One of the most notable examples of a “fad diet” is the South Beach Diet, which is known for restricting carbohydrates. Both eating patterns recommend consuming larger quantities of some food groups than others, although which groups varies between the diets. Popular weight loss programs such as Paleo, Atkins, Low-Carb, and South Beach share a common objective: to promote whole foods as a means to achieve weight loss goals and optimum health. All these programs support the proliferation of organic eating in today’s society with the hopes of eliminating the unhealthy effects of artificial sugars, manufactured snacks, and fast food.
Many "diets" are profit-based, meaning if all their customers really lost and kept weight off, they wouldn 't make as much money. "Fad diets" come and go and while somebody is getting rich off of them, most people aren 't really succeeding on them.
With the average weight of Americans continuously rising, fad diets seem to appear everywhere, each claiming that their participants will lose weight faster with their healthier option; however, diets are not at all, what they claim to be and without caution, they too will cause health problems. The American population is fat. What’s worse, we are getting fatter. For many years, a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or more (weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) was the standard criteria for being overweight, and a BMI of 30 or more was the criteria for obesity. This meant that more than one third of U.S. adults were overweight. In recent years the criteria has been reduced to a BMI of 25 or more to be considered overweight, with the obesity criteria remaining the same. Now, more than 50% of U.S. adults are classified as being overweight. Interestingly, as the number of overweight individuals skyrockets, so too does the number of various diets that Americans are willing to try in their search for the thin standard that our culture idolizes. One of the most popular, and many claim successful, of the conglomerate of diets is the Atkins protein diet, named after its founder and guru Dr. Robert C. Atkins. With more than six million copies in print, Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution proclaims to be "the amazing no-hunger weight-loss plan that has helped millions lose weight and keep it off" (Atkins). Sounds great, but what is this diet, and is it too good to be true?
One of the main differences between healthy diet and exercise and fad dieting is they can yield very different long term results. When fad dieting, you may be able to drop quite a bit of weight in a short period of time, but rest assured you will most likely see those pounds again. Fad diets focus on losing weight too quickly. The initial weight you lose is water weight, but as soon as you go back to regular food the pounds lost will return. Fad dieting can also wreak havoc on your muscles, and cause your body to go into starvation mode. It is obvious that Weight Watchers is a healthy fad diet. It does not force carbohydrates and fats, but simply focuses on maintaining calories, unlike the Atkins diet and South Beach diet. Also, Weight Watchers does not promote ketosis, which can also be unhealthy. When choosing a diet, dieters should choose a diet that suits the appropriate calorie level and that is also nutritionally balanced (Choosing par. 2). Weight Watchers fits that category. However, the Atkins and South Beach diet are both healthy in their own way, depending on the intake level.
