Educational Issues and Trends
There are many current educational issues. The lack of Parent involvement and support is definitely one. This is especially the case at our title 1 schools. It is a struggle to get many parents to be involved in their child’s education. Another current educational issue is the lack of support and assistance for classroom teachers. For example, there are some schools where each kindergarten and first grade has a full time assistant. I teach first grade but share an assistant with two other first grade classes. We have reading teachers, however they only serve 3-5 students at a time out of 60+ students. With class sizes increasing, it becomes more and more difficult to meet each students needs without proper assistance.
The biggest educational issue in North Carolina at the moment is teacher salary. It is all over the news, and social media. Everyone is aware of the current low salaries, which have been “frozen” for years. Even though everyone is aware of the situation and most people are sympathetic, no body knows how much it is hurting our state and the families of teachers except for the teachers themselves.
Somehow there doesn’t seem to be enough money to give teachers even a cost of living raise. Since I have moved to North Carolina I have not had a raise. My salary is the same as it was 5 years ago. I have 8 years of teaching experience, however, I am getting paid as if I only have 3 years of experience. Somehow we need to figure out a way to give teachers enough of raise each year to keep them from quitting their professions, moving to another state, or having to get a second job. Ideally we need to figure out a way to pay teachers what they deserve based on their education and experience. However until we are in the position to do that, I think that even a little raise and a promise that it would continue to raise each year might be just enough to keep some teachers that we are currently loosing.
I am proud to be a teacher in Orange County Schools and I know that even with the huge issue of teacher salary, Orange County Schools will keep teacher moral up and show teachers how much they are appreciated and acknowledge them for all of their outstanding work! This can be done without money and has a tremendous impact when times are tough!

How will this growing problem be fixed, not only in the United States but the world as well? One important action is to continue the effort to improve schools worldwide. When was the last time that you saw a teacher sporting off a brand new Lexus? Or when was it that you heard of a teacher owning a ranch? The answer to this question is probably never. Although material possessions such as owning a luxurious home or driving an extravagant car might be chump change for people like the rich and famous, for teachers this kind of spending is literally an arm and a leg. Even simple necessities are out of reach with a teacher’s salary. The reason for this problem is due to our nation’s budget. Teachers along with others in the school system are underpaid and are not being adequately compensated for their services. Instead of rewarding teachers with higher pay the government is undermining their work. As a result, teachers are unable to buy that expensive car or even pay off that Honda that they bought when they were in college working for their teaching degree. School budgets must be increased immensely in order to insure the educational growth of students and the professional development of teachers. There are four main reasons that are discussed in this paper, as to why more money should be spent on education.
According to the California Department of Education’s Statistics overall spending for education over the last five years have shown an upward trend in spending for schools. Over the last five years spending for education has gone up by 28% (California Department of Education). It went from an average expenditure per student of $4570.00 to $6360.00 (California Department of Education). Though over the last five years spending has headed in the right direction it has not done so in a fast enough manner. The average rate of growth for the educational budget has been 8.6% (California Department of Education) a year over the last five years. This is barely above the rate of growth of enrollment of 6%(California Department of Education). We are not moving forward in fact it would seem like we are treading water. With the upcoming cuts in educational spending for the 2003-2004 school year we will actually be losing ground.

