John McNeill, in his informative book, Something New Under the Sun, he discusses how the twentieth century brought the world into a steady decline. Although the world has improved technology-wise, it has also had a decline that overshadows the improvement we have seen. McNeil goes on to prove that it is humans, with our new technology are the reason behind this fateful decline. The world’s population has positively and negatively affected the twentieth century world by bringing “ecological changes” that will forever change the world(4). In his book, McNeill chapter by chapter, explains that the people living in the world are positively affecting the world in an abundance of ways. Firstly, the fact that the worlds population has almost quadrupled within the last one hundred years proves that the world can quickly be manipulated, and made better (271). With hundreds of millions of people all living in unison the world will most definitely be impacted. An invention that helped jumpstart the industrial revolution, and helped better the world is the invention of the Model T automobile. The Model T brought many jobs to the United States in the middle of an economic crisis. First, people were needed to assemble the automobiles, but also, people were needed to pave roads for the automobiles to drive on. This was all apart of F. D. Roosevelt’s New Deal (311). The automobile was not only beneficial to the life of millions, it also brought the use of many new inventions; such as, the assembly line and removable parts. The invention of these parts has since continued to benefit the world. Companies are able to produce machines in a quicker and convenient manner, which thus creates a larger profit for them. With the invention of vaccine... ... middle of paper ... ... how they greatly effected our world today. This book made me realize the many things I take for granted. Never in my lifetime have I had to worry about breathing in polluted air, or drinking unsanitary water. I never put much thought into how destructive this once was and still is in some parts of the world. McNeil, through his informative and descriptive book most definitely changed my view on the twentieth century. He helped me see the importance of little things, and see their impact on the world years later. Although the world as a whole has become greater and greater as each decade passes, the world has experienced a decline that overpowers the good that has happened in this century. Technology wise, the world has used this to our advantage, and become a greater and smarter world each day. However, the technology is a main reason for the world’s downfall.
Technology has been around as long as people have and has been advancing ever since. It is the reason that we have access to the miraculous tools that we do today. From the forks that we eat our supper with to the cars that get us from place to place technology is everywhere. However, with technology advancing at such a rapid pace, it could pose a threat to our future society. In the short stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet, the authors describe how bleak society could become if we do not take precautions when using technology.
The first reason that the Model T improved peoples lives was by families being more united. For example, in a history book it says, "On Sundays many families hopped into their cars for short day trips." ( Nash, 380) This quote demonstrates the families being united because they would go for trips together. This was different than before because before families would not visit each other as often because they needed a car so they rode in trains and other transportation they had. Another example is from a website that says, " It became an integrated of life. Parents could drive to work. Families could visit friends and family who lived far away in their Model T." (http://www.angelfire.com/pscst/html) This quote shows that families could drive far to friends and families house which really changed their lives. Before they could live far so people would usually live close, but the Model T changed that. The last quote is from a website that states, "I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for." (www.modelt.org,1)
In the book “Collapse” written and theorized by Jared Diamond, historical societies known for their peril due to environmental and human catastrophes. Jared Diamond analyzes the root causes of failed societies and uses his knowledge to depict today’s warning signs. The main focus of this book is to present clear and undeniable evidence that human activities corrupted the environment. To prove this Diamon used past societies, modern societies, and social business societies as a foundation. The most specific and beneficial theories that Diamond analyzes would be the decline of biodiversity on Easter Island, the deforestation of the Greenland Norse, the mining mismanagements in Australia and big businesses.
Something New Under the Sun, is forthright on the environmental history of the twentieth century. John R. McNeill makes the claim that the human footprint on Earth during the twentieth century is unheard of and hidden from history. It is made clear that in the midst of this time, the human changes on the planet was at its most critical stage. McNeill expresses that humans were very adaptable before, but have become accustomed to a limited supply of cheap resources, which include, power and water. Now humans are unable to conform to scarce conditions. McNeill provides a wide range of valuable information that is up-to-date and restrains from mitigating environmental issues. The book is divided into 12 chapters, each with an introductory paragraph and a concise overview of the proposed topic. The content of the book includes an examination of the Earth’s lithosphere, pedosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. McNeill pleasantly displays the historic account
Have you ever had the thought that technology is becoming so advanced that someday we might not be able to think for ourselves? There is no questioning the fact that we live in a society that is raging for the newest technology trends. We live in a society that craves technology so much that whenever a new piece of technology comes out, people go crazy to get their hands on it. The stories that will be analyzed are The Time Machine by H.G Wells and The Veldt by Ray Bradbury. These stories offer great insight into technologies’ advancements over time that will ultimately lead to the downfall of human beings. These two stories use a different interpretation of what will happen when technology advances, but when summed up a common theme appears. In the story, The Time
Fewer people are becoming increasingly 'successful' and wealthy while a disproportionately larger population are also becoming even poorer. The developed nations, by systematic spoliation of the non-renewable resources of the world, are also destroying the ecosystem. Around the world, inequality is increasing, while the rest of the world is further globalising. In many cases, political interests have led to a diversion of available resources from domestic needs to western markets. Historically, politics and power play by the elite leaders and rulers has meant that people and their land can be controlled, which has further increased poverty and dependency.
