Why Participation Trophies Shouldn’t Exist? Back when people were children, there were times when they would receive trophies for participating in an activity over receiving the trophy as a reward for accomplishment; The times when your team would win a trophy whether you won or lost. People believe these trophies should be won only by the team or person that rightfully won; other people believe these trophies should be won no matter what. In the two passages, “Participation Trophies Send a Dangerous Message,” by Betty Berden and “In Youth Sports, Participation Trophies Send a Dangerous Message,” by Parker Abate, there are claims made whether children should or should not win trophies for participating in an event. The original purpose of a trophy is to be a symbol of being victorious. In addition, Berden states that “If every soccer player receives a trophy for merely showing up to practice and playing in games, the truly exceptional players are slighted.” Therefore, making the skilled players who put their all into the game feel like they put effort into nothing, knowing that the opposite team is going to receive a trophy whether they win or lose no matter what. The same thing applies to the entire group too, it could potentially affect everyone’s motivation and efforts in the round knowing that the other team will still be getting a trophy, even if they win or lose. This could also lead to children believing that there is plenty of room on the winners’ podium, but Berden states the facts that “there’s only room for a select few on the winners’ podium.” There is only room for the real winners and not people who participated in the event. Children must understand that to win the award, they must work for it and rightfully win it instead of just