All in all, teachers need to be viewed as professionals and not as simply pay babysitters because most do care about the students. Teachers tolerate the low wages, long hours and repetitive disrespect because they desired to place attention on student success. Teachers should not enter that career for the money, but for the devotion they will place on the students. Luckily there are ways to make teachers more valuable in society. Teachers should be given the right equipment to teach the subject that corresponds to them, the two-year skill evaluation should be more precise and by surprise, so no one knows. Also, students should be allowed to evaluate the teachers to provide feedback. Also, teachers should be aware of the surrounding cultures. In conclusion, teachers should motivate students to reach levels they themselves never thought they could attain.
In the case of “Faculty Empowerment and the Changing University”(pgW-119), the discussion covers two examples of teaching, both which exhibit a traditional classroom approach and the other more increasing online course which has been climbing in schools globally. The case attempts to explain different methods of teaching for adult learners who have grown in numbers over the years as well as the new approaches to schedules for classes for the adult learner. Because the education field has become a more business type model, it has forced many colleges and adult learning schools to standardize their form of teaching. We have to admit that humans often need incentives. For most people, money is a driving force which can inspire them to make progress (Barbieri, 52). If by performing better, you could earn more money, I think most people would gladly perform well and strive to achieve better results. Teachers are also human beings, and the vast majority of them would feel the same. Higher wages can increase the enthusiasm and motivation of teachers. At the same time, merit pay can improve teachers’ motivation, not only because of the money, but also because of a sense of accomplishment (Honawar and Olson, 26-27). When a teacher, through his or her own careful research of teaching strategies, passion, and devotion to teaching, help his or her students get better grades and is also rewarded by the schools, he or she will be filled with a sense of purpose. This will make that teacher know his or her effort is worth it, and in following lessons he or she would strive to expend even more energy and time to improving his or her teaching level and quality. Meanwhile, outstanding teachers will also become role models for other teachers who do not get bonuses. In this case, in a school, it will form a healthy competition among teachers. There are platitudes of issues and elements that pertain to the educational process as well as curriculum development that are addressed on a routine basis. As many researchers have discussed, and administrators and teachers alike have grown to understand, if this current educational model/system is to produce creative, productive, active, and technologically savvy students-citizens the worst actions are perhaps having no actions at all (Stansbury, 2013). In addition to the grandiose mistakes of becoming stagnant (progress), educators and administrators are faced with increasing demands at the highest levels; this of course is making reference to both federal and state legislation such as No Child Left Behind, perhaps the most groundbreaking legislation to date. These rigorous demands are curriculum based, creating definitive and innovative opportunities for educators, especially those in positions to promote and formulate new curriculum models as well as propose the implementation of a new curricula into the system, to better prepare students within their educational system/process exactly what the demands of a 21st century requires. These demands are in reference to an article written by Richard Long titled Career Success Demands Strong 21st Century Literacy Skills. Long states several skills that will be required if American students are to play catch –up with the rest of the world as well as perhaps attain their position at the top of the upper echelon of world educational rankings (Long, 2010).
Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. In today’s society, gaining a high level of education is almost always mandatory for many jobs. There are many changes being done to the education system along with new items and ways of teaching in the classroom. There is a growing amount of changes in the classroom such as technology, teaching time, teaching styles, and freedom of space.
Education is a very important aspect of the lives of all people all over the world. What we learn, not just in the classroom, shapes who we are. We take our education everywhere we go. We use it when talking to our buddies about sports or music, we use it while solving a math problem, we use our education while debating with our family whether or not we should watch TV or go to the movies. Our education is the foundation of who we are, since every decision we make and every thought we think is dependent on what we know. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone craved learning to such a degree that at lunch tables all over the world the topic of conversation isn't who likes who, or how drunk someone got over the weekend, but it would be what books were read over the weekend, and what new ideas were thought of. This crave for learning would be an ideal but still suggests need for improvement with the current educational system. It seems that the problem with education is that somewhere along the lines the human race forgot (assuming they, at one point, understood how valuable information is) that learning is not just a mandatory process, but also an opportunity to transcend and open the gateway to a better understanding.
During the interview, I noticed several different times the answers Dr. Mitchell’s provided reflected current educational trends. The strong focus on literacy and math did not just being this century; however the addition of science and technology has been added. He expressed throughout his career as a teacher, there was a big push for reading and math preparation. Now, as a school leader, he finds STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to be just as important as literacy. Dr. Sarah Eaton (2010), claims in her presentation titled, 7 Global Trends in Education in the 21st Century, that “Technology will not only enhance education, it will drive learning of all kinds.” Technology has broken barriers and students will be able to

Public school education system is important and should be taken very seriously. It is the starting foundation to each and every one of our lives. Our educators, lay down the pathway for education.. In today’s world, teachers play a big role in building America. They are the ones who encourage our children to excel into their greatest self. Without teachers, society would face a drastic downfall. There would not be many professions around. Doctors would be unable to save the lives of our friends and families. There would not be any police officers to protect and serve, nor there be a president to lead this country. The public school education system, as a whole, is something that has been over looked for some time. While other professions are progressing in life, the Public Education System, in general, is staying the same. Teaching is not an easy job. The hours are long, the demands are high, and the working conditions are often challenging .Given the conditions, in which, this profession is carried out, a better financial plan is needed to accommodate for the, unbalanced, priority.
