Cosmetology is a profession with a long history that requires intense schooling, implements a variety of techniques, practical knowledge and a high degree of that blend of communication and psychology which most people refer to as "people skills.". The word “Cosmetology” comes from the Greek civilization, some of the very first evidence of makeup was found in Mesopotamia, people figured this out by finding their carvings and portraits. In a cosmetology school, students learn lots of skills and techniques that are needed to pass their exam. Cosmetology exams include things such as hair, nails, makeup, and safety and sanitation. Becoming a cosmetologist doesn’t take much at all, every state requires cosmetologists to be licensed. To get a cosmetology license you need to have at least a high school diploma, and you would have to graduate from a state-licensed cosmetology school. To get into a cosmetology school, you would only have to be 16 years old. Cosmetology school is nothing like normal school. In cosmetology school there aren’t really any books or writing and you don’t learn anything but how to do hair, makeup, and how to do things with the skin, you just practice the basic beauty skills which is something that a lot of people like to do. For me, it was getting into Mr. John’s through the technical academy my junior year of high school. In case you don’t know, the tech academy allows you to leave school after fourth period and go to a college credited class, such as engineering, firefighting, and, of course, cosmetology. My freshman year, I made a plan for myself to be in tech my junior and senior year and then continue to Paul Mitchell to further my career goals. It all began my freshman year of high school when I was told about elective classes that would help me decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I chose cosmetology as my program of study because it is about doing hair and makeup and it is all about beauty and I like to make people feel good about themselves when I do their makeup and feel pretty, and I love to do makeup and hair. Cosmetology is the study of beauty treatment, including hairstyling, skincare, cosmetics, pedicures, manicures, non permanent hair removal such as waxing and sugaring. Cosmetology can be defined “as the professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, hair, and skin.” As you can usually hear, cosmetology covers more than just hair. As a cosmetologist you are also well trained in, skincare, nails, and makeup.
There are many different types of careers in the cosmetology field. The different types are; hairstylist, perm or hair color specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber, or esthetician. Anyone can major in one of these careers, multiple ones, or all of them. It doesn't matter how many they major in, they will still be considered a cosmetologist. To get a major in cosmetology, it is required to take a class in the career you are interested in. A typical cosmetology training program typically lasts nine months to about a year. Students are instructed on hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair color, manicures and pedicures, chemical texture services, acrylic nail application, massages, facials, and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to expand their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies on scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, main principles of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and safe work practice. Once the course is finished, including service hours, the person then has to take and pass a state exam on the course. Once the exam is passed, the person then receives their certificate.
Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

When I was in sixth grade, I remember in my computer class we had to research what we wanted to do after we graduated. I’ll be honest, I thought that I wanted to be a fashion designer, a designer!
