Technology: The Impact of the Future In Sherry Turkle’s Growing Up Tethered, Turkle speaks of a term titled the collaborative self. She defines this term by telling many different stories through the lives of high school students. These students focus on this type of compulsive desire to feel socially accepted or connected. The students speak specifically about the anxiety that results from the feedback they receive or do not receive through their phones. Through Turkle’s stories, they agree that they rely on technology in order to live their lives. She states, “On the contrary, teenagers report discomfort when they are without their cellphones” (240). Turkle explains that without their only source of feeling connected, teenagers feel anxious and alone. Teens see technology as their only source of connection with the rest of the world. In addition, without technology, teenagers seem uncertain as to how to respond in certain situations, creating a much greater problem than just the feeling of loneliness. It affects their social skills and ability to interact with others in various surroundings. The desire to try new things and meet new people is also affected, because teens are so occupied with the social life they have created through technology. It's their comfort zone. Furthermore, in her story, Turkle expands on the term of the collaborative self. She does so when she states, “Again, technology, on its own, does not cause this new way of relating to our emotions and other people” (242). Turkle describes that technology is not to blame for the way people connect with others in the world today. She explains it is the responsibility of the individuals using the technology to use it appropriately. It is a great learning tool. However, too much technology may cause harm. The author argues that the society in which young adults grow up, reflects on their view of the world. Growing up in a technologically advanced society, teens seem ill prepared to deal with their day to day surroundings that require social interaction. Many millennials show little interest in anything dealing in the past. Instead, they are focused on the future and the next great technological advancement. Lastly, at the end of her essay, Turkle expresses the true social issues of teens due to the abundance of technology. She claims, “teenagers who will only ‘speak’ online, who rigorously avoid face-to-face encounters, who are in text connect with their parents fifteen or twenty times a day, who deem even a telephone call ‘too much’ (243). Turkle claims that there are consequences resulting on the heavy reliance of technology. Teens only speak over text and cannot even speak on the telephone, because they are too internal. Bauerlein begins his piece by asserting that “digital diversions,” which is anything technological that distracts the younger generation from finer past times, are in fact cutting the younger generation off from culturally enhancing mediums and is in turn making the teenagers less intelligent. Bauerlein continues to claim that it is the responsibility of adults to guide the younger generation towards meaningful topics. The author adds that teenagers live life minute to minute and because of that suggests that the younger generation is not concerned with the past. Bauerlein states that because of technological advances, including cell phones teenagers are in constant contact with each other. The author states that this constant contact with peers makes it very difficult for adults in the younger generation’s life to guide them toward cultural topics. Bauerlein then adds that if the younger generation continues to indulge in “digital diversions” and is not guided by adults to finer pastimes by the time they are in college they will never take part in high culture. Bauerlein concludes that “digital diversions” and lack of adult guidance will result in a less intelligent generation.
In “Connectivity and its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle discusses how often we are found on our technology. Turkle states in her thesis “Technology makes it easy to communicate when we wish and to disengage at will.” In the essay are interviews on several different people, of all ages to get their view on the 21st century. Teens are starting to rely on “robot friendships,” the most communication teens get are from their phones. Are we so busy trying to connect to the media that we are often forgetting what is happening around us?
People deceive themselves that social technology improves human intimacy and help loneness. They think social technology give them opportunities to connect to other even they are far away, and give comfort to them if they need a listener, friend and even lover. Gopnik writes people have causal understanding since they were born by indicating example that “eat more to grow more”. It is the major abilities to make possibilities real. “Once you know how one thing is causally connected to another you can predict what will happen to one thing if you act to change another---you can see what a difference making things different will make. (Gopnik 172) When using social technology, people know that the relationship between it and people themselves help them change to other situation they want. They know phone can help them connect to other but they also understand what might cost them if they continuously pay attention to social technology. But they don’t quit using it because people are allowing it to bring us to places that we don’t what to go.
In “Stop Googling. Let’s Talk,” Turkle provides her research and evidence that people have disconnected themselves from real-world situations. Turkle begins her article by explaining how teens learned that they could be connected to technology on their phones, and still look as if they were present in the conversations they were having. She believes that people’s communication skills have been deeply affected by the overuse of online resources. Turkle began by listing the growing importance of technology for lonely individuals who depend on devices to feel compassion by stating,“we expect more from technology and less from one another and seem increasingly drawn to technologies that provide the illusion of companionship without the demands of relationship” (Turkle). All humans are aware of the abundant amounts of time and effort that go into maintaining a healthy relationship. In the article Growing Up Tethered, Sherry Turkle interviews a selected choice of teenagers from different high schools. As Turkle conducts the interview she asks the students personal questions about the relationship with their phones. Some of the interviews were a little extreme and I would have to disagree with certain responses.
Throughout the interview personal anecdotes along with a vision for the future are brought about. Turkle explains the story of a 15 year old at a birthday party as, being able “to be elsewhere at any point in time” This is rhetorically effective because it causes the intended audience (young adults) to remember when they were 15 and did not have their phone to pull out during a party. Turkle brings up people who “friend” people on Facebook that they do not even know. It is a great point; however, I think that along with “not knowing the nature of their connection,” there is also a security problem. Using the idea of personal security would make this argument more rhetorically effective. Another point that Turkle brings up that is rhetorically effective is how always being on our phones reduces intimacy. She talks about how people always text no matter where they are which impairs their relationships with their friends and family. The next rhetorically effective part of this essay is when they discuss how social media and technology are hindering our ability to be able to be alone. When someone is never alone they do not know how to handle a situation of where they might be alone. Finally, Turkle speaks briefly speaks about a vision she has for the future.
