The Defining Theme of Our Age How do you think history will record the 21st century? What do you think the theme of 21st century will be? “Throughout human history, different periods have been captured by a defining theme: the Dark Ages… the Industrial Age… the Nuclear Age… the Information Age… the Space Age, etc. One may feel it is too early to determine the theme of what is still a new century [but there are many] possibilities: The age of connections? The iPod transform the way people listened to music. It was a small portable music player that was able to hold over one thousand songs without the need to carry CD’s or cassette tapes. It was a big deal for music lovers because it was like saying that they were carrying one thousand songs in their packets. Today, in the year of 2015, I dare to say that iPod’s are in the past. The new technology in touch screen cell phones like Samsung Galaxy S6 and IPhone 6S are more capable of doing much more than just simply texting or calling. As the years past, cell phones are now use to listen to music, take pictures, videos, browse the internet, video calling, mobile payments, and many more features. Technology is changing the way we communicate. One noticeable tool for communication are social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They contain free video chat, messages, and online calls. It keeps people connected with their friends and family members all around world. Technology is obviously having an impact on our personal lives. However, the technology that will impact the future is energy. One common invention is electric cars. These automobiles use electrical energy, instead of fuel, that is stored in rechargeable batteries creating a smooth acceleration. It is believe that it will reduce air pollution by 33%. For example: Italy experience several terrorist attacks on December 12, of 1969. Russia and U.S. were testing nuclear weapon during war world II. On June of 979, there was an oil spill of 140 millions of gallon in the Gulf of Campeche, Mexico. So, why our century will be called as the Age of Shame? Well, maybe history decided to start choosing the themes of the century as they are. Or because this are not the only shameful events that are happening so far in this century. Economics is altering the world to a linear system. Where companies are cutting more trees than before, to produce more products, for people to buy more stuffs than before, that produces to more waste products than before, that are causing contaminating and destroying our natural resources in a faster pace than before. All of this just for money. One person once said “when the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, we will realize that we cannot eat money” furthermore, our generation is more violence. The music of today, it is all about how to disrespect the woman, sex, money, drugs and violence. Therefore, Young girls are getting abuse in parties. Young people are going to their schools to kills their classmates. Fathers are killing theirs sons. Sons are killing their parents. Authorities using their power to kill innocent people.
