You’re not a “little kid” any more, now you’re one of the “big kids” at middle school. I really do not remember middle school that much but I can remember enough to talk about this topic. Middle school year was just as exciting as coming into high school. The first day was exciting because it was many many new new faces, new teachers and also new classmates. The first was very exciting like any other first day of any school year. Before middle school, most students only had about one or two teachers a day. In middle school I had I think four teachers a day it’s been so long since middle school I barely remember anything from that time. 6th grade came and my friends and I were split up, and some of my friends were in the same hall as me. I was put into what the students called “the dumb hallway”, some people weren’t as smart as the other kids in a different hallway but, let’s get back on track. Begin called a “dumb kid” started a little of my depression. I didn’t do my homework unless, it was important and I didn’t do my classwork at the best of my ability. It's quite difficult transitioning from being the biggest to back to being the smallest. In eighth grade, you've finally become comfortable with your peers, the school, and even the teachers, and it's gone in a matter of a couple months. My perception of high school was extremely terrifying because it was an academy where I didn't really know anyone because it was slightly far. It seems so easy when you already know someone at the school because they can help guide you around, but to a zoning that's a twenty minute distance it's difficult. I expected the least, honestly. I knew that the halls would be packed, getting to classes would be confusing, and teachers would continuously give homework, but no one said it would be so much more. Moving
Middle school was a amazing experience, for me anyway. I, myself have changed tremendously from the beginning of 6th grade to the end of 8th grade. Not just in appearance either, on the inside as well.
Looking back through my middle school and high school years, I see that I have matured a great amount. I see my current self as someone that treats others with respect, and who does not blurt out anything that comes to mind. I sadly cannot say that was always the case. Throughout high school, everyone changes at least a minimal amount, and sometimes you don’t even notice the changes. Maturity is something that happens naturally for most, and can happen in the matter of a summer break.
Young students today that are going through the middle school system are between the ages of 10 to 15 years old. They are going through a crucial stage of life in which many alterations occur such as emotional, physical, and mental changes. All of these changes that they must go through are essential to develop into healthy, fully functional, and self-actualized people. As a future educator, I need to see that middle school students are unique; they are too old to be considered children and too young to be considered adolescents. Middle level professionals have certain roles and responsibilities as it relates to the development of young adolescents. We must present ourselves as role models for the students and have the responsibility to make sure that as they progress through middle school they have enriched, meaningful learning experiences through challenging, exploratory, integrative, and relevant curriculum. As a future educator, I need to understand and recognize these changes, strengths, weaknesses, and diversities and be able to plan accordingly and appropriately for them in the classroom. I have developed my own philosophy for teaching at the middle level, based on this evidence and my understanding about the unique characteristics of middle level adolescents that will help mold me into a great middle school educator!
The novel Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, by James Patterson follows a troublemaker named Rafe Kachadorian. When he gets to school although for him it’s more like prison and so far he’s not very fond of his new school. Rafe only has one friend, Leo but his full name is Leonardo the Silent. Middle school was immensely difficult time for me. I had glasses and braces and in sixth and seventh grade went through an exceedingly at a maladroit stage. My comrades did an exceptional job of making those two years a living Tartarus. After almost one-hundred and eight days, the 2015-2016 school year is approaching an end. So far, I have concluded that middle school is basically like building a house. Before middle school has started, in fifth grade, the house only has the boards and the main skeleton of the whole structure. When I was five years old, the word recess was one of my favorite words. Recess automatically meant the best part of day to me, it was time to go outside and play. Recess meant we were going to be let free and have take some time to cooldown our minds from learning. I remember in the later grades of elementary school if we didn't have recess our days we ruined. In 5th grade our teacher always told us that we wouldn’t get recess in middle school, but we would never listen. Recess was my favorite word when I five years old!
The passion I have chosen to do my project on is music because I feel that I am most passionate about band. I also believe that not enough people play a musical instrument. In my project, I will start an instrument drive and collect instruments from people that do not use them. Then, I will give the instruments to schools that do not have a big music program. Young adolescents can be described as ages 10-15 years old, but it is also considered that adolescence continues until the age of 25. During this time in an adolescent’s life there are many internal and external factors that affect the development of each individual. The influence that an adolescent’s peers, parents, and community have on them can be conflicting and therefore cause stress. Trying to meet the expectations of others during a time where one is going through so many forms of physical, psychological, and cognitive development can be trying for a middle school aged student. They are expected to focus on their education and the expectation of other outside influences while their bodies are growing and developing into an adult body. When development happens differently for these kids it can affect their psychological development if they focus too much on how fast, or slow they are developing in comparison to their peers. Some adolescents may let their peers influence their behaviors creating a problem with how they interact with others, or how they view themselves as a person. The middle school is a place where students are guided through these developmental experiences with the help of their peers, teachers, administrators, parents and community.
A few weeks later when I got home on the last day of school I saw my dad putting up a for sale sign, I asked him why this was necessary and then he ruined my day by breaking the news to me, that unfortunately we were gonna move. Our house sold in a matter of 48 hours. We were all moved in and everything in a matter of 2 weeks. I was entering middle school with no friends to talk to on the first day of school so I was pretty scared. Surprisingly I made friends fairly easy because I joined the nearest soccer club, so I made friends there and they introduced me to other kids and so on. Little did I know that my “friends” just talked to me to make fun of me behind my back. I was bullied until 7th grade, I was insulted about my race and weight. Over the years school has become a very hated place for students. Many say it is because the classes are boring, others may tell you that it is because they have to wake up early for the sole purpose of going to school. The only way to make students like school once again is to make it fun, and how would we do that one might ask. Well, it’s quit simple really, build a school arcade. An arcade will let school earn much needed money that can go to many different school related events or activities. It will make school fun for students since that is what arcades are designed for, fun. Finally an arcade will increase productivity in the school; students will go there instead of, for example, vandalize.
