After a period of self-reflection and deep thought, I have concluded a multitude of reasons why I wish to enroll in the Army ROTC Program. The main reason I am interested in enrolling is the service and commitment I can perform to the nation and to others. As a leader in my community, committing yourself for others is the most important factor of leadership. Although there is the option to enlist, I feel that training and learning to become an officer would be a more effective path. Currently, I hold many leadership positions and strive for academic success. Therefore, it would be beneficial for someone of my aptitude to make the investment to become an officer in the United States Army. I also have desire to enroll in the Army ROTC
The United States Army has been a leader in military prowess on the world stage since its inception in 1775, and with such a record, it is reasonably assumed that there must be solid foundation within the organization working to maintain the high level of performance. The Noncommissioned Officer Corps is one institution within the Army that serves as a large portion of this foundation that makes it the fighting force that it has always been, and the noncommissioned officers have been an integral piece since the very inception of the Army. The Prussian General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, organizer of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps, encapsulated this idea when he coined the noncommissioned officer (NCO) as the backbone of the Army. (Arms, 1991) In an Army that is continuously adjusting to world around it while maintaining its status as the military leader to all other nations, the Noncommissioned Officer Corps has always provided the platform for continuity through a growing rank system based on its original core, an evolving training program to develop effective leaders, and a creed that moves us forward while remembering the rich history of the corps that came before us.
I want to join Year Up because of the opportunity it provides to receive an education and experience in a professional computer-programming environment that I might not have received otherwise. I believe I am a good candidate for Year Up because of my ability to perform in professional and academic environments alike, as well as a strong desire to succeed in a highly technical field.
As a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, preparing myself and rising to the challenge of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club induction sets the right example for my fellow NCO’s, especially the junior NCO’s that look at me as a Leader they aspire to be. Whether it is the NCO’s at my current station or NCO’s from my past Leadership positions, I always endeavor to set a positive example for them to keep moving forward and progressing in their careers. The NJROTC, or Naval Junior Recruit Officer Training Corpse, is built not only to teach high school students about the navy but also allows student to become our great leaders of the future. In NJROTC cadets are asked to live up to very high standards because those students in NJROTC are thought of as the best of the best and are at that school to represent the military way of life. In this program I have learned three traits that will help me better myself not only in the future but in the day I live today. These traits that I speak of are discipline, punctuality, and respect. If not for NJROTC I would have not been as great a person and would have little or no direction in my life.
Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, also known as JROTC, is a government program supported by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and in some middle schools. JROTC makes the students of high school and middle school understand the advantages of citizenship. In addition, it prepares high school understudies for responsible leadership roles. The mission of JROTC is “To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens”. A few of the outcomes are capable cadets who are certain of themselves, can think all alone, and can express their thoughts and sentiments unmistakably and briefly. JROTC can prepare students for post-high school success.
Most or all of my reasons for joining the Marines are as follows. Ideal- The Marines Embody more of my personal views and ideals then the other branches of the armed services. Loyalty, I respect and love the idea of loyalty to a person or persons...or a cause. To be totally loyal to something without question but to also love and honor that something, that idea is something I long for and adore.
My initial reason to enter the Air Force was a great way to pay for college which turned into a call of duty and a service commitment which has actively allowed me to contribute to the Air Force mission. Thus far I have led a joint force search and rescue effort and a multinational exercise to preserve freedom. As an F-15E instructor WSO and combat mission ready WSO I actively contribute to ensure our freedoms are preserved and the attacks of September 11, 2001 will never happen again.
As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed writing by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend a NCO’s school. For most of us this is what our creed has become because we learn to narrate or recite. The military from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard has an overabundance of NCOs who fall under their pay grade of E-5, E-6 and etc. Yet somehow there still not enough leaders. I believe that the largest problem afflicting the military today is our lack of competent leaders, ineffective leader development, and how we influence our subordinates under us who are becoming leaders.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps mission is to educate, train, and commission college students to become the future officer leadership of the united States Army. Army ROTC is both rewarding and challenging, the program focuses on instilling values and leadership skills both in classroom and practice. While these skills are being developed the students are learning more about themselves and pushing themselves to become better-rounded individuals and leaders in their future as officers.
I have asked myself, “Why do I want to be a military officer?” I want to be a military officer so I can be a role model to all Soldiers and civilians. To be an expert in a field of study, so that Soldiers approach me for advice and be a leader to look up to. An officer that knows right from wrong, willing to put the needs of their Soldiers before my own. Lead, mentor, and form young Soldiers to know what it is to be an American Soldier. To keep the traditions of being a military officer as it moves forward in our generation. This is why I want to be an officer in today’s military.
A huge problem is, a lot of people can not afford food, health care products, and necessities. As I became older I became more aware. I had to do community service, so I started to volunteer at the VFW. Going started out by force, but as I kept volunteering, I started to enjoy it. It has been three years now, and I love going and helping every other monday night.
What if I could go back in time and sit down with my teenage self? The conversation would seem longwinded, and I would probably want to tell me ‘okay’, just so I would shut up. If I could shake that spaced out kid, with his head in the clouds and yell into his face, ‘Listen, it doesn’t have to be difficult! Things can be so much easier if you pay a little more attention.’ Looking back as I went through high school my priorities changed, from music and friends to wanting to join the military. The decision to join the military changed my life and molded the person that I am today. I had it all figured out back then. My plan, my approach, and my dreams were in front of me.
To this country, our veterans mean a lot. Veterans are loyal, they’ve stood by this country in hard times, and they’ve never stopped believing in freedom. They are strong, they stood up for this country in the times that we needed them the most, and if we need them again, they’ll be there. Our veterans are heroes, they’ve saved this country, and kept it under safeguard. Some are old, and some are young.
After World War I, the American military adapted doctrine to focus on newer technology like airplanes and move away from obsolete tactics such as cavalry charges. After the Vietnam War, the military focused on transitioning to an all-volunteer force and rebuilding the Profession of Arms. As the current conflicts wind down, the military must now take time to assess weaknesses like the deterioration of the civil-military relationship. This deterioration is exemplified by a growing disconnect between the American people and its service members, a lack of constructive civilian involvement in the decisions to go to war, and a lack of accountability of the military. The implementation of the all-volunteer force created gaps between service members and civilians.
