Are you always on technology like your phone or computer? If you are then you’re just like Joel from the short story Y2K ChatRm43 written by Aldean Carter. Y2K ChatRm43 is about a teenager named Joel living in 1999 who is always on his computer. Joel created a chat room called Y2K ChatRm43 where he and teenagers from around the world talk about how they can help solve the problems of the new millenium. Joel gets frustrated often due to the chat room getting off the topic. Still though, Joel always enjoys the chat room.The short story proves that teenagers use technology to enhance their social activities. The main character from Y2K ChatRm43, Joel, always uses his chat room to enhance his social activity online. While talking about the success of the chat room Joel says, “Most of the regulators were from around the U.S., but we had quite a few international logins despite the problems of language and time zone. In all, I counted some thirty countries over the course of six months”(Carter 209). Joel was enhancing his social activities through talking with so many new people he meet through the chat room. While Joel is talking about the chat room he explains, “Amazingly the chat room caught on. Not that it was a big fad or anything, but a lot of people stopped by. Most only hung around a few minutes dropped a comment or two, and then cruised off into cyberspace. But a few stayed and kept coming back night after night ” (Carter 209). Although it is true that some teens are less social due to technology is true, kids now are able to stay in contact with each other no matter how far they are from each other.
