One of the main concerns of people in this day in age is the fear of obesity. The media has influenced society in such a way that degrades individuals who do not fit into a certain weight category. However people diet for many different reasons, sports to maintain fit, to look better, or to simply lose some pounds. Because of the mass influence of media on the population today, much of the public is attracted to widely advertised crash diets. A crash diet is eating as little as possible in order to lose weight in a short period of time (Kedge & Wattson, 2009). All food and drink affects the body in some or the other this can either be good or bad. Not getting enough or getting too much may impact the body in negative ways. Many popular fad diets such as yoyo dieting and the Atkinson diet are two diets which can adversely affect the health of those partaking it. When it comes to these diets, yes, dieting is dangerous. The body needs a certain amount nutrition to run in optimum conditions and these crash diets do not sufficiently provide it with enough food to be at this desired state. In fact Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came out with a study in 2009 claiming that 400,000 deaths a year occur as a result of poor diet and lack of exercise (Boaz, 2009). Not only that but as soon as one stops their crash dieting course the weight they so quickly lost is gained back and this time even more excessively (Kedge & Wattson, 2009). The side of effects of diets is not only limited to the person dieting but expands to their family and friends who have to deal with issues of grumpy, ill, or complaining dieters.

Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.

No one wants to be or feel like they are overweight, unhealthy, or unattractive. When someone in the general public looks in the mirror or steps on the scale, and they are not satisfied with what is being shown, one of the first ideas to bubble to the surface is dieting. There are so many dieting solutions out there and one of the most popular are the fad diets. Dieting should be about getting healthy and losing weight in a healthy way. Fad diets however, are about losing a lot of weight in a disproportionally short amount of time. Due to the loss of weight that the dieter wanted, when they reach their goal weight, they stop doing the fad diet and go back to their regular diet. This causes the weight that they shed to be put back on again in a disproportionally short amount of time, which is also just as unhealthy. This cycle of losing and gaining weight is only one of the many dangers of fad diets.

Obesity and overweight remain the two major social problems in the United States. Obesity in the United States is a major issue. Because there is such a high obesity rate, there have been so many diets established to try and reduce these constantly rising rates. A lot of these weight-loss diets that have been established are known as fad diets. A fad diet is a diet that becomes popular quickly, and may die out just as quickly. The person who chooses to lose weight the healthy way realizes that there is indeed a problem and makes a strategically detailed plan as to how they will shed the pounds. They maintain a positive self- image while working towards their goal weight, on the other hand someone who loses weight unhealthily will usually have a negative self- image that is, as a result, accompanied by an eating disorder. Followers of the healthy choice will first figure out why they are unsatisfied with their current weight in addition to learning how to have a positive relationship with their bodies. A person who chooses to lose weight the healthy way will decide that they would rather eat to live than live to eat. They will eat balanced meals using the correct portion size and incorporate physical activity a few times per week as instructed by a physician. This system will allow for a gradual and safe drop in pounds, resulting in weight loss success. In contrast, the results are going to be quite rapid for someone who takes unhealthy measures to lose weight because they are most likely not going to receive their necessary daily nutrients/ calories. Followers of the healthy choice want to fuel their bodies with nothing besides beneficial super- foods that will promote wonderful health, whereas someone who chooses an unhealthy diet will likely starve themselves or binge on high caloric junk
A sad fact in American society is that thousands of people search for the elusive dream of being thin. On any given day, one finds neighbors, friends, and relatives on some kind of diet.