I agree with Ray Bradbury, humanity is doomed. Technology has created so many problems, so rapidly, that humans cannot respond to the changes. Technology has become a tool that makes our lives easier, but the negative effects are far too overpowering, making it almost impossible to stop it before it is too late. Examples from “The Veldt,” and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” show the potential dangers that technology could bring. It may seem unbelievable, but just as George Hadley said, “This is a little too real, but I don’t see anything wrong,” (Bradbury 1). Humans cannot see the problem, only past it. Global warming, antibiotic overuse, overpopulation, and modern warfare, are just a few of the threats technology bestows upon us.
It seems since that dawn of the era of man we have always been in competition with one another. We have fought countless wars over every issue imaginable, with many great civilizations being founded and destroyed by war. Though with each new conflict comes newer and better technology. Technology is what drives civilizations forward, but it can also lead to its downfall. It is fascinating see how much technology has evolved over history, and how we have incorporated these innovations into newer technology. In past century technology has seen its greatest leap forward. This is in large part due to the two major World Wars that plagued the early part of the 20th century. (Koch p.122)
In this year Henry Ford created the first affordable, combustion engine car called the Model-T. The creation of the Model-T changed the lives of every American. Vehicles were looked at as a way of freedom and excitement. Soon after, every household in America had a car. The demand for vehicles sparked a whole new industry, creating jobs, more revenues and improving the American economy in every way. With so many vehicles on the roads, roads needed to become bigger and better which spawned a nation wide road construction. This also created more jobs and strengthened the economy even further. It's hard to assign an irrefutable definition to the world nowadays - given its remarkably unfathomable state. The American Dream, the information revolution, two world wars, pornography, third world countries' independence and other benchmarks define the timeline of the 20th century (the near past). However, where has this left us today? Indeed the world exhibits an extremely ambiguous era that may be a prelude to a wholly different future than its past – far or near. Most significant in our present is the emergence of exponentially growing technology with unlimited abilities – simultaneously promising and foreboding - which has created a gap between the agenda of the minority that holds such technological powers and the majority's ordinary activity; it accounted for a circumference of negligence of the present's underlying powers and the future's potential ones.
One of the major effects of the huge population increase has been the depletion of natural resources and the destruction of ecosystems. In the 1960's, theorist Paul Ehrlich predicted that, given the skyrocketing figures of human population, the amount of food produced would not grow at a fast enough rate for human survival (Professor Carr Everbach, personal communication). He predicted mass starvation and death by the year 2000 as the result of uncontrolled population growth. Clearly, this did not occur. Ehrlich did not foresee the advancements ma...
Can you imagine your life without technology? Many people believe that the technology currently saves a lot of time. And some people think that technology makes human life is full of hardships. It is clear that technology takes part everywhere in the world. Take a moment to think about the whereabouts of technology, then you will see that it is everywhere. At home, one certainly will find electricity, refrigerators, air conditioners, and many other devices. And if you take a look at life outside the home, the transportation of most of its types are considered part of technology such as cars, pilots and other transportations that go with the meaning of technology. Human life in the current era is dependent on technology, people will find great difficulty in life that if taken away from technology. Although many people believe that technology enslaves people, It is obvious that technology saves
Albert Einstein once said, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” Technology is a controversial topic, some say we are depending in excess from gadgets and devices. However, if it wasn’t for technology we wouldn’t be able to experience many benefits.
In the 21st century, we live in the era of technology-driven world. Humans never stopped the development of technology, because we always have a natural tendency to pursue a higher level of human being. Technology is the best evidence of human intelligence, which has shown that we are different from other animals. We have lived with technology since we were born. Although it has intervened heavily in our daily lives that we can’t no longer live without, nobody can deny the achievements it has brought to us.
The reduction of the Earth's resources has been closely linked to the rise in human population. For many thousands of years people lived in relative harmony with their surroundings. Population sizes were small, and life-supporting tools were simple. Most of the energy needed for work was provided by the worker and animals. Since about 1650, however, the human population has increased dramatically. The problems of overcrowding multiply as an ever-increasing number of people are added to the world's population each year.
