The Hazards of High Protein, Low Carbohydrate Diets
A young, healthy teenage girl fell to her death after following a high-protein, low carbohydrate diet for no more than two weeks. The girl, having no identified sicknesses or medical conditions, exhibited "electrolyte imbalances" along with minimal levels of potassium and calcium, which appeared to be a result of the diet according to doctors at the University of Missouri Health Science Center. These irregularities upset the "normal electrical function of her heart" causing it to stop and her to collapse ("US teen . . ."). Based on this alone, it is evident that a high protein, low carbohydrate diet is not a safe and healthy long-term weight loss program.
High Protein diets are traced all the way back to the 1800s when William Banting produced a brochure including information and details surrounding the diet. He claimed the newfound diet, which consisted of meat and shockingly, sherry but no bread and very few vegetables, aided him in shedding his unwanted pounds. This is very similar to today's Atkins diet. Originally developed in the 1970s by Dr. Atkins, it, like Banting's idea, believes that carbohydrates are responsible for America's obese society (Applegate 26). Dr. Atkins claimed it was possible to change carbohydrate-burning bodies to fat burning by applying the concept of high protein and low carbohydrate eating. ("How does . . .?"). Nearly ten years later, Americans concluded "fat was . . . fattening," causing people to shift from proteins and fats to hefty serving of "fat-free and high-carbohydrate foods such as bagels and fat-free cookies." However, two large weight loss food corporations, Atkins Nutritionals and the South Beach Company, have successfully marketed their own brand of low carbohydrate diets. These low carbohydrate diets share many similarities, while maintaining distinct modifications between the diet methods.

Compare and Contrast Low Carbohydrate Diets and Low Fat Diets The two most popular methods to lose weight are the low carbohydrate diets and the low fat diets. Both are in complete contrast when it comes to each diet’s food choices, the low carbohydrate diet which completely breaks the food pyramid limits a person to eating foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta and rice, while on the other hand, the low fat diet which follow the food pyramid limits a person to eat foods that are high in fat like meat, milk, and bean groups. Although each diet may sound very different from one another, they also share similarities. Both the low carbohydrate diet and the low fat diet claim that each is a good tool for weight loss.
After entering the religious life he later became an Augustinian monk and entered the Augustinian monastery at Erfurt in July of 1505. While in this monastery Luther became a well known theologian and Biblical scholar. In 1512 Luther earned his doctorate in theology and became a professor of Biblical literature at Wittenberg University.Luther took his religious vocation very serious. Having someone in the family who studied law would be a great asset to Hans Luther, yet young Luther wanted more from life. Studying law wasn’t giving him the assurance he needed in life, he believed law represented uncertainty. He believed he could find that assurance that his soul desired in studying theology. Luther’s professors were becoming accustomed to the nominalist viewpoint, which translated to Luther as a call to question and test the authority of the church.
The method I intend to utilize for this study involves the oral administration of a survey and the calculation of the subject’s individual BMI by a third party licensed clinician in order to maintain the rapport of the clinician and his/her patients. The participants of this survey will include a sample of the entire population of patients who are currently seeking further help for obesity. Each subject will be interviewed by their clinician by being asked a series of questions listed in the protocol of the survey.
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. The Atkins diet is one of the most popular fad diets. Carbohydrates play an important role in the Atkins diet. This diet is based on keeping the carbohydrate level controlled, with a process known as ketosis (Akins par. 3). Because carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source, keeping this level to a minimum causes the body to get energy from a different source. In the place of carbohydrates, stored body fat is burned. Carbohydrates also participate in insulin creation. Insulin is what turns the extra carbohydrates into fat. Therefore, if the body is getting fewer carbohydrates that means less insulin is being created. If less insulin is being created, then less fat is being produced resulting in weight-loss (Atkins par. 5). The Atkins diet is also a 4-phase diet. The first phase of this diet is known as the induction phase. This specific phase lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Along with this phase comes a twenty gram limit of carbohydrates, and no more.
