I understand the fundamentals of writing much more now than I did when I began Writing 101. Prior to this course I felt confident in my writing skills and I rarely felt as though there was something I didn’t understand about writing. After taking those course however, I feel much more educated on how to write a well written, organized, and professional paper. I have learned multiple tools to enhance my papers that I wasn’t even aware existed prior to finishing Writing 101.
I initially took to heart the reading and note-taking strategies learned in week one. Throughout the eight weeks of the course I ensured that I managed my reading time and identified why I was reading the material. For example, while reading Writing For Success, I made sure I took notes and retained what I was reading for future assignments. However, while reading scholarly journals I would be looking for specific information that I could use in my paper.
On multiple occasions I felt as though I comprehended and retained information better than I actually had. This is where Comfit came into play and I am very glad it was a part of this course. Comfit was a great way to test my skills in what we had learned that week and it helped me identify what I needed to focus more on. The graded quizzes are also a great way to check my progress however I preferred

This is the first course I have truly invested myself in because I knew it would have information I will need to know for the rest of my college and professional career. When we learned details of citations I again made sure that I was retaining everything possible about the information. In the past I would have to look up the correct ways to cite every time I wrote a paper. With thanks to this course, I can now confidently write a research paper with in-text citations, hanging citations, and a references page. I also know multiple resources I can use to ensure I am doing it
English 1020 has enhanced my reading, writing, researching and reflecting skills by giving me the opportunity to practice writing, reading, and reflect on diverse topics. My perception of writing was also positively impacted by taking this course. I now view myself as skillful writer rather than just a college student taking writing courses to pursue my degree. I have become a skillful writer because I now take in consideration prior knowledge and new information I have gained from English 1020. I put into practice these skills whenever I write content relating to the four learning outcomes. Reading, writing, researching and reflecting are the four learning outcomes I utilized during the
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Well lets see, “ how will I apply the tips I have learned in this week's assignment?” (unit 1 homework) There is a lot of tips and information in the paper I just read. It is all very good information and helpful, I know it will come in handy not only in this assignment but in all my work throughout this program. I learned the different ways people learn and think and how to work at being those kinds of thinkers and apply that to the papers I write. There is a lot of information out there, knowing where to look is very important and knowing how to incorporate your research is a must. Knowing your subject in and out and the proper way to do so is also important, to write a well informed paper. What I have read will help me with that also.
Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Another course outcome I have mastered in English 102 is continuing to apply the writing skills covered in English 101. One of the course objectives in English 101 was to compose essays with appropriate content development, organization and style by practicing the steps of the
Unit 1 taught me to focus on each step in the writing process. Approaching the task
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
The most important hurdle to overcome in the course was mainly myself and my old writing habits. Adjusting to the course is a goal that one needs to overcome post-haste, the more time it takes one to adjust, the worse your grade will be. A critical aspect of adjusting is the ability to change the writing requirements based on what class one is in. By figuring out the appropriate text to use in each class, it would help one adjust to the course faster. In my history class, writing is mainly facts piled on other facts with no set of techniques, while writing class involves a lot more critical thinking. I extremely enjoyed this course because I found that I can express my own personal views while maintaining the foundation of my papers.
What did you learn from this course? List at least 5 of them and discuss how you plan to use them for your work/home/relationships.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Before this class I didn’t know how to read a book or remember what I was reading. My pace was also a little slower. I also had more mistakes that were made when reading. When I would read I would usually fake it and act like I knew what I was doing, also I didn’t read much because I couldn’t comprehend it. This class has helped me improve my reading skills and it has impacted my performance.
What do you expect to learn from this course that will help you develop in the areas you’ve identified?
This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
