The Controversial Issues of Sagging
Sagging of ones’ pants is a very controversial issue of todays’ society. Sagging is a form of fashion where an individual wear their pants below the waste showing their underwear. It is believed that sagging of the pants originated in the prison system. One reason I believe that sagging started there is because belts were not allowed in prison. According to a document that MSNBC published, they interview an individual named Fleece Johnson and he stated that sagging of the pants indicated homosexuality. It also indicated that the individual was available. I have not seen any concrete evidence that made this statement true. In todays’ society I believe that minorities mimic what they see on television. Many

Even though you are your own person sometimes we have to form different identities in order to no be labeled. Some may refer to this as double consciousness. To some people it will not matter what you wear you will be frowned upon because you’re a minority. A minority in my own definition is someone that is not apart of the majority of the people. Race does make up a part of the minority, but different life styles that are not politically correct in the eyes of the majority of the population makes you a minority also. Civilization may view people that sag their pants as disrespectful, uneducated or thuggish. I went to Bellaire High School and the authorize individuals always emphasized the importance of grooming yourself properly. The school would make the individuals sagging their pants wear rope. Society may believe that individuals that sag come from broken homes or didn’t have a father figure. These are just stereotypes this holds no truth many college graduates, stable house hold individuals merely dress like this because this is an era that will hopefully pass over soon. Not only will pants sagging cause you to be stereotyped but it can be hazardous to your …show more content…
I believe that this may be violating our constructional rights. Even if there are no bans in the city that one lives police will profile an individual that sags. My cousin that sags his pants was just walking down the street one day and he was harassed by police. They told him that he fit the description of a person that they were on the lookout for. Of course he is young and doesn’t know when to shut his mouth so he ended up going to jail for disorderly conduct. He was eventually released a few days later. I believe if there is going to be a ban to pants sagging this rule should apply to women also. I also believe that instead of violating our amendment rights such of freedom of speech and expression they could concentrate on the violent crimes of the
He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 16 years, on the terms that “married women have the right to choose their own destiny” .
Have you asked yourselves why so many people go crazy over low rise jeans? Especially to women who do not want to have any waistband cutting along the abdomen area.
The search for one’s identity can be a constant process and battle, especially for teenagers and young adults. Many people have a natural tendency to want to fit in and be accepted by others, whether it be with family, friends or even strangers. They may try to change who they are, how they act, or how they dress in order to fit in. As one gets older, society can influence one’s view on what they should look like, how they should act, or how they should think. If society tells us that a certain body type or hair color is beautiful, that is what some people strive for and want to become in order to be more liked. This was especially true with Avery as she longed for the proper clothes to fit into a social group and began to change the way she spoke to match those around her. As a young and impressionable sixth grader, she allowed herself to become somewhat whitewashed in an attempt to fit in with the other girls. However, Avery did not really become friends with any of those girls; her only real friend was
When we are encountered by someone who is of "mixed races" we subconsciously attempt to put them in a racial category for our own ease and comfort. When we are unable to categorize an individual based on their race, society views them as being without an "identity". Society has the urge to continue to categorize people because it dictates how they shall be treated going forward based unsubstantiated beliefs. Omi and Winant refer to those who operate based on racial beliefs as "amateur
...he boy sagging his pants like his Hip-Hop idol, or the convenience store owner who puts up a sign refusing service to those who sag their pants. This is not a serious problem that we need to combat, like the war on drugs, but something that many just don’t like.
Depending on who you ask, this fashion became popular in the early 1940’s. As we can see, history has a tendency to line things up for the “perfect storm.” This just so happen to be the time that thousands of service men, fresh out of boot camp arrived in Los Angeles looking to blow off steam before being deployed into combat around the world. To these service men, large baggy pants and jackets were a symbol of hate or disrespect to the
“The situation is very different for members of racial minorities, whose lives are strongly influenced by their race or national origin regardless of how much they may choose not to identify themselves in terms of their ancestries.” Quoted by Mary Waters. For non-whites, you cannot turn on and off your ethnic background in order for you to be able to enjoy a certain holiday for one day. It is not as easy as taking off a costume, and being able to ignore that ethnic background until that time of year comes around again where you put on a green shirt to celebrate your “Irish background” for Saint Patrick’s day, you are that ethnicity, and you cannot hide it. When I go out the next day in my everyday clothing, I will not receive harassment for what I wear, and I will not be targeted because I fit a profile of a certain ethnicity, I am white therefore I am “American”? I can possess a symbolic ethnicity, but for many non-whites, it is not an
What ever happened to having your pants on your waist? It’s apparently now called a “fashion” to have them below your ass. Though sagging looks hideously ridiculous there is some history behind it I bet many of you do or don't know. For instance According to Greg Mathis, sagging was adopted in the United States prison systems where belts were sometimes prohibited to prevent prisoners from using them as a weapon or committing suicide by hanging themselves but that style was later popularized by hip hop artists such as snoop dogg and others in the 1990’s.
