The education required of an animator is 4 years of college, though you might be able to slip by with 2. This is very unlikely though. The best degree titles would be in animation and visual effects, though there are probably others that would suffice as well. As far as training goes, an aspiring animator should know how to use and be familiar with all kinds of software. Some examples include Adobe Photoshop, JavaScript, and MAYA to name a few. Colleges with a reputation for art would be an obvious choice, and would provide the best environment for someone who is looking to be in the field. On average, an animator will work 40 hours a week from Monday to Friday. This may not apply when deadlines for a project approach, when hours may increase drastically. Also, as one moves up in the industry, hours have the potential to increase. Some challenges that may occur in animation would be having the patience to draw every individual panel. Advertisers also employ animation to develop commercials for television. In addition, producers of instructional films may use animation to help explain a difficult idea or one that could not be shown in live action. Animation can also be combined with live action in a movie. Many animators continue to make many drawings by hand. Since the mid-1980's, however, computer assistance combined with hand-drawn animation has become standard in many movie studios. These methods created such feature-length animated films as The Lion King (1994) and The Prince of Egypt (1998).
