I have learned a lot with what I have read from researching and even though some are just confirmation of what I believe, there are certain things that are new to me. All these years I had been selfish and shallow, and I didn't put anything else into consideration but myself, but this task opened my eyes that greater things are waiting and I am not the only one who's gonna work for it and benefit in the end.
My first article for this blog post is written by Aurora Harklute in "Why Kids Should Start Basketball at a Young Age," from Live Strong. She mentioned that, if you want children to be busy and if you to get rid of them out of your homes and let them go out, basketball is the key for that. There are certain people that would say that you wouldn't understand having kids someday, unless you have one. I totally disagree, for in my point of view, we were kids at one point in our life and if we didn't go through all that awkward stage, it's either we're immortal or we're not from this planet. Learning the basics of basketball is good because it is the fundamentals of the sport and if the ropes can't be taught to you, at one point or another it will be, whether it is liked or no.
My second article for this blog post is written by Judy Wang in "6 Health Benefits of Basketball for Children," from North Shore Pediatric Therapy, wherein the author discussed these 6 things briefly and properly. The six health benefits are, endurance, motor control, ankle stability, balance, coordination, agility and social skills. Each item was explain on how it is considered to health beneficial. These health benefits are really helpful without a doubt and I can attest to that
Stephen D. Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. Considering Ripley’s point about sports lowering academics, Keener argues, “These lessons directly translate into the classroom and beyond” (Keener). When I go to a gymnastics meet and do really good, so I get that 1st place medal or trophy. It feels amazing, I mean the sport gymnastics is competitive and I sure do love competitive sports. The competitiveness gets you that rush of excitement. You feel nervous, but excited to get in there and try your hardest. Kids make better choices and have committed when they have the drawbacks of participating in competitive youth sports.

Involving your child in sports is important part of growing up. There are several benefits to children playing sports. The child will learn how to make friends outside of school, church, and family. It will help develop self-esteem and physical skills. They discover what it means to be a member of a team, and how to win and lose with self-respect. Children also need to be active every day; exercise promotes growth and improves physical and emotional health. The Office of the Surgeon General states that active children are at less risk to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease as well as many cancers (Office of the Surgeon General, January 11, 2007).
Sports teach kids to learn many life lessons, lessons that will be important such as working in a team or working hard toward a goal. Parents are far too involved in youth sports. In our current time, kids have no independence in sports, everything is parent run, with the intentions of the parent trying to have their kids win and become elite superstars. Atkinson writes in an article that in his home town of Methuen Massachusetts he and all the other kids in his town used to organize all the sports, and parents would help cover the financial part, but the sport itself was directed by the kids, the way youth sports should be run, for the interest of the kids. Kids should determine what goes on; kids should be able to experiment with different sports in a non hostile environment in which they can fun. Having fun is most important in youth sports along with learning life lessons. Kids who enjoyed youth sports growing up were more likely to go onto play high school sports (Atkinson). Of course there are exceptions in which some kids will want to be pushed in a sport; however, it must have the child's desire to be pushed not the parents’(Hatter). Lastly, as important as sports are in society in the 21st century especially in the U.S. kids need to be able to have a life outside of sports. What could you do to prepare your kids for success in the future? Sports are one of the best ways to prepare kids for success in the future for many reasons. According to University of Missouri Health Care, “Sports require memorization, repetition, and learning - skill sets that are directly relevant to class work.”(muhealth). Not only do sports help them become better students, but they also prepare them both mentally and physically and teach them multiple life lessons that will better them in the long run. The great thing about sports is that anyone can participate as long as they have the passion for it.
John wooden a former player and later became a basketball coach once said. “A coach much never forget that he is a leader and not merely a person with authority.” Basketball has been something in our everyday lives for a while. To allot it something they just can't live without and others just choose to not even bother with it. I think that it is worth the time to look more into basketball. I remember the first time I played basketball when I was eleven years old. Seventh grade was an epiphany to me, I started trying different instruments, joined different clubs, and learned a bunch of other things about myself in the process. Uneducated, I didn’t know a single thing about what I was doing and ended up running around the court equivalent to a lost puppy. But as the season went on, I ended up having a few of the utmost exciting times of my life, and ended up trying out for the team again in eighth grade. Losing just about every game didn’t matter to us, us girls just kept laughing, smiling, and playing the whole time, despite the score on the board.

The hours of running and jumping can significantly shape up the calf and thigh area,” (Pantuhan 2011). Basketball is a very fast sport, so because of that, it increases you speed, flexibility, and agility. It increases your speed in different scenarios, for instance, when you want to score or steal the ball, you eventually become faster because you are used to the running and competition. Your flexibility increases due to the rebounding, dunking, layups, and stealing the ball. Lastly, your agility increases because of all the decisions you make on a quick move, which is a combination of your physical and mental well-being. However, basketball develops better coordination and motor skills, for instance, your hand-eye, full-body and finger degree, which is influenced by shooting and passing the ball. “Basketball provides an excellent full-body workout and can help develop useful, lean muscle. In this physically intensive contact sport, basketball players are highly reliant on effective body positioning and the ability to maintain that position when an opponent is pushing against him. Playing good defensive basketball can develop your deltoids, traps, neck, lower back and core muscles. Strong legs aid in shooting and running, while the finer movements such as dribbling and shooting are good for strengthening your arms, wrist flexors and hand muscles,” (Becic 2015). Physically basketball is one of the best physical activities you can do to” benefit your body,” says Predit (2014). On the surface, basketball has a number of impacts on young people. For instance, the boys and girls who participate in basketball learn certain positive character traits. There is evidence to suggest that because of participation, they have a better attendance in school, better grades associated with good behavior in school, and less trouble and rarer discipline issues. In addition, students also have better citizenship in school as well as the community, and an upward mobility orientation like joining college later on in life.

People use basketball as a go-to option to prevent them from doing illegal things. Basketball is a very good preoccupation when you have tons of extra time. It gives kids an opportunity to have a future rather than them to be out on the streets ruining their futures. Basketball helps people with leadership skills because considering it’s a competitive sport, the sport forces you to become a leader and get the entire team involved with the game.

When we are younger we have countless amounts of energy stored in our bodies and hardly run out of it. This is why sports can truly be beneficial for us, especially when we begin to participate in them at a young age. Although some people believe parents try to become coaches to their children on the field, children should still be pushed to compete in sports at an early age by their parents but to a certain extent. This is because sports will make them tough, know how to handle a win and a loss, and make them less likely to get into trouble.
Whether or not you yearn to play sports, recreational activities such as basketball or soccer have been entrenched in our society for centuries. Having been an essential part to the development of children in physical and psychological capabilities, we have no justified explanation to reduce sports to nothing more than a risky or dangerous nuisance. When playing, children will further mature their mental capabilities. Therefore, this will lead them to self-improve their communication, social skills, including their educational quality. Additionally, playing sports will also increase your chances of living a healthier life than others, preventing obesity, along with multiple heart problems.
