Growing up, my parents raised me on values of integrity, charity and ambition. When I was born, my family had lived a one-bedroom apartment with five people. We were never wealthy, but my parents tried their hardest to support me and my siblings and make sure we were raised as respectful, intelligent people who would give back to the world. I was taught to never take the easy way out and encouraged myself to work hard so I could support myself and my family one day. I learned to reflect this in my work, making sure I reach my full potential. But furthering my education isn’t just about being successful; it’s also about being involved and learning about responsibility. One of the most influential experiences that has helped me grow and build character is Youth and Government, a mock legislative session run entirely by youth at the Connecticut State Capitol. This program allows students to create bills for proposed …show more content…
I always struggled with public speaking and didn’t want to have to defend my opinion in front of strangers. But as soon as debate began, I was immediately fascinated by the other delegates. They were so passionate about the bills they created and took strong stands when they supported another delegates’ bills or thoughts. I realized this was a program that could help me grow and I wanted to get involved. During my second year in the program, I decided to run for the officer position of Secretary of State. Although I didn’t win, this didn't discourage me. My third year, I was a senator, co-chair, and a party leader. On top of that, I decided to once again run for Secretary of State. I didn’t want my past loss to define my participation in this program and knew that if I tried harder, it would be possible. During the conference I reached out to so many delegates and made sure my name was known. And by the end of the conference I was elected position of Secretary of
I, Hope Turnbull, am a Senior of Stockton High School in Stockton Kansas. My plans consist of attending North Central Kansas Technical College starting Fall 2016, where I want to begin my study of nursing. Due to me having all of my general education courses finished upon my college arrival, I have been accepted into the first year Nursing Program (LPN). I believe that I deserve this scholarship due to me excelling in my education at a very young age. My grades are earned as A’s and B’s in school.
Respect is important; however the most influential values I learned were kindness and the power of knowledge. As a kid, I was taught to work hard and have fun later; we were not allowed to leave the house to party or go out unless we had all our homework done. This meant learning to think critically and efficiently in order to do great work in a small amount of time. My parents dropped out of college so that they could give my sisters and I opportunities they didn't have, for this reason I have learned the value of har...
As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime.
I am also very imaginative, I can create many ideas that will indefinitely benefit Congress. I've already spoken to the SoTH about some of the things he likes which could be implemented if I’m selected. Previous experiences and
As a child I did not know a lot about college. None of the adults in my life had been to College, my family did not talk about it, and it seemed like a distant land that I heard about only in movies and on Television. I was first introduced to college when my third grade class took a field trip to Iowa State University, clearly a much needed field trip considering my lack of exposure to higher education. I was immediately amazed by the grand architecture and massive buildings. I had never seen anything like a University campus before. The few things that I remember about the trip were that everything was big, the college students played with us, and we got to swim in the pool. While the larger purpose of the field trip may have been lost to my childhood excitement of getting to swim in a big pool, the field trip did mark the beginning of my knowledge of higher education and from then on I always viewed it as something that I would be a part of eventually, even if it did seem like a very distant future at age eight. As I grew older I developed other reasons for wanting to attend colle...
As young people’s civic and political participation continues to decline, a number of organizations are working to reverse the decline by increasing opportunities for youth to participate. Communities around the country are taking steps to engage young people through a variety of methods that allow youth to actually participate in policy development and take action on local issues. The effectiveness of such community programs on long-term civic engagement is not well documented, however. This paper presents preliminary research about the effectiveness of one community participation program, the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Youth Advisory Council. Quantitative and anecdotal evidence, while not conclusive, suggest this community problem solving approach may encourage its participants to engage in other civic and political activities. The paper also discusses the benefits that organizations and communities receive when young people participate in this way, and provides recommendations for developing a similar youth participation program.
My freshman election led to four years of involvement with student government, culminating in my election as Student Body President. Student government opened numerous opportunities to me; I was able to join my county’s Student Congress, connect with high level county administrators, and find solutions to my school’s problems. Although I did not realize it when I ran for freshman secretary, my early involvement with student government also means I am more likely to run for elected office in the
One of the most important values that still hold true to me is the act of protecting family members. As a young child, I was brought up in the lower-middle-class lifestyle, practically barely touching the breaking point between lower-class and middle-class. The family is all we had to keep us loving life and making us live our lives to the fullest. Without my family, I do not know where I would have ended up today. My parents did everything that they could to make my brother, and I understand the importance of family and how powerful a loving family that looks out for each other has on the outcome of our everyday actions. Every time my brother and I experienced something negative involving our friends and or girlfriends, they always ended the conversation with “well no matter what happens with the outcome of this situation, just remember that your family members will always be with you until the end”. I never fully understood what my parents meant until the loss of my uncle when I was just a

I have to work hard for the things that I want. My parents have lead by example with this message. They are such hard workers. With dedication they have been able to provide a life for their children far better than the ones they lived. My dad especially has had a hard life and thinking of what they have struggled for makes me want to also better myself.
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
On the first day of my Freshman year I walked into debate class and saw the desks in a format that I had never seen before. The desks were separated into two groups and set facing each other. This symbolized the opposing viewpoints of debate and inspired my will to compete to be better than my opponents. Throughout the semester I overcame my fear of public speaking by learning out to construct an argument, give speeches, and refute others.
I quickly learned at a very young age the value of hard work. Both of my parents had worked hard to achieve their dreams of a nice home, cars, and financial stability. Their working hard not only paid off financially, but they taught my two brothers and I, that working hard was imperative to life. I was given a set of chores and an allowance every week, which taught me responsibility and how to manage money. I also realized that cooperation goes hand in hand with hard work. My brothers and I would help each other with our chores from time to time. I did not know that cooperation works on a larger scale in the workplace, that sometimes one needs help to achieve their ultimate goal.
I am so proud to know my children value others and are ethical people. I know they will also raise their children the same way. I believe if you treat people with respect and dignity, that this can carry you a long way in life and business. My Father is a well-respected man in his community. There has been a lot of business tossed my way simply because of who my dad is as a dignified and respected man.
The first value my family taught me at a young age was to act with integrity. This value made me think before I acted and also to be honest with everybody I know. My nana is the one who taught me the value of having integrity which has lead me to understand how to treat others with respect.
