“Schools cram you too full too fast. I don’t mean they challenge you. I mean they throw to much busywork in your face. Being in school is like being incredibly hungry and sitting at Burger King eating too much, too fast to be satisfied, and then pucking it up. Good learning, like good eating, is not only mental and physical, but also spiritual. Generally you can satisfy the craving only in calm. If you don’t have sufficient time or peace to digest knowledge, it only gives you a headache. (Llewellyn 49)
Learning in the busywork fashion makes it pointless to go to school. Your regurgitation, or rote learning, of random pointless facts about the antebellum period or how many molecules of oxygen it takes to convert sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid will not help facilitate learning. This is because you are not learning. You are memorizing. Learning is from doing, from using, from trying and failing. The usage of grades as a basis for failing or passing is wrong. This is because of how little feedback they give. They shouldn’t be used to “tag the unfit” or to “ wash the dirt down the drain.” (Gatto 4) The gradual increase of knowledge, experience, and love from doing things, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, is learning. If someone wants to learn they will pursue this knowledge, and in turn become successful in learning. It may not be possible to remove all rote learning from school, but it is possible to remove it from classes, like science or English, that don’t need it.

They need to know why their math formula is like it is, or why iron oxidizes not that it does. With these things changed in school, students may actually enjoy going to school and learn at the same time. There is no point, besides keeping the kids out of the house, to go to school. You are not learning. Schools should be a time of joy and happiness, but can anyone honestly answer yes to the question of returning to grade school? Why would a child want to waste their life not actually learning? I am sure their parents didn’t.

Many individuals have been affected negatively by trouble makers in school. Troublemakers have either disrupted classes or bullied other students. Yes, trouble makers may harm one’s learning environment, but should they be kicked out of school? Though many individuals argue that troublemakers will not change and hold the class down, they should not be kicked out because they need help. Most of these kids that are disobedient do not know the distinction between right and wrong. We should not withdraw trouble makers from school, rather, we should help these troublemakers and teach them right from wrong. In the article “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, she states that American high schools are disasters because there are troublemakers (694). She asserts that the withdrawal of troublemakers in schools would make the learning environment peaceful for students who want to learn
Before we can look at how grading affects learning Farber suggests we look at how it has affected students (333-334). The greatest effect of being graded happens to the individual. Farber asks, “Did you need grades to learn how to drive?” We have become “grade junkies.” Without the grades students can’t learn (333). Vogel agrees that students believe grades are the motivating factor in learning, but only for the money. Students want the grades because high GPA’s equal high paying jobs (338-339). Another negative effect of grades is that students want the best grade with the least amount of learning but this causes conflict with professors because the professor’s goal is different compared to the student’s (339). Grades have positive effects too. Farber believes that grades give us discipline, but not self-discipline. True self-discipline comes from wanting something not coercion (334). Farber defines self-discipline as revising one paragraph all night because one enjoys it (334.)
The controversial topic about the function of school is discussed at many school board and PTA meetings throughout America. In Anita Garland’s opinion, schools are not functioning properly. Garland states her reasons as to why the purpose of school has to change in her article, “Lets Really Reform Our Schools”, where she starts off by saying, “Desperate illnesses require desperate remedies. And our schools are desperately ill.” She proceeds to list the remedies in order to transform our schools into a more healthy, successful environment. School is something we all know and understand. Regardless of whether we wanted it or not, we have all passed through school. School is, first and foremost, a place designed for people to go and learn. It is a place to better yourself, to learn facts, discipline, to learn social and economic skills. But for all that school is intended for, people go for different reasons. Some are hardworking and academically minded, they go to learn, to set a good foundation for their future, with an aim of becoming successful and accomplished in their career. In “What’s Wrong with Schools,” Casey Banas uses the experiences of Ellen Glanz, a high school social studies teacher to express how different students and teachers feel about schooling. Ellen Glanz chooses to improve her teaching by pretending to be a student and sitting in on several classes and what she finds in the typical classroom includes students doing the bare minimum, disinterest, cheating, detachment, the list goes on and on. I agree with Ellen Glanz in that this separation between educators and students causes a great amount of passivity. Unfortunately, these types of circumstances in classroom settings are becoming more and more typical.
Let’s flash back in time to before our college days. Back to then we had lunch trays filled with rubbery chicken nuggets, stale pizza, and bags of chocolate milk. A backpack stacked with Lisa Frank note books, flexi rulers, and color changing pencils. The times where we thought we wouldn’t make it out alive, but we did. Through all the trials and tribulations school helped build who I am today and shaped my future. From basic functions all the way to life-long lessons that helped shape my character.
School is a step to success; getting students to come together more and become antisocial but abolishing class is not what should pass along with giving days off and doing away with curriculum is not the answer to helping children. Many people make mistakes, and it is okay to make them because no one is perfect. Learning from your mistakes makes it all worthwhile. In everyone’s life, instances occur where they make a mistake and they remember it for a long time because it led them to realize that we all have faults. The most important thing is to make sure that we learn from it, and homework enables students to do that.
One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
Rote education in not an active learning method, as compared to meaningful learning. It is an ineffective tool in education. Educators, mostly from Asia countries, they force their students to memorize. Learners memorize facts blindly without any understanding. This could bring us serious consequences. This is because one will be uncertain and not sure in utilizing the information they had memorize in some problem solving task or practical purpose activities. They are more theoretical based. Besides that, learning through memorization makes one unable to connect all the knowledge they have been taught together. They simply do not have the ability to link all the knowledge up to apply in homework, even in the daily life. Its time to change the school system to save future students from becoming stress crazed and to let them know that there is more to this world than a grade card and in the long run it is a very small fraction of life.
Many students suffer from the school system. Many students face problems in schools because lack of the system. There are so many problems in school that should never be there, education now involving more problems than anything else. In recent years so many people have lost their lives in the class-room. There are ways to improve school system by police presence, to end overcrowded condition, and to hire more qualified teachers.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
