Selina Raymond Mrs. Hildebrand English 102 18 April 2018 Literary Analysis of Savior Machine Many people do not realize how similar poetry and music are. Both poetry and music are commonly known as an outlet for artists to express their emotions. Some similarities they both have are rhythm, expression, and emotion. Those three components make it easy for the readers to understand what message the artist is trying to portray. A poet Tracy K. Smith uses many emotions throughout her poems that readers can easily understand. In the article “U.S. Poet Laureate visits Southeastern” claims, “Smith was appointed the U.S. Poet Laureate in 2017 by the Library of Congress” (Rhodes). They believe they will not feel this pain and grief forever that it is only temporary. The savior machine is a guide that will help them down the road to recovery. In the poem “Savior Machine” Smith says, “But mostly what I see/Is a human hand reaching down to life/A pebble from my tongue.” (lines 23-25). She is describing how the therapist has helped her overcome all her hardships that she was faced with. At the beginning of the poem she could not look at her therapist in their eyes she had to talk to her pillow. She was so uncomfortable speaking about her troubles. In the end, she also describes how her therapist helped her open up and become more comfortable speaking to them. In the David Bowie's song he says, “They called it the prayer, its answer was law/Its logic stopped war, gave them” (lines 4-5). As I have mentioned before Bowie is describing the machine helping the people out by ending the war and providing them with food. They have hope that this machine will provide them with protection and keep them safe. That the hard times they have just endured will never be experienced again. As a result, since they both have hope for recovery and a better life they resemble one
