Has the time come to finally erase the term outsider art? Over recent years, the true existence of Outsider Art (and for the time being I will generalize this term to cover the likes of art brut, folk art, psychotic art, primitive art and self-taught art also) has been very much in question. Although that is not entirely correct, as outsider art has been in question from its very first publication of the term, however, recently it has been the obvious problem that goes unaddressed. Within this short essay I will say why I would like to consider outsider art as non-existent and why I think the term should be abandoned.
To address the question properly we must first explain, or sum up, the meaning of outsider art, or the alleged meaning if you will. 1945 seen the somewhat hushed appearance of art brut (raw art), which has been an interest since the beginnings of modernism, and in time has inhabited a fundamental place in the contemporary art world. “A work of art is only of interest, in my opinion, when it is an immediate and direct projection of what is happening in the depth of a person’s being... This of course may sound ridiculous, as I have mentioned that there is outsider art works out there in the world already, they have been documented, presented and popularized. However, the problem is as follows: the concept of avant-garde. For those unaware of this term, avant-garde is the name given to people or works that are regarded as innovative, newly experimental and never seen before, particularly in the art or political worlds. Having said that, are you now wondering where you may have heard that description before? Yes, that does sound incredibly familiar to the description given for outsider artists. Gordon Bennett has created numerous artworks commenting on social issues about aboriginal & indigenous heritage. His artworks often consist of mixed media of acrylic & oil, or sketching. It seems strange that H.P. Lovecraft, who made his fortune from stories about the supernatural, would be seen as not believing in the subject which made him famous. This may subtract from Mosig’s arguments. Also, other sources suggest that this should be read as a horror story; not just for the people who saw the outsider, but also for himself, when he realized his own fate and past. Dirk Mosig’s arguments are convincing however, and his interpretation makes good sense with the complex story that is “The Outsider.”
The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts. Appropriation is a strategy that has been used by artists for millennia. It involves the intentional copying, borrowing and alteration of pre-existing and often popular works. Many artists believe they are re-contextualising or appropriating the original imagery, allowing the viewer to renegotiate the meaning of the original in a different, more relevant, or more current context and that in separating images from their original context, they allow them to take on new meanings. Artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Gordon Bennett use appropriation as a form of bringing new, often personal, meaning to an artwork such as Gordon Bennett’s ‘Outsider’.
Art can mean many different things to many different people and was one of the earliest ways in which man has expressed him or herself to others, whether it was through cave drawings or hieroglyphics. It does not begin or end with just drawing or painting, items typically considered art, or the many other recognized facets of art including architecture, drama, literature, sculpting, and music. Art is a language of its own and with out he proper understanding, people are like expression goes “left on the outside looking in”. In other words, people without the proper understanding of art, technique and form as well as other elements can’t appreciate a work of art as much as when you understand why an artist painted in the way they did and what they are trying to get across to his audience. Modern street art and graffiti are undeniably tied together. Graffiti could be considered the forefather of street art in many ways- it has paved the way for the development of modern street art. Yet, while both are still hotly debated topics, street art is seen in a more positive light while graffiti is still considered to be a negative term. Graffiti is associated with the vandalism that the government desperately wanted to erase. Graffiti has played a huge role in the development of street art that we all know today. Conklin notes this in her paper. She describes graffiti as an exclusive world that only those inside the group are privy to. However, to Conklin, street art is made accessible to all in that it is not necessarily exclusive and that anyone can understand street art, as it is supposed to be a way to communicate with their community. The very form of street art and graffiti differ from one another, as do their messages and end point. Graffiti is a tag of sorts- it relies mainly on text and is used to announce an individual. While some graffiti artists, like the Mission School did plan out their works, graffiti is more about the actual form of rebellion and establishing oneself than it is about the message that it is trying to get across. If it was more inclusive, it would be understandable to people outside to graffiti culture. Street art, on the other hand, takes its surroundings into consideration. Conklin herself notes that the term "street art" was supposed to be in an attempt to portray the work and other similar works in a more positive light. It should be noted, however, that street artists and graffiti artists have often clashed over a difference in opinions.
Art is an expression of feelings, body language, culture produced by humans. Art can be expressed in many different ways, and in many different forms from times periods way before you think! You’d be amazed with the different type of skilled work artist come up with each day and it’s all just someone, one person expressing how they feel or what they believe. One form of art that I find very interesting particular is Fauvism. Fauvism is an expressionism that is expressed by art, music literature. This type of art is the spiritually and emotional vision of the world in Artist eyes. Fauvism was a short-lived movement; it lasted only from the time period of 1905-1908. In my opinion based off of how appealing it was it could have been longer. It originated in France. Artist who produced this type of art work were called fauves, French for “wild beast” because they were described to use intense colors, uncontrollably.
Having the ability to shape a student’s life is truly a gift; so many of my art teachers inspired me to follow my dreams. After hearing Taylor Mali’s poem, What Teachers Make, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher: I want to make a difference. Mali spoke with so much passion as he answered the age old question ‘what do teachers make.’ “I make parents see their children for who they are and who they can be,” this quote really moved me because I think in a lot of situations students’ talents are overlooked by their parents (Mali.) My art teachers always had their hand in the community creating sculptures for the local fire department or crocheting hats and baby booties. I feel good teaching shows students how to apply the knowledge they learned. I want to model what they learned so they can apply it to their everyday life. I attend to teach my students to be active members of society and be aware and respectful of others’ culture, and teach them how to apply the skills they learn in art in their everyday life.
From Mark Twain to Vincent van Gogh, each genre of art comes with its greatest master. There are many compelling arguments to why this specific artist, musician or writer is the best in their category. In modern days, we don’t have a Mozart, or a Hemingway or even an Andy Warhol. There are many good artists of their own kind and many more are emerging thanks to new technology and new forms of media art. However, many arguments are made as to why these forms of art aren’t considered true forms of art. A few years back and even today, many argue that digital paintings aren’t real art so it is not surprising when people don’t think of a video game as an art form, but it is. The world is at constant change and so is art.
Graffiti’s effect on society shows the true reason it should be an art form. It’s visuals allow for the common person to be in wonder at the detail in which some of these pieces. It allows for a new definition to the previously scorned act of graffiti as it brightens up cities all around the world and improves the entire psyche of urban life.
The Creative Arts play a significant role in early childhood education as it provides children with a diverse range of skills to enhance their learning and development to meet the needs of succeeding in the 21st century. In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.

Many students need something to divert their attention away from jaded academics that cause them stress and mental deterioration.
