As we close to the end of the nursing program, we excited to be able to work in the real world. However, the transition from school to the workplace is a big step. It doesn’t matter where we are going to work. We need to practice professionalism. But what is professionalism in the workplace? Professionalism is a broad and unclear term. According to Collier, professionalism is “in its essence, is an attitude whereby you assume a particular role,” (Collier, 2012). What is time management? It is the method to use them efficiently and knowing what needs to prioritize in making a decision. Also, Said stresses that “time management skills are essential for success in nursing.” (Said, 2014). Nurses have a ton of works every day to take care of patients, document patient’s chart, communicate with physician and coworkers, and dealing with the family members. Without an excellent time management skills, the nurses are not able to finish up for the shift and still have the positive attitude. On the other hand, no one like a nurse who keeps coming late for shift change and reports. The nurse from previous shift wants to go home too. There are many different things that nurse leaders should take in consideration in managing their time. Not only was it easy to demonstrate, but I hit the main concepts of professionalism which accountability, autonomy, and teamwork. While in my acute care clinical, I came dressed appropriately with all my supplies I needed for the day. I also was able to be a good representation of the nursing profession and DMACC by following the ADN student outcome's professionalism. This included me being accountable when I came to clinical. I kept fidelity when I would keep my promises of coming back to the patient when I said I would. I also made sure to get my mentoring nurse, when I was unsure how to do a skill a client was asking me to do. However, I maintained a sense of autonomy when I was able to answer the questions and preforming skills by myself. However, when I needed help from a peer or the working patient care technician (PCT), I did not hesitate to ask. I also did what I could to help my nurse and PCT with their work load depicting teamwork in professionalism. As it can be seen, I had no problem demonstrating professionalism in clinicals through following DMACC's ADN student outcome's professionalism. Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
Prioritization and Time Management in Nursing Nursing can be particularly difficult and demanding and during the busy times and shifts some nurses might rarely have sufficient time to sit down or eat. A lot of nurses have a lot of things that they have to accomplish and have to be aware of ways to ask quick questions when it comes to the well-being and care of their patients. It is because nursing is increasingly high-paced and demanding that it becomes significantly critical for nursing professionals to learn ways to manage their times at work efficiently in order to decrease their levels of stress and ensure that the care they deliver is of high quality (Patterson, Ebright & Saleem, 2011). Improving the capacity of nurses to manage their times is significant, especially because it makes them become more efficient nurses, nurses who will be able to address the needs of a large number of patients within a short period. This does not usually translate to sacrificing the quality of patient care and the bedside manners of nurses; only that they have to complete the fundamental care they need within a short period.
Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
Nurses should always understand the importance of image while delivering care to the public. Professionalism within nursing is very important since patients and families expect a certain level of care. It is often described that working in the nursing profession is chaotic (Ebright, 2010). However, no matter how chaotic it is, nurses have the responsibility of providing safe patient care. I could say that based from the scenario, the two concepts of complexity are time management and delegation. Nursing contains many aspects of professionalism. Appearance, responsibility, respect, and attitude are a few components that contribute to what makes a patient feel comfortable when dealing with nursing professionals. But, what about caring? Caring is also an important aspect of professionalism in the nursing field. If a patient does not feel a nurse or medical professional cares about them on an individual bases, they may not be willing to be as open and honest about what their ailments are. Which poses a problem; how can a nurse take “care” of a patient if he or she is not willing to divulge what is wrong?
