Vanguard Case Analysis After reading through the Vanguard case, there were a few difficult forks in the road that Vanguard seems to be facing. The company’s future can be greatly affected by some of these difficult choices. Vanguard has to decide whether to change their investment offerings, further develop Internationally, or to simply advertise to increase their client base. Top managers at Vanguard have to step up to the plate and rollout detailed plans as to what path the company should take regarding some of these issues. Through our in-class discussions, the majority of the students argued on one major problem that Vanguard was facing.
Spokane Industries has contracted Franklin Electronics for an 18 month product development contract. Franklin Electronics is new to using project management methodologies and has not been exposed to earned value management methodologies. Even though Franklin and Spokane have worked together in the past, they have mainly used fixed-price contracts with little to no stipulations. For this project, Spokane Industries is requiring Franklin Electronics to use formalized project management methodologies, earned value cost schedules, and schedules for reports and meetings. Since Franklin Electronics had no experience with earned value management, the cost accounting group was trained in the methodology in order to bid for the project.
Computer based training is effective because it is easy to track, outreach is more efficient with just in time learning, and the content of the training is more consistent than with an instructor-led training (Pruesser,Lynn & Nordstrom, 2011). While Instructor-led training can be more natural for older employees that are not as familiar with technology, it is also easier for the employees that lack the self-motivation or control to ensure they complete the self-paced training. Applications engineering, product engineering and manufacturing are all inclined towards achieving their individual objectives and timelines rather than collaborating and synergizing their efforts in order to attain a common goal of effective production with improved cost reduction. Few of the primary reasons are insufficient and unorganized company policies for coordination and cooperation, poor networking with in the organization especially on management level, lack of communication and influence among managers and VPs, insufficient human resource, and measuring a department's effectiveness solely on its performance based on individual objectives, rather than checking its effects on over all company's performance.

The investment in training has much more to do with the company other than low errors, reduced customer wait times, which lead to high customer satisfaction. The focus on training reduces employee turnover. The costs of hiring and training new employees greatly reduces customer loyalty, both significantly will impact profit. The challenge, comprehend the training requirements, formulating who will train and how the process will be trained. The repeated success of a training program must be quantifiable and re enforced. An efficacious training program with continual re enforcement will pay strong dividends in business profit, employee satisfaction and customer loyalty.
