During this semester, I went to many different clinical sites for clinical experience, and I had the opportunity to with the nurse leader and observed what he/she does during a shift. This paper will focus on the strength of a nurse leader, and on my self-evaluation as a potential nurse leader.
Clinical Experience
The two common strengths that I saw in most nurses’ leader are good communication and time management. Communication is an important means by which people exchange messages. There are many different things that nurse leaders should take in consideration in managing their time. They should take time at the beginning of their shift for planning, establish priorities, make a “do” and “don’t do” list, reassess and reprioritize throughout their shift. Time management is important for nurse leaders because it allows them to resolve critical situations before they get worse. Good time management like effective communication improves quality of care, and bad time management may delay response to emergency situations and increase sentinel events (Marquis & Huston, …show more content…
It was a tough situation, the whole team was busy, and doctors from other floors came to take care of the seizing patient. Meanwhile, the rapid response team was on the floor, taking care of a physically aggressive patient. At the end of the shift, they were very thankful to me and said that I was helpful and handled the situation right. One concept of leadership that could have been useful in this situation is

Nursing leaders ' responsibility extends to become a voice for the nurses and for offering quality in patient care, not just at their organizations but spanning the whole communities, interacting with law makers in revising regulations and laws, with researchers and educators. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
A nurse manager plays an important role on a hospital unit. Evans defines the role of a nurse manager as one who makes sure all the needs required on a daily basis are accomplished (Evans, 2011). Evans goes on to say that one primary responsibility of a nurse manager acting in the position of a leader is to “raise the level of expectation and help employees reach their highest level of potential excellence” (Evans, 2011). With this said, it is important to identify potential barriers and problems that a nurse manager would face on a given unit and create or adopt evidence-based interventions to eliminate these problems. When this is accomplished, it will help to foster a work environment that maintains safety to patients as well as staff.
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
Hospital administrators will charge nurse leaders with ensuring that patient positive outcomes prevail while also controlling overhead. Nurse leaders are specially trained just for this task. Clinical Nurse Leaders are the experts that America’s patients will rely on to keep them safe and healthy in hospital settings.
A leader incorporates the capabilities to illustrate the attitude and performance in a way that have an immense impact on the fellow affiliates who work with him in the confined surroundings (Oliver, 2006). Considering the leader as an exceptional individual among the group, the two essential attributes that he should possess include (Dawson, 2003):
In healthcare profession, leadership is defined as utilization of personal characteristics and experiences to communicate effectively with the patients suffering critical health problems for which there are no specific answers and to direct health care team in developing policies to solve these problems. The nurse leader establishes relationships to encourage others to set and accomplish clinical or administrative goals. An effective leader provides guidance, use moralities to direct the process, and develop self-confidence in others (Yoder-Wise, 2010).
Nurse’s can demonstrate leadership by facilitating outstanding care to patients and it is related to how one’s values and behavior affect others. A leader is all about success and contribution and a successful leader sets his/her standards, goals and strategies high. One can become a leader by being assigned or emerging, but both will be working towards a common goal of good or bad. In leadership, positive attitude is the key to success and problems and challenges in the healthcare industry demand that nurses seek and fill the gap. Let me share one of my outstanding client care experiences while I was working as an RN in Italy in the hospitals medicine unit.
One of the challenges facing nurses today is learning how to be an effective leader. Assessing and analyzing the style of leadership the nurse possesses is the first step in facing the challenge. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and understand the characteristics of my style of leadership from an assessment performed by Gallup Strength Finders and DiSC and compare the strengths I have in common with Eleanor Roosevelt. For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide.
Marquis describes a leader as the motivation and the leading of the performance. Leader’s uniqueness and abilities are what make others to need to take after his or her way (2009 p.32). There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services.
