It all began my freshman year of high school when I was told about elective classes that would help me decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always had a passion for doing hair, make-up, and nails so that was easy for me to choose an elective. My freshman and sophomore year I decided I would take cosmetology classes. I would spend two hours each day of school in the cosmetology lab, which was always cold and smelled like hairspray, burnt hair from the straighteners or a strong acetone smell that someone gets a whiff of at a nail salon. We learned so much material and I had a good time practicing my skills on manikins and other classmates. I was super excited but also nervous because I had no idea what I was getting myself into. My first thoughts were, “wow these are all freshman, why does this classroom smell like lavender and what is that annoying squeaky smell?” The lavender smell was a burning candle and that annoying squeaky sound was a super old heater in the back of the classroom. I sat next to a new girl named Jennifer, she just so happened to be in the same grade as me so I wasn’t alone. Jennifer always smelled like different perfumes from bath and body works. As weeks, months, and a year went by it was my senior year and I had grown so close to Jennifer and my teacher, Mrs. Huff. I realized how much I loved that class and how happy I was that God had led me down that path! I was filled with so much joy entering Mrs. Huff’s class my first day of my senior year because I was beginning my clinicals. Once I started visiting the hospital, Tennova, participating in and watching procedures I realized nursing is exactly what I wanted to do! The best surgery I got to witness was a baby being born; it wasn’t a pleasant sight, looked very painful and the smell of blood was so strong I felt like I could taste it, yuck! Cosmetology was created to help those that are in need of their desired look. To express every moment was second of who they are or will become to be. Even though, we have abundant stylist today throughout the country. This career may not be the most satisfying, fun, or even a high-ranking in income, but the satisfaction of each smile is more than enough. You will get paid based on how big and well your company is. If your company is big then you will earn about 12.72 an hour and that is 26,460 dollars a year or more but if you are the lower working or not as big 10 percent then you will earn about 16,710 or less a year. There is an average 300,000 people employed a year for cosmetology.

There are many different types of careers in the cosmetology field. The different types are; hairstylist, perm or hair color specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber, or esthetician. To get a major in cosmetology, it is required to take a class in the career you are interested in. A typical cosmetology training program typically lasts nine months to about a year. Students are instructed on hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair color, manicures and pedicures, chemical texture services, acrylic nail application, massages, facials, and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to expand their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies on scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, main principles of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and safe work practice. Once the course is finished, including service hours, the person then has to take and pass a state exam on the course. Once the exam is passed, the person then receives their certificate.
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
After high school I would like to major in Cosmetology. It is very appealing to me when I am getting my nails done. Another part of Cosmetology I dream to become is, cutting and styling hair. I have watched my mom get her hair cut and have also watched my grandma cut my own hair as well. I have practiced while cutting my mom's hair and also gave my sisters bangs. I want to love what I do and I have a strong interest in this career.

I was then introduced to a patient who was in isolation. Her legs were immovable and were crossed in a very uncomfortable position. I wish I could’ve done something so that her legs could be in a more comfortable position, but all I could do was observe and get her a cup of ice cold water to drink. During this clinical observation, I didn’t get to see much but overall, it was a good experience. It made me realize what it was like to be in a hospital setting and what it meant to be a nurse. Seeing how the patients were still able to smile through all the pain they went through, it made me want to become a nurse even more because I would also like to make my patients happy. If I could do one thing differently during this clinical observation, I wish I didn’t ask my senior nurse about what externships she took and instead, I wished I asked her more questions about the patients in order to gain more information about
The practice of improving the beauty of others may seem insignificant to some but for those in process of studying the cosmetology industry take great pride in the work they hope to produce. Hair stylist and nail technicians improve the way people look and feel about oneself to better improve self confidence; cosmetologist strive to do the best they can to achieve the look that their client may be searching for. However, these techniques must be taught thoroughly and without the proper teaching techniques, the upcoming cosmetologist may feel behind and uncertain about their abilities when performing on clients. Without the proper and professional ways of teaching, the student struggle to ever gain success in the business; this business builds only from the repetition of great work and failing to achieve the overall style of the desired look from the client will result in a failing business. I was never one of those who as a young girl wanted to become a nurse, I knew I always wanted to work in health care administration. I will say my journey to become a nurse started after facing some challenging health and personal experience. I lost my father suddenly to heart disease at age 15. My father was my bedrock who at that time always wanted me to become a nurse, but as a teenager I wanted to do my own thing. Not until I experienced a series of hospitalization. One that stood out for me was when I was in the hospital for two weeks getting exchange transfusions, and I almost died. The nurses were incredible. They were angels at my bedside. They encouraged me, worked me through my treatment plan, and explained every detail to me. The nurses were the parents I did not have at my bedside for 24 hours. After discharge, I started to think about a career in nursing. Not too long after this occurrence, I started taking my prerequisites while I volunteered at Bellevue Hospital. After a long journey, I finally became a registered nurse.
It was the happiest feeling that I have ever felt in my life, and as time came near for me to have my son the feeling became greater and greater. When I heard one of the nurses saying “Were ready, she’s now nine centimeters”, I began to get very anxious and excited at the same time. Although I was beginning to get happy I was still in disbelief as all of it was happening. I see the nurses preparing themselves. I just said to myself, “oh yeah its happening alright”. I was about to become a mother which was so unreal to me and nerve racking because I had no idea how to love or be mother. My heart became full of so many emotions, however the thought that dominated my mind was that I had to be the best mother I can be so my son could grow up and be the man he was destined to
This week’s clinical experience has been unlike any other. I went onto the unit knowing that I needed to be more independent and found myself to be both scared and intimidated. However, having the patients I did made my first mother baby clinical an exciting experience. I was able to create connections between what I saw on the unit and the theory we learned in lectures. In addition, I was able to see tricks other nurses on the unit have when providing care, and where others went wrong. Being aware of this enabled me to see the areas of mother baby nursing I understood and areas I need to further research to become a better nurse.
