According to Early Childhood Education Today by George S. Morrison, it states that professionalism is built upon individual responsibility, integrity, and ethical practices that demonstrate respect for all children and their families. There are four concepts of professionalism which include, personal characteristics, educational attainment, professional practice, and public presentation. There are a variety of key components that contribute to professionalism in a classroom and we are going to discuss many of those today.
In order to practice professionalism, I feel it is important to discuss and reflect on the National Association for the Education of Young Children code of ethics and conduct. This touches on a range of topics from confidentiality, to self-awareness, as well as how to publicly represent yourself as a professional. There are many key components to shaping a young child 's life and could be better implemented through professionalism. I like to reflect back to the “Children See Children Do” video, which clearly proves children imitate/learn verbal and nonverbal cues from adults. As a teacher, it is necessary to be the best version of yourself everyday, in order to pass those actions along. This not only affects a child 's ethics but it also generates better behavior which affects the parents lives in a more positive way outside of the classroom. This module has taught me many different techniques when working with a misbehaved child. For instance, I plan to use self awareness in my classroom to keep a positive tone and eliminate poor body language. I will also use breathing methods for children as well as myself to establish a well-rounded classroom. Professionalism is such an important role in shaping our young child 's lives and it deserves to be stressed more which will in turn create a better learning
In this scenario, Margaret is a newly hired medical assistant for this very busy medical practice. Margaret had good intentions with wanting to leave a good impression. However, she should have thought more about patient care and her ability to perform a procedure on her own. Fortunately, even though the office seemed to need the extra help. Margaret being a new hire and having not much time with blood draws, or the way that the office is run. Should have consulted with one of the experienced staff members of RN’s, Medical assistants and seven providers. She should have also asked about their policy and the procedures that the practice uses.
One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.

As a preschool teacher, one should be reminded that selfish- behavior is very typical at this age (Omrod, 2014). When this behavior emerges in the classroom, one should encourage prosocial behavior. For example, encourage students to comfort each other when one is feeling sad or angry. Another important rule of thumb should is to make sure classroom standards should be made very clear at the beginning of the school year. These standards should be posted somewhere clearly for everyone to see. If a student misbehaves in class, revisit the standards and give reasons as to why their behavior is unacceptable, also focus on why and how their behavior caused harm or distress to other students or the teacher. Another way to encourage moral and prosocial behavior in the classroom is to model it. Children are more apt to exhibit moral and prosocial behavior when they see others behaving in such a way. Children are reacting to the authority of persons in their lives. The teacher acts in a firm but friendly manner to reinforce limits, raise conscious levels, and teach alternative behaviours. I have noticed a child in a childcare, showed mistaken behaviour as a result of dominant character. Despite her small size, she has rapidly become one of the leaders.
