Teachers have affected many over the years. Without teachers many wouldn’t know how to count, tie their shoes, or even read. Teachers are a huge part of our community and should be paid the same as doctors. Doctors heal the body and mind, while teachers create and inspire those very minds. Teaching is a lower salary career, compared to other careers like computer programming,registered nurse and even accounting. Now of course there is many different wages and routes can be attained while teaching. A teacher can be public, private, early childhood, primary, secondary and special education. Salaries with teaching can vary on which county, state, country, union, higher education and what the teacher decides to teach. Which makes its hard to determine if all teachers are underpaid or overpaid. Just focusing on public school teachers because they are underpaid from the differences of salary wages, certain statistics saying teachers are overpaid, and dividing of government funds.

Salary schedules for public school teachers are almost a common feature in public school districts. These schedules largely determine the salaries for the teachers. A single district schedule sets the pay for hundreds of thousands of teachers in thousands of schools (Besharov 1). The key factor that influences the pay for the teachers in the salary schedules include experience in terms of years and the total number of graduate course works that a teacher has completed. In my experience, the majority of my teachers were dedicated and caring people to their work. Although many would not want to admit it, money can be the deciding factor in some things. Public school teacher salaries can vary depending on the state that they teach in. According to Yakima Herald the average pay in 25 out of the 50 states for an elementary school teachers is less than $40,000. She also states that 13 states paid their teachers $45,000 or more (1). The amount of money that a teacher receives is very low. In North Carolina teachers are under payed as well. In most states teachers have a chance to increase their pay by going back to school and getting a Masters degree. In 2013 the governor of North Carolina decided to get rid of tenure for teachers and also to get rid of the pay increase for teacher with their masters degree (Banchero 1). To have a bachelors degree or even a masters degree and to be making under $50,000 is something that one should take into consideration when deciding on a career. The city, the suburbs, and rural areas all have schools because students are required to go to school. This creates limited travel for teachers because teachers can live in the area they decide to teach. The most travel teachers have to do is on field trips. School can be frustrating for students. Going to school, doing homework, and then repeating it all over again the next day can become quite tedious. Especially when one feels as if they are not gaining anything from doing well in school, it causes students to have very little motivation to complete their schoolwork. Students might be motivated if there was some sort of incentive for attending school and doing well at it. A law should be passed that requires students to be paid for doing well in school because it gives them motivation, helps them with financial issues, and allows them to learn how to manage money more effectively.

When choosing ones profession there are always two important questions to ask yourself. Is it what you love doing, and is the pay going to be enough to support you. For me the second question has never had much of an impact on my decision, along with most others who are educators or wish to become one. Teaching is not a job that one chooses to be rewarded by the pay. It is a job that is chosen for the rewarding feeling of knowing that it is the most effective, and most enjoyable way one can change the world; therefore, if teachers are noble enough to sacrifice such a huge aspect just to better our future generations, then don’t you think they should be paid what they deserve?
I am proud to be a teacher in Orange County Schools and I know that even with the huge issue of teacher salary, Orange County Schools will keep teacher moral up and show teachers how much they are appreciated and acknowledge them for all of their outstanding work! This can be done without money and has a tremendous impact when times are tough!
All in all, teachers need to be viewed as professionals and not as simply pay babysitters because most do care about the students. Teachers tolerate the low wages, long hours and repetitive disrespect because they desired to place attention on student success. Teachers should not enter that career for the money, but for the devotion they will place on the students. Luckily there are ways to make teachers more valuable in society. Teachers should be given the right equipment to teach the subject that corresponds to them, the two-year skill evaluation should be more precise and by surprise, so no one knows. Also, students should be allowed to evaluate the teachers to provide feedback. Also, teachers should be aware of the surrounding cultures. In conclusion, teachers should motivate students to reach levels they themselves never thought they could attain.
We have to admit that humans often need incentives. For most people, money is a driving force which can inspire them to make progress (Barbieri, 52). If by performing better, you could earn more money, I think most people would gladly perform well and strive to achieve better results. Teachers are also human beings, and the vast majority of them would feel the same. Higher wages can increase the enthusiasm and motivation of teachers. At the same time, merit pay can improve teachers’ motivation, not only because of the money, but also because of a sense of accomplishment (Honawar and Olson, 26-27). When a teacher, through his or her own careful research of teaching strategies, passion, and devotion to teaching, help his or her students get better grades and is also rewarded by the schools, he or she will be filled with a sense of purpose. This will make that teacher know his or her effort is worth it, and in following lessons he or she would strive to expend even more energy and time to improving his or her teaching level and quality.
