Cell phones have made a big impact on the world, for example, people are using them daily, and they have influenced science, politics, and many more fields. When cell phones were first introduced, all you could do was call others and talk for half an hour. It was like a brick and took ten hours to charge. It also cost $3995. That’s a lot more than most of today’s cell phones. Even, though it was a very basic phone, it began impacting the world. Now, you could call your relatives and actually talk with them without being next to them. Parents gave their kids cell phones to stay in touch. Now you can contact anyone through your mobile phone in multiple ways. You can text, call, facetime or message someone through social media. Cell phones abilities …show more content…
improve every time a new one is released. In 1997 two phones were released, one from Motorola and the other from Nokia. With the Nokia you could play games, check the time and use a calculator. In 1999 the Blackberry was released. It had a better keypad for texting. In 2004 the Motorola Razr V3 was released. This was a very popular fashion phone.
In 2005 the first Black Berry with WiFi was released. One of the first smart phones was the Nokia N95. It had WiFi, a touchscreen and some apps. Then in 2008 the iPhone 3G was released. You could get apps, use a calculator, check calendar, take pictures, call, text, take notes and so much more. Now our phones are very light, and we can do many things with them. You can listen to music or podcast, use social media or play games. Cell phones have also changed our language. Thanks to texting, there are many abbreviations that exist. At first, you could only type 160 characters per text. This caused people to start using abbreviations to use less characters. They also began skipping punctuation. This method became very popular and is commonly used today. The 160 character limit does not exist anymore, but text speak is still very popular. Emojis have also become very popular. Emojis began in 1999 in Japan. To save character limits, they began sending pictures. They only used one character which saved a lot of space. Now, emojis are a new way of communication. Some people only chat through emojis. Some people believe that this could be a new language in the future. Another way cell phones changed the world was that they were
like miniature computers. You can do many things with it, just like a computer. You can now search up images, questions, check your e-mail, and check the news. You can also get many apps that a computer can get. You can listen to music, check Facebook, and watch Netflix or another streaming service. They are also much more portable than a laptop. They can also do multiple things that computers can’t. Another way phones have impacted the world is through social movements. Many people hashtag their movement and post it to support it. This has happened multiple times. One example is #ILookLikeAnEngineer. This movement began to break the stereotype of how engineers should look like. This was used by both women and men. Another popular one is #BringBackOurGirls. This started when Nigerian militants kidnapped around 300 schoolgirls. The girls range from ages 15 to 18. They are being auctioned off and sold to be wives. Thankfully 50 girls managed to escape but there are still 276 girls who are still kidnapped. The Nigerian government has done nothing to help them. The girls who have escaped and their families are hoping for the U.S. and the United Nations to help them. #BringBackOurGirls was created to pressure the U.S. into helping them get the girls back. Another very popular movement is the #ALSIceBucketChallenge. This is to help raise money for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. To participate in this challenge, you need to record yourself dumping a bucket of ice water on yourself. You can also nominate other people for this challenge. After you upload it, you donate to ALS. This challenge happens during the summer and is very popular. Multiple celebrities have done it and donated like Chris Pratt, Chris Colfer, and even Kim Kardashian. Phones have also impacted politics. Now politicians campaign through social media to get support from people. For example, you can show your support for a certain politician by retweeting them, posting about them or commenting on their photos. Politicians can also do live streams through Facebook or Twitter to answer questions. This can give them even more support. Even if you are not a fan of politics, your friends might be. Things that they like, comment or repost could end up on your feed and inform you. Though politics on social media do allow politicians to get more support, it can also bring negative impacts for those politicians. For example, many accounts are created to put them down with hate. They spread hateful posts or comments on that politician. This device affected the world in many ways. One way it affected people was by time management. Many people wasted time at the bank or at the store waiting in line. Now with today’s smartphones, they can shop or manage their money with a click of a button. This has allowed more time to relax or work. This affects people in developing countries. In these countries, banks can be far away from where you live. Phones that help manage money are very useful. You can