Yellow Earth was a movie made in 1984, depicted the life or Chinese villagers during the anti-Japanese war. The Cuiqiao’s family was a representative of countless rural families lived in the Nationalist-controlled area, Cuiqiao was a special character who had the will to break the current situation. Those peasants were kind, hardworking who just want to have food and shelter for living. For example, Cuiqiao’s father married her mother because he had enough food. From their welcoming to the communist soldier Gu Qing, I felt that the villagers lived in the Nationalist-controlled area were superstitious, uneducated and poor. They begged the god for rain; treated Gu Qing well but they kept nodding to the soldier; arrange marriage when people were young for money, making a feeling of the lower class in a feudalistic society. Those villagers were limited in a mind set to keep the traditional but undeveloped ideology. However, the villagers in Yan’an were well-fed, animate and positive. Also, the soldier’s word that chairman Mao wanted every peasant to have rice and Cuiqiao’s songs eulogized the Communist Party because they promised to treat the people equally and be able to lead them to defend the country for better lives.
