Are you always on technology like your phone or computer? If you are then you’re just like Joel from the short story Y2K ChatRm43 written by Aldean Carter. Y2K ChatRm43 is about a teenager named Joel living in 1999 who is always on his computer. Joel created a chat room called Y2K ChatRm43 where he and teenagers from around the world talk about how they can help solve the problems of the new millenium. Joel gets frustrated often due to the chat room getting off the topic. Still though, Joel always enjoys the chat room.The short story proves that teenagers use technology to enhance their social activities. The main character from Y2K ChatRm43, Joel, always uses his chat room to enhance his social activity online. While talking about the success of the chat room Joel says, “Most of the regulators were from around the U.S., but we had quite a few international logins despite the problems of language and time zone. In all, I counted some thirty countries over the course of six months”(Carter 209). Joel was enhancing his social activities through talking with so many new people he meet through the chat room. While Joel is talking about the chat room he explains, “Amazingly the chat room caught on. Not that it was a big fad or anything, but a lot of people stopped by. Most only hung around a few minutes dropped a comment or two, and then cruised off into cyberspace. But a few stayed and kept coming back night after night ” (Carter 209). Although it is true that some teens are less social due to technology is true, kids now are able to stay in contact with each other no matter how far they are from each other. Nevertheless, Goldberger states, “It is the fact that even when the phone does not ring at all, and is being used quietly and discreetly, it renders a public place less public” (558). With this, the youth of American society, when placed in a party with strangers, may express sentiments of shyness or awkwardness. Likewise, instead of socializing, several individuals may use their phone as a way to escape. It is this escape route that makes these “socially awkward” events or places less public; the younger generations are in their own world when they use their cell phone instead of socializing or becoming familiar with the scenery. Thus, progress has mainly caused the youth of American society to become less sociable and tend towards awkwardness; multitudes of individuals today have trouble associating with strangers at a party or how to properly communicate with an employer for a job. Turkle explains that without their only source of feeling connected, teenagers feel anxious and alone. Teens see technology as their only source of connection with the rest of the world. In addition, without technology, teenagers seem uncertain as to how to respond in certain situations, creating a much greater problem than just the feeling of loneliness. It affects their social skills and ability to interact with others in various surroundings. When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. They find it easier just to text someone how to do something instead of meeting up with them as having them explain it to them in person. Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. When these “friends” meet in person, they find nothing to talk about. George Orwell’s 1984 was by far my favorite reading assignment because it is most relevant to my life and today’s society so I was able to connect a lot of things into the book. Given this book was written in 1940 before the true horror of the soviet union was recognized it does a good job almost mirroring the actions of the soviet union, many events that take place in the book also occurred in the soviet union to a much worse extent. I see school as a mild version of the Party at times, ever forcing us to take on more and more rules and forcing us to think certain ways via standardized tests and the like.

Little did people know that technology can impact the way humans interact with each other. While listening to music and playing games on their mobile devices, how many people actually get to know one another while standing right next to each other? A small ride on a metro or bus ride will show you just how little interaction goes on in a humans life do to the amount of use on their mobile devices. The role technology plays in socializing has a great impact on people’s interaction. People can be standing right next to each other with out saying one word to one another. While waiting for the next class to start or even during the class, people tune out the rest of the world and this can lead up to social isolation. Technology has had a bad impact on the way humans socialize because it causes people to be less interactive. Social isolation is a health condition that can become very severe and lead up to depression, anxiety, despair and many other things. Social isolation can be avoided if technology is limited to use at only appropriate times as when bored, alone or incase of an emergency you would use cell phones.
One can debate all day long on whether a chat rooms or good or bad. In the end it boils down to this. Be careful, in what every action you decide to take. There are always consequences, but then there are always good outcomes.

When we talk through messages, it causes conflict resolution, which causes war. What has this world come to, so many kids bring their cell phones to school which distracts them from learning. It is up to the parents to teach their kids the importance of using face to face communication. We cannot back down; limit the amount of electronics they use. We need to make the world more educated with our social skills. If we do not we will begin to rely just on electronics. Connecting through electronic media will never be a satisfactory replacement. “No amount of texting, or blogging or Facebook is as satisfying as a walk in the park with a good friend. Why? Because it is simply our nature” (Stitch 3).
Communicating online too much could hinder our ability to socialize effectively in the real life and interpersonal relationship. People in today’s generation love to communicate on the Internet. Due to the incredible convenience the Internet provides, people became socially dependent on it, therefore their time became preoccupied in front of the computer. Kids who grew up during the computer age show that they lack social skills. They would also feel uncomfortable and awkward when talking to people face to face. This is because they mostly isolate themselves in front of the computer chatting and meeting with people online. Due to lack of knowing other persons’ body cues, facial expression, miscommunication can occur. They are often unaware of the other member’s main idea and simply misinterpreting them.
