Growing up, my parents raised me on values of integrity, charity and ambition. When I was born, my family had lived a one-bedroom apartment with five people. We were never wealthy, but my parents tried their hardest to support me and my siblings and make sure we were raised as respectful, intelligent people who would give back to the world. I was taught to never take the easy way out and encouraged myself to work hard so I could support myself and my family one day. I learned to reflect this in my work, making sure I reach my full potential. But furthering my education isn’t just about being successful; it’s also about being involved and learning about responsibility. One of the most influential experiences that has helped me grow and build character is Youth and Government, a mock legislative session run entirely by youth at the Connecticut State Capitol. I always struggled with public speaking and didn’t want to have to defend my opinion in front of strangers. But as soon as debate began, I was immediately fascinated by the other delegates. They were so passionate about the bills they created and took strong stands when they supported another delegates’ bills or thoughts. I realized this was a program that could help me grow and I wanted to get involved. During my second year in the program, I decided to run for the officer position of Secretary of State. Although I didn’t win, this didn't discourage me. My third year, I was a senator, co-chair, and a party leader. On top of that, I decided to once again run for Secretary of State. I didn’t want my past loss to define my participation in this program and knew that if I tried harder, it would be possible. During the conference I reached out to so many delegates and made sure my name was known. And by the end of the conference I was elected position of Secretary of
