According to the research firm NPD Group, activewear has an estimated market size of $44 billion in the US alone. In recent years, the popularity and sales of athleisure have skyrocketed and I for one, am not complaining. But Honor Jones, who penned the article, “Why Yoga Pants Are Bad for Women” most certainly is. The thing is, yoga pants definitely aren’t bad for women, but denouncing how other women choose to look and dress certainly is.
I’d like to start this off by agreeing with Honor Jones. It is true that “it’s not good manners for women to tell other women how to dress” and it is true that yoga pants can get are expensive. However, my agreement with Jones ends there.

Along with that, it opens the gates of a completely different issue: slut-shaming.
And yes, Honor Jones is most definitely slut-shaming. First, Jones makes a point to state that women wear “Saran-wrap-thin yoga pants” in cold weather but she herself doesn’t. By dividing herself from other women, Jones is trying to make the not-so-subtle argument that she is somehow better than the rest of us. That just because some women feel confident wearing yoga pants out in public, they are doing something inherently wrong. Promoting this mindset is harmful to women everywhere.
In order to move forward as a society, we can’t berate people who don’t look the way we do and we can’t tell people off for dressing a little differently. Slacks are incredible. You can look professional and their comfortable. Khakis and a blue blazer? Stylish and beautiful. Sweatpants? You do you. Pantsuits? Conquer the world. All of the above were listed as alternatives to yoga pants, but why alternate at all? You can wear your pantsuit to work tomorrow and then spend the next day lounging in sweatpants and the next going to a SoulCycle class wearing yoga pants and a matching sports
Dennis Wilson, the founder of Lululemon, believed that the cotton fabric that was being used for yoga at the time, was unsuitable for the sweaty sport (“Lululemon Athletica: Our Company History.” 2014). As a result, Wilson decided to open a design studio in 1998, which would specialize in making yoga-wear from technical athletic fabrics. Wilson aimed to make active-wear that was not only durable, but could also be considered stylish.

In the article, “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hanna Berry, Berry discusses how for decades women have been told to use certain products and that if they used those products they would be beautiful. Women over the years have believed this idea and would purchase items that promised to make them prettier, thinner, smarter and even more loved. However, in reality it was never what they wore on their bodies that helped them be any of those things; but what it did help with was to empower women to become fearless and bold by what they chose to wear on their bodies as a form of expression.
Since lululemon athletica caters to men and women, their product mixes for each gender vary a bit. On the women’s end, lululemon athletica is mainly known for their extremely comfortable yoga and workout leggings. Their leggings are categorized by tightest fit to loosest fit when you walk into a storefront. They then are categorized by length and size: cropped, full-length, or 7/8.
The first Lululemon store was initially created as a place for people to gather to learn and share ideas about a healthy lifestyle. As the company expanded, Lulu could no longer target every individual walking into the store with knowledge of healthy living. At this point, the company shifted its focus to educating their employees who could positively influence everyone who walked into the stores. The thought and reasoning that went into the first Lulu store has continued as the company has grown. It has continued to target active people while pushing everyone towards a healthy lifestyle. Its main target market is young woman, between 15 and 34 years old, in the middle to upper classes. One of Lulu’s top products is its yoga pants, which along with a majority of the products Lulu creates, are made to wear during exercise. The style and fit of this clothing helps men and women alike to look good while working out, this leads to a boost in self-confidence and self-esteem. On the other hand, the close fitting material incentivizes people to stay active and eat healthy in order to fit into the clothing that is offered by Lululemon. In the past few years Lulu has expanded its target market to include active males as well. The same material is used in the male products, so the male consumers benefit in similar ways as the woman consumers.
I feel that in today’s society that men are discriminated against for the way they wear their clothes, specifically, their pants. For many guys sagging your pants are a fashion statement, although many people perceive individuals sagging their pants as “bad” individuals. As a kid, I did wear my pants below my butt, but as I grew older, it gradually raised. I am a professional person, but my style and my comfort have my pants lie just below my hips. I wear a belt, but having my pants all the way above my waist makes me extremely uncomfortable. Even for my wedding, I had to have my pants altered, because tuxedo pants only sit high on the waist. I find it hard to have a law against someone’s choice of fashion, and that one could get fined in some states for sagging your pants. It seems a bit discriminatory when some women can go out barley wearing anything and get fined. The sagging pants law should be eradicated because it is discriminatory and a waste of resources, and instead left up to the community to decide weather they would like to provide services to people who sag their pants.
Third, I would dress according to the occasion, in this case I would set aside professional clothing. Again, first impression in job fairs are crucial.
Kim Addonizio gives stereotypes a whole new meaning by closely looking into the most typical clichés there are. Out of the many clichés, she touches the lust for that one tight; flimsy, cheap, revealing dress. These clichés' scorn women for wanting to wear a dress that may be too revealing looks cheap or looks “too” tight. Many women are subjected to this stereotype because it “typically” doesn’t conform to others’ opinions. I went to Bellaire High School and the authorize individuals always emphasized the importance of grooming yourself properly. The school would make the individuals sagging their pants wear rope. Society may believe that individuals that sag come from broken homes or didn’t have a father figure. Firstly, Sarah Murdoch, the representative of Bonds underwear, is of the opinion that fashion industry encourages “unhealthy body images” (Dunkerley, 2008) that is thought to be unrealistic and unhealthy for most women and girls. Besides, the fact that most designers prefer to choose thin models than bigger size ones (Bolger, 2007) shows us an astonishing phenomena that there are series of clothes from size 0 to size 4 seen not only in the fashion shows but also even on the sale markets because they think that there will be “stigma attached” when doing something for “plus-size people” (Stevens, 2010). Naomi Crafti representing Eating Disorders Victoria thinks that teenagers are becoming obsessed with “the very skinny models on the catwalk” in the fashion shows (Stevens, 2010) which gradually leads to “eating disorders, mental health” and “negative body image on young people” (Stevens, 2010). Fashion industry skinny trend seems to poison young women’s attitude towards their appearance.
Proper attire and good attitude is very important in evaluation of first impression. In the company, there are rules that I must obey and comply. This include in time management, and appearances. It is a big responsibility for me because when I was assigned to to my training in the company, I bring USM image with me too.
