When its time for a trim, a new style, cut, color, manicure, or makeover, almost everyone goes to their local salon to see a cosmetologist. What is a cosmetologist? A person licensed to provide cosmetic treatments to the hair, skin, and nails; one trained in cosmetology. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) Well then, what is cosmetology? Cosmetology is the professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, hair, and skin. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) Someone with a cosmetology license may become a makeup artist, a salon manager, a wedding or event stylist, or they could work in labs to develop beauty products. While these are all wonderful career paths, the main focus, and most known cosmetology career, is a hairstylist. Although the job may seem simple enough, there is a long process to becoming a professional cosmetologist, and many people over simplify the career of a hairstylist. The State Board exam tests wanna-be cosmetologists on their skills and cleanliness that are required for a cosmetology license. Some aspiring hair stylists may take up an apprenticeship at a salon to learn the skills and techniques needed to become a professional cosmetologist. Although this is a wonderful learning and working experience, not all apprenticeships can teach you what you need to know for a State Board exam. One way, and the most popular way, to practice and prepare for the State Board exam is to go to cosmetology school. Cosmetology school teaches students the correct skills they need to pass their exams and to become a hairstylist. Cosmetology school isn’t just about hair and makeup; you also learn nails, skin, science, and social skills using hands on learning.
