Nursing is a great career choice that can be very rewarding and has many benefits that come with the job. One downside to nursing is the scheduling because it runs on a shift system, it can lead to many problems. Nurses often have to work long hours, that can last sometimes more than twelve hours at a time. Working this long can lead to problems on the job, as well as health problems and trouble sleeping.
Many nurses have to work shifts that are way too long, and this can have severe effects on their ability to stay sharp while working. Some professions such as health care… require working at night. The author provides a brilliant summary of factors that affect the level of sleep experienced by patients in hospitals and the effects of sleep deprivation on the health and the wellbeing of these individuals. The article goes on to state that for sleep-deprived patients, there were bio-cognitive consequences for their health and recovery, with particular effects on immune functioning, inflammation, parasympathetic equilibrium, carbohydrate metabolism and cognitive performance.

How would you feel if you knew that the doctor inserting the stent in your heart was on the 24th hour of his shift? Understandably so, most likely worried. Thoughts going through your head would definitely include what would happen if this doctor fell asleep or inadvertently caused a severe injury as a result of drowsiness. Unfortunately, these are realities that all patients who are treated in teaching hospitals face. Medical residents often work unimaginably long shifts, sometimes exceeding 24 hours. Levels of fatigue by the end of these work periods have contributed to accidental injuries and deaths; it is no secret that humans make more errors when they are tired (Bates). Why not just limit shifts to a standard eight- or twelve-hour day? Continuity of care. This concept has caused physicians to widely believe that they are immune to the symptoms of fatigue. Only recently has the medical community begun to implement some work hour restrictions. While continuity of care is definitely important to patient safety and equally as important to teaching medical residents, the potential rewards do not justify the inevitable risks. Fatigue in medical residents is a serious issue and a cause of worry to patients worldwide.

Working in a fast-paced environment and being on their feet can really take a toll on a person. In addition they have to be prepared for anything to happen during their shift. A study of overworked and stressed nurses found that nurses are overworked suffered from physical sickness like type two diabetes (Stress and overworked 2006). For most nurses, their work week consists of more than sixty hours. Working that many hours can double their chances of sicknesses. When they compare the working week hours of nurses who worked the normal 21 to 40 hours with those that work more than 40 or 60 hours a week, they found that in comparison the ones who worked 40 hours or more a week increased the risk by almost 50 percent for type 2 diabetes (Stress and overwork 2006). If nurses were to work their normal work hours without mandatory overtime, then their health would improve.

Sleep deprivation is a commonplace occurrence in modern culture. Every day there seems to be twice as much work and half as much time to complete it in. This results in either extended periods of wakefulness or a decrease in sleep over an extended period of time. While some people may like to believe that they can train their bodies to not require as much sleep as they once did this belief is false (1). Sleep is needed to regenerate certain parts of the body, especially the brain, so that it may continue to function optimally. After periods of extended wakefulness or reduced sleep neurons may begin to malfunction, visibly effecting a person's behavior. Some organs, such as muscles, are able to regenerate even when a person is not sleeping so long as they are resting. This could involve lying awake but relaxed within a quite environment. Even though cognitive functions might not seem necessary in this scenario the brain, especially the cerebral cortex, is not able to rest but rather remains semi-alert in a state of "quiet readiness" (2). Certain stages of sleep are needed for the regeneration of neurons within the cerebral cortex while other stages of sleep seem to be used for forming new memories and generating new synaptic connections. The effects of sleep deprivation on behavior have been tested with relation to the presence of activity in different sections of the cerebral cortex.
One of the effects of sleep deprivation is impairment of cognitive performance[1,2,3]. Sleep deprivation interferes with the frontal lobes of the brain causing attention lapses and momentary absent-mindedness, resulting in decreased attention and attentiveness[1,2]. Findings confirmed that subjects performed worse on vigilance tasks that were long, simple and monotonous[1]. A possible explanation on why subjects were more error prone in repetitive tasks could be due to a decline in reaction time and accuracy as prolong wakefulness continued[3]. Another important finding was that lack of sleep disrupts subjects’ reasoning ability and creativity[1]. Although some research indicates that sleep deprivation of 45 hours or less is sufficient to cause these effects on cognitive performance, some researchers argue that wakefulness of 46 hours or less is too little to exhibit a significant effect[2]. Therefore, further work is required to establish this[1,2,3].