just check your app or website instead of walking miles away to bank. Many people in developing countries do not have bank accounts. With the help of cell phones, they can open an account and begin learning to managing their money. It also helped developing countries by helping them get medical attention. Some workers contact medical specialists through texts for help. SMS For Life is another program that uses texts. They help give out malaria medicine. With texts they check stock levels or important information. Phones have also helped developing countries by helping them find jobs. Many apps help find jobs or ways to earn money. This helps them by earning money with things that they can do. This can also help become more developed. Cell phones have also helped farmers. Using phones they can decide what types of crops to plant that year or to prepare for bad weather or epidemics. This allows them to have more time to prepare and plan ahead of time. Unfortunately, since using phones can help you reduce time spent on shopping or banking, many people use phones for playing games or distracting themselves. This can take up too much time and lead to addiction. This can cause you to focus more on your phone that what you should be doing, like homework or work. In a recent study by Common Sense Media, 50% of teenagers admitted that they are addicted to their phones. In that survey, 59% of parents felt that their teenagers are addicted to their phones. They also discovered that 80% of teenagers check their phones every hour. A custodian at a high school said that the high school is filled with teen zombies stuck to their phones. In the same study they found that 28% of teenagers believe that their parents are addicted to their phones. To help the addiction to phones, it is recommended to limit yourself. Although phones can cause distractions, they can help you in homework. Many apps exist that help you study for tests, practice math or even learn a new language. There are even virtual dissections! One popular language app is Duolingo. Many people have learned English, Spanish, Italian and more with it. There are also many test prep apps that help you prepare. Some have reminders to make sure that you are practicing every day. Another popular app type are tutoring apps. You can take a picture of a problem or type it out and ask for help. Tutors can help you solve the problem through your phone. Phones can be very helpful, but they can also be pretty harmful. Recently more and more accidents have happened involving phones. For example, car accidents have been more common since texting became popular. One in four car accidents are caused by irresponsible cell phone usage. Only 5% of cell phone car accidents are cause by texting. Most cars now have a Bluetooth that connects to phones. All you need to do is connect your phone and click a button on the steering wheel to answer or hang up a call. While this can help take your eyes off your phone, it can still be pretty distracting. If you are using your phone while driving you can get a fine. These tiny pieces of technology also have helped economic growth, mostly in developing countries. Since cell phones open new opportunities, there has been more income and productivity. One company studied the effects of going from 2G to 3G on 96 markets. When the market got a 10% shift, GDP per capita grew by about .5 points. Increasing mobile data leads to a bigger average per capita income. Cell phones have had both a positive and negative effect over people around the world. Mobile phones have influenced many other pieces of technology. When mobile phones first began, the two most popular ones where from Nokia and Motorola. Nowadays the competition is mostly between Apple and Samsung. Both companies are constantly trying to be better than the other. Cell phones have also inspired improvements of other tech. For example most technology is now thinner and more like phones than before. For example tablets now have the ability to do things like phones with apps. Many apps exist where you can text or call if you are not on your phone. Tablets and laptops can call or text with recent new apps. TV’s now get apps like Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and Spotify. Most technology is also getting thinner. TV’s, for example, are now thin enough to put on your wall. Laptops are also getting thinner and less heavy. This makes them more portable. Thanks to phones, our technology is becoming more and more advanced and take up less space. Technology has impacted the post-World War II world in many ways. NATO’s science and technology department helps NATO allies have an advantage in technology. They try to level technology to be fair and also help security and defense technology. Technology has greatly globalized our world. We can now look at the news, search things we want to find and learn new things. You can communicate with friends and family by calling or texting them. In addition, cell phones enable us to interact with people we wouldn’t normally encounter. This not only permits us to learn from one other and the world around us, but we can help in times of need. In fact, during Hurricane Sandy our cell phones played an important role. In 2012 someone had the idea to create a Facebook page that bridged the gap between victims and good Samaritans
