get a playroom. These experiences with a variety of cultures have made me a more caring and open person.
The competency to work with diverse population has been one of my professional strength, and it is my professional goal to serve different clients with my well developed skills and ethics, and contribute my part to social policies alongside my career. This scholarship will assist me in achieving my goals through supporting my trip expenses in Mexico. Essentially, it will allow me to receive an excellent education in an amazing country as well as apply this knowledge to help oppressed and traumatized children living in poverty. It is important to include cultural issues in the helping process to be more effective. We also need cultural competence because the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. Eurocentric values dominate sciences and began cultural universals which puts the clash of dominate and non-dominate cultural behaviors in motion. In 1996 the NASW Code of Ethics increased the recognition of cultural competence. It is important to know diversity exist within ethnic and cultural groups because social workers need to know that relationships between helping professionals and clients may be strained. This happens because of the distrust between groups. Another important aspect is that the professional realizes their own values, biases, and beliefs. The reason for this is because they must value diversity to start with and understand the dynamics of difference. Culturally competent practitioners have to go through developmental process of using their own culture as a starting point to meet all behaviors. Striving for cultural competence is a long term process of development. The literature on cultural competence is theoretical and conceptual. They have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Roughly there are 2 million Native americans in the U.S. Which survive decimating disease, over-repressed in child welfare system, suffer from health problems, and are among the poorest people in the United States. Working with them clearly falls within the social work clearly mandate to serve vulnerable and oppressed clients. In such a multicultural world, being knowledgeable and understanding of not only your cultural background, but that of others is essential. Building my awareness on cultures different from my own, and how it shapes an individual’s identity, will foster my personal and professional development. Subsequently, I conducted a cultural interview with an individual whose cultural background differed from my own. Several similarities and differences between our cultures were apparent in the interview, specifically in the areas of race, ethnicity, language, values, and worldview.

I have desired to be in the medical field since my freshman year of school. Like a classic stereotype I wanted to go into the medical field after watching too much television, in particular Grey’s Anatomy. It was not the drama or love affairs that drew me into the profession but the adrenaline on a surgery coming in. The skills which they possessed to save a person’s life, and the relief of the family when the doctor was able to tell them that their loved one was going to be alright. As students, education is essential when gaining knowledge in areas in which they are not familiar with. Although students are exposed to the core curriculums, they are lacking the ability to retain knowledge from the world around them. As an Asian American, I receive many questions that involve my cultural background and lifestyle. Even though Asian Americans are considered as the “minority,” I often find myself asking the same questions about other backgrounds. Being able to learn about world culture may bring more awareness to our actions, knowledge of our peers’ backgrounds, and an understanding of diversity around the world.
Being raised in a Christian household allowed me to appreciate the value of helping others in need, and I am honored to be selected to apply for this scholarship for my dedication in my studies. The LCC Academic Achievement Scholarship will help me achieve my goal of helping others as a Registered Nurse. Laredo as my hometown, I have seen a health need in the community, which is why I plan to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree at TAMIU and work at the local hospital. As I devote time and effort towards my education, I have gladly been able to maintain my 4.0 GPA and be admitted onto the LCC Dean’s List three times.
Cultural diversity has been a major issue of concern for several decades, and it has affected institutions of learning, where facilitators have to balance the family and school involvement in enhancing learning. Establishing a meaningful environment for students with diverse backgrounds enhances positive performance in their academic, personal, and professional objectives. A healthy relationship with family members involves identifying the needs of each family’s cultural stand; this is because a culture may play a major role in defining a family’s responsiveness to a school’s involvement. The globalization aspect has facilitated the creation of a multicultural society, and hence the need for an education system that addresses the need to foster a conducive environment for learning. It is imperative to define the essence of family involvement and collaboration in schools’ activities, especially where cultural diversity is concerned.

Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. This also supports children’s sense of belonging and, by extension, their mental health and wellbeing. This class is crucial in understanding and working well parents, staff, and children. An effective educator understands how students’ cultures affect their perceptions, self-esteem, values, classroom behavior, and learning. As director, I need to use that understanding to help my students and staff feel welcomed, affirmed, respected, and valued. Living in poverty my whole life with a single mom and twin brother and three younger siblings, constantly having to fight off situations that were trying to distract me from obtaining an education, being born three months premature and being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a physical disability which I am striving successively to overcome. This past March I had the privilege to volunteer at Children’s Hospital Cerebral Palsy Adult Transition Longitudinal Study (CPAT) and they said my results were the best they had seen so far out of all the other participants because I worked hard and took on activities that I was not supposed to be able to do and loved it. The Refugee Women's Alliance fosters a welcoming atmosphere for the students and parents who have only been in the United States for a short period of time. The students that I have worked with are comfortable around the staffs and the volunteer. I noticed that despite the language barriers, the students were not afraid to joke around with the staffs. The students also have a platform for expressing concerns, fears, and opinions. Positive relationships between the faculty and the students prevent students from feeling alienated or ignored. The inclusive environment let the students know they are valued and do belong to the community. In addition, the Refugee Women's Alliance also engages the receiving communities' members to build broader support for immigrants among the mainstream American society. The organization utilizes arts, cultural celebration, refugees and immigrants stories to raise awareness as well as allowing individuals to develop a deeper understanding of the context from which people with different identities and values are coming from. For their last project, students were asked to complete a podcast on the issues or topics they care about.
