How long have you been in this profession? Mrs. Roth started working as a cosmetologist in 2009, so she has 8 years of experience.

Where did you study, and what kind of schooling did you complete to get where you are today?

Mrs. Roth studied for one year at a beauty school, called the Elite Progressive School of Cosmetology. She had to complete 1,600 hours of schooling itself. Then, she applied to take the test to get her license with the state board; the test consisted of a practical test and a written test. At her school, she had to pass 3 campus tests, since her school was very strict.

About how much money does an average cosmetologist make?

One needs good customer service; one cannot be rude. One also needs to be patient and prepared to stand all day. Other necessary skills include cutting hair for men and women, coloring hair, styling, doing facials (such as makeup), and doing manicures and pedicures.

What are the advantages of your profession?

It is extra money, a side job. It is quick money and an extra income.

What are the disadvantages of your profession?
Sometimes one has to deal with rude customers.

How did you know this was the right career for you? Did you consider any other careers?

Mrs. Roth chose this career in cosmetology since she was laid off from her job at the school district and was in need of money and a job. Thus, she decided to go to a beauty school for one year. She was only laid off for six months, so she came back to her job at the school district for part time while she finished her schooling.
Mrs. Roth wanted to go to nursing school because she wanted to be a school nurse, which has a quick education of one year. Unfortunately, no one would join her in this career path, so she chose to go into cosmetology instead. Nursing school costs $25,000 for the entire