Have you ever had someone call you a name for what you and many others did because of your race or background? I have come across this issue myself. Apparently, if I eat chicken and drink Kool-Aid, preferably grape flavored, I am officially considered Black or African American. However, there’s more, if I do not wear baggy clothing, speak and act properly, and wear high-end brands such as Hollister or American Eagle, I am called an “Oreo”; meaning I am considered black on the outside and white on the inside. This is very similar to the appearance of an Oreo.
On June 11, 2007, Delcambre Louisiana introduced the first ‘Pull Up Your Pants’ law in America to include a penalty of six months in jail or a $500.00 for weary pants sagging below the waist and revealing a person’s buttocks covered only by an undergarment (Koppel, 2007). This public indecency campaign, directed primarily at African American youth, continues to show intolerance and contempt for this social faction 's form of fashion and cultural expression of low-slung pants. However, Laurel’s city attorney Deidra Bassi of Laurel Mississippi’s 2015 Pull Up Your Pants campaign is concerned this could be perceived and challenged as a violation of civil rights (Howell, K. 2015).
According to Silvia Bellezza, a doctoral candidate in marketing at Harvard Business School in Boston, “Nonconformity leads to positive inferences of status and competence when it is associated with deliberateness and intentionality..” Intentional deviance from a norm can project heightened status and competence by signaling that one has the autonomy to act according to one’s own inclinations (Silvia Bellezza). For example, in one study she found that participants perceived an individual deliberately wearing a red bow tie at a black-tie party in a country club as a higher-status member of the club and a better golf player than a conforming individual wearing a black bow tie. This enhances one's sense of freedom which allows a person to have their own identity in the crowd. Amanda Chatel, a writer for Bustle, claims that “Being your darling and the bizarre self who does their own thing is the best thing you can be... in life… the dating world, online or otherwise.” Being yourself can increase one's charm. As stated in the second paragraph, “those who march to the beat of their own drummer,” or follow their own constitution are, “far more attractive than those who are just like...everyone else.” Although some conformists accept who they are, your true identity can encourage positivity within yourself. For instance, this can be beneficial for one's self-esteem and confidence, constructing that
The issue of sagging pants has always been controversial. Some would argue that sagging is a temporary fashion statement, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Others would say sagging isn’t professional, and won’t get you far. After all, being a black man in the United States is hard enough. We don’t need any additional stereotypes that we are “gang affiliated”, or have no knowledge of “common decency”. As defined the Merriam Webster Dictionary, sagging is an object declining to a lower level. Sagging pants is a widespread controversy in our nation, this issue has led to many campaigns t advocate against young men, especially Black males from wearing their pants at an unnecessarily low level. I am against sagging pants because it isn’t morally right, displays a lack of discipline, and places more burdens on black males within the society.
Our people are too blind to realize what fashion can do to a person. Sure first impressions are influenced by appearances. It’s true indeed that the first trait when people see each other for the first time is what they are wearing. However where do we draw the line? People excessively attempt to imitate runway models or their favorite artists. Becoming too wrapped up following the newest trend or the hottest style this season. Men and women desperately try to mold themselves into fashions “ideal body.” Fashion is harmful to society; it promotes harmful lifestyle choices, can contribute to bullying and often causes debt problems to young woman.
Being able to identify with a certain group has been an issue that individuals hesitate with daily. Am I Black, are you a girl, what religion do you practice? These are all common questions that society has forced individuals to concentrate on. Should an individual have to pick a side or is it relevant to the human race to identify with any group? One may believe not, but for others having and knowing one’s own identity is important, because it is something that they have been developing their entire life. Along with how their identity influenced their life chances and their self-esteem. This can also affect how society interact with whatever identity an individual chooses to live. Which is why it was important to recognize how identifying
In the world of fashion, there is denim. It is one of the world’s oldest fabrics, and has been modified and remodelled to go with the latest fashion trends. The first ones who wore this fabric are workers in the California Gold Rush era, designed by Jacob Davis because of its sturdy material that withstood the harsh working conditions. Not just them, even sailors from Italy use this material too as their sailing uniform. Then, it started appearing as an actor’s apparel, and that’s when denim started to become one of a fashion item. People started wearing jeans as part of their daily apparel and even adding their own ideas, such as studs and colouring it with different shades of denim. It doesn’t only stop around that era, but today, they are seen everywhere and has become a major clothing piece for almost all of the age groups. As a reference, we can see young children already wears jeans as part of their clothing, the teenagers added jeans to their wardrobe, and even for the seniors, they consider jeans as a simple and comfortable clothing pieces.
