Cousin Kate is a poem about a young woman who is seduced by a Lord. He soon ensnares her and marries her cousin Kate instead, leaving behind a broken-hearted cottage maiden. The maiden is soon classed as a fallen woman and is treated like an outcast in society. She is bitter and jealous of her cousin but soon reveals that she has the one thing her cousin does not and desperately wants: a son and replacement to the Lord.
The poem begins by saying ‘I was a cottage maiden’. It is a simple beginning, talking in the past tense. She tells us she is lower class person.
It later says she is ‘Hardened by sun and air’ this shows that the cottage maiden is strong and worked outside on land and it also suggests by the use of the words “contented with my cottage mates” that she was happy and a sense of community .
Then it says ‘why did a great lord find me out,’ this tells us that the lord has been chasing after her and she has been caught by him.
In this stanza there is a question asked to the question reveals that the girl is puzzled about the lord is after her. This suggests that she is aware that he has different motives rather than love and romance. This also shows that she knows the compliment is false and just a way of seducing her into bed.
The second stanza is where the great lord isn’t so “great” anymore. He lured and tricked her into going to his palace home. She then saw another life. Life without working and cleaning; however, the lord doesn’t take her seriously. He doesn’t feel like he has too as they are not married. “He wore me like a silken knot” is a simile which defines how he used her in his own way. ...fair haired son, my shame, my pride” We are told she has a son, and that not only is it a memory of her shame but he is her pride. He’s all she has. Then the last three lines on stanza six are switched. The narrator is now talking to her son, her pride. “Your father would give lands for one” she is telling her son that if his father really wanted to, he would take him and would leave her (the narrator) with nothing.
In conclusion, “Cousin Kate” is an extremely complicated poem, and even though there’s hate and heartbreak throughout, she ends up with pride. The narrator let the lord control her, power over her and make her what he wanted; however, Cousin Kate didn’t. She would only let him have sex with her if she could still be pure; this means that she would have to be married to do so. This probably made the lord have massive respect for Kate and not the narrator.
When the sixth stanza states that “She owns them, no one will admit what they cannot/ come close to must own them.” (24-25); it’s talking about the lady being an inexplicable legend. She captures the mind of the average person. She enthralls these people so much that they pursuit her every move, to understand her. She lets them come with her, on her journey. The first stanza describes the depth of despair that the speaker is feeling, without further explanation on its causes. The short length of the lines add a sense of incompleteness and hesitance the speaker feels towards his/ her emotions. This is successful in sparking the interest of the readers, as it makes the readers wonder about the events that lead to these emotions. The second and third stanza describe the agony the speaker is in, and the long lines work to add a sense of longing and the outpouring emotion the speaker is struggling with. The last stanza, again structured with short lines, finally reveals the speaker 's innermost desire to "make love" to the person the speaker is in love
In the last stanza, the child’s fate fades away as she happens to be one of the victims of the church bombing. Randall chose to leave the reader, with the thoughts of the mother. The last few lines of the last stanza read:
..., but still pleads for God to "take me in" (ll. 41), and promises to "pay...in happiness" for mercy. Once again, the speaker demonstrates the same desires for physical treasures that he expresses in the first stanza as he asks God to "give mine eye / A peephole there to see bright glory's chases" (ll. 39-40). Even in the God's kingdom, the speaker reveals his humanity as he focuses on ornamentation which starkly contrasts with God's divinity as He has the ability to show love even for sinners.
The poem starts with the line, “This girlchild was born as usual,” which suggests that as soon as a girl is born, society already expects her to learn the role she will soon play in when she hits puberty (1). Thus, showing why we are given dolls as little girls to illustrate how we should act and appear according to society. After we learn all the roles we will soon take part in, “the magic of puberty,” hits and girls immediately begin applying the ideals to their own lives (5). As if this attempt to conform is not enough we have other people telling us we are not to perfect. “You have a great big nose and fat legs,” says a classmate to the girl (6). This type of pressure can slowly but surely destroy even the little confidence women do have in themselves.
This stanza begins the encounter. It sets the scene saying it is a lazy street. He begins to describe the woman's beauty, pointing out her hazel eyes and tiny feet.
The daughter alludes to an idea that her mother was also judged harshly and made to feel ashamed. By the daughters ability to see through her mothers flaws and recognize that she was as wounded as the child was, there is sense of freedom for both when the daughter find her true self. Line such as “your nightmare of weakness,” and I learned from you to define myself through your denials,” present the idea that the mother was never able to defeat those that held her captive or she denied her chance to break free. The daughter moments of personal epiphany is a victory with the mother because it breaks a chain of self-loathing or hatred. There is pride and love for the women they truly were and is to be celebrated for mother and daughter.
...the last line of this stanza, the man's voice is compared to "terrible silver hands". Terrible, a strong emotion, shows the girl's fear towards the man's ruthless voice. Silver, as a kind of metal, is attractive, valuable but cold. The man is attractive to the girl, the girl loves him. Nevertheless, the man's attitude towards the girl is cold and in different. That's why the man's voice here will be compared to "silver hand". Above all, the man's attitude is cold, tepid and certain towards this relationship.
She is saying that whatever is about to come is already hopeless. It’s almost like she’s giving up before it even begins. She is comparing this third event to the other two events that have happened in her life. She claims to be immortal, however she mentions heaven and hell in the second stanza saying “Parting is all we know of heaven, And all we need of hell.” Immortal means that you don’t believe in heaven or hell so she is somewhat contradicting herself here. She’s comparing heaven and hell to her life on earth stating that parting ways is really all she knows. Due to her not knowing of anything or anybody that has stuck along for a long enough in her life without disappointing her, she is saying that the heartbreak she is experiencing is the worst that it can get for her and she doesn’t need to experience anything worse in hell. On line 16 Bishop uses a long hyphen sara to pause before she breaks down and says “¬¬–̶ Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture/”. She is remembering the qualities of the lover she lost. On line 17 when Bishop uses the present tense words “I love…” as if admitting that she still loves the person she lost. Then again as followed on line 17 “…I shan’t have lied. It’s evident”. She admits that she lied in her poem. As mentioned before the thesis repeats in line 18 of the last quatrain stanza but this time uses an extra word, “too”. The word “too” actually means that losing is “not so easy” as she had believed it was at the beginning of the poem. The use of enjambment throughout the poem goes beyond the literal meaning. Bishop’s use of enjambment within the lines interpret that when one loses someone it is not the end of that pain but rather that the pain will always be present and what matters is how one person copes with that pain and accepts the fact that one will always lose. There is much resistance in Bishop’s words from the beginning of the poem when she uses the word “master” as if having control and then switches to the opposing word “disaster” as if out of control. The use of Bishops words at the beginning of the poem refers to her earlier years when she lost her father when she was eight months old which was not so hard
