What has been your experience and major contribution(s) in improving race relations with groups other than your own within your school or community and why is diversity and inclusion important to you?
I am often the only black person in the classes I attend, so I try to act in a manner that helps portray African Americans in a positive light. Although I haven’t lead any big race relations rallies or made clubs for equality, I act in a manner that shows that people of different races can get along. I try to be respectful of people from different backgrounds. I make a point of learning about different backgrounds. Whenever I see a chance to correct ignorance, I do. I strongly believe in making sure all humans can get along.
The world is full of different cultures, many of which are found in America. I try to lead my life keeping in mind that not everyone has had the same background as me. I do not try to impose my beliefs over someone else's, especially if their beliefs stem from a national or religious thought system. I go about my life trying to respect other people's culture, and I

I am taking a cultural studies in my current school because I believe other cultures outside my own are worth learning. In my cultural studies class I have learnt about a lot of world cultures. I learnt about the many asian, hispanic, jewish, Appalachian, and middle eastern cultures. I have made friends with many people from all over the world. I have learnt firsthand about the italians fondness of swearwords. I have heard about the beauty of the indonesian landscape. I have tasted india’s lesser known delicacies and compared how the India’s and Nigeria's educational systems are similar. I listened to an middle eastern muslim talk about how proud she is of her custom despite all the negativity she faces. Her experiences are one of the main reasons I try to inform
“In addition to giving special attention to the history and current situation of their own nation, [children should] learn a good deal more than they frequently do about the rest of the world in which they live” (6). In this method of education, students will be creating bonds with characteristics of cultures that they personally find good and worthy of upholding. Just because other perspectives are incorporated in the classroom, this doesn’t mean that everyone will become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures. When multicultural practices have rigorous standards, allow the advancement of social communications with other cultures, and allow the advancement social justice concepts both inside and outside of the classroom, this is when students will become more appreciative of other cultures (Ladson-Billings, 1995, p.162).
One’s culture somewhat affects the way one views others and the world. It is up to the person whether they want to view things with an open new mind or from one’s cultural perspective. A few examples of how culture somewhat affects someone’s view of others and the world can be found in Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri and in “By Any Other Name” in the book Springboard. It depends on what one’s viewpoints are on other cultures and traditions. If someone thinks that their culture is better than any other, then they might approach the world differently than how a someone that is open to new ideas and is willing to make a change.
Now that it’s been concluded that racial equality has not been reached the question must be asked of what steps society should take to fight for it. Recently violent race riots have broken out all over cities in America, like the one in Charlottesville, Virginia. White supremacists and anti-racist protesters broke out into fist fights. These riots are exactly what Martin Luther King Jr advocated against. He believed that the solution to improving race relations was to love and respect all people not fight them in the streets.

Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
Diversity, in my perspective, not only means the variety of individuals regarding their race, but also their interests and ideas. Diversity can focus on multiple different things, but the main point is that there is variety. Diversity is very important to me and I consider myself to be a diverse individual. I was born in Ohio, but my parents were born in Puerto Rico. I grew up surrounded by a multitude of different races. I attended a school where there were a considerable amount of African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian students. I myself am a Hispanic female who has taken joy in delving into Asian entertainment and culture since a young age. I watch anime and listen to Japanese music. I watch Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese
That is a major problem to me, and as president I continuously work to change that, along with the disciplinary rates of African Americans at my school. Even so, I have to take into account the fact that I am president to all, not just a specific minority. While this may seem stressful to some, through this position I am able to bring about social reform. By encouraging others to educate themselves, the seeds of greatness are being planted in my small town. That for a long time has been the problem in the city of Lake Wales; few become successful, and none invest in others. In class we have discussed that it is the teacher’s responsibility to change the structure, practices, and climate of the school and teachers must have the ability to meet any kind of needs of students of different cultures. In class we have also discussed the five basic skills that are necessary for cross- cultural teaching. These five basic skills include awareness and acceptance of differences, self- awareness, dynamics of difference, knowledge of a student’s culture, and adaptation of skills. I believe that it is important to understand a student’s culture and it is important to have knowledge about different culture based on the culture’s beliefs, values, and practices. I have experienced before a teacher who did not understand the students’ cultures. The student got in trouble for talking in class and the teacher told the student that she needed to talk to him after class. When the teacher talked to the student after class, the student kept on looking down at the floor while the teacher was trying to talk to him. The teacher got mad at the student because she thought the student was being disrespectful and was doing this on purpose; however the main reason why the student was looking down at the floor was because his culture believes that

Looking back, as I began our readings, my initial thoughts were “I’ve been through inclusion and diversity sensitivity training and we’re doing all the right things at Sherwin-Williams; I’ll be able to teach a few things about inclusion”. I was so wrong! As I reflect back over our readings and discussions, I am more apt to say that my own discoveries were tearing down walls of presumptions of what inclusion, change, and diversity mean in the workplace. For me, in many ways, the process of experiencing a deeper attention to inclusion and change has actually been both a destructive process, as well as a constructive one. As the semester has come down to an end, I have realized how much I have grown. This class is designed to teach students on how to become culturally aware. In class, we have read many articles that are supposed to help us learn about different cultures. Personally, I found some of the articles offensive. For example, the article about cultural competency made me feel shameful that I was Caucasian. The article made it out to seem that my race made me culturally unaware. When in fact, I am more culturally aware than I have ever been. Despite reading this hurtful article, I did enjoy reading the case studies. Actually, I learned a lot from the case studies. When people intersect with life itself, the experience a form of culture. Depending on how they deal with it or express their feeling towards it, culture plays a part in it. We live in a fast pace world and we do not always understand what it means to step into someone else’s shoes. Cultures are not exclusive, however it is not something a person just automatically joins.
