A huge problem is, a lot of people can not afford food, health care products, and necessities. As I became older I became more aware. I had to do community service, so I started to volunteer at the VFW. Going started out by force, but as I kept volunteering, I started to enjoy it. It has been three years now, and I love going and helping every other monday night. At the VFW is where great memories were created and are being created. Watching people smile, thanking you, and appreciate your volunteering, is the world's best feeling. The VFW is not just people I volunteer for, they are my family, they are people who can make me laugh and bring the best of me out. When I first volunteered at the pantry I was just a young boy. I chose to volunteer my time to the food pantry because they are my church and I always wanted to be able to help people in need. Ending hunger, not only in our community, but in America is important to me. The thought of a child without a meal is truly heartbreaking. I couldn’t imagine being in need of food and shelter. We all know this world has had many wars, whether it’d be with another country or a civil war. We know since the beginning of time we’ve always struggled to survive to protect our lands. The United States broke away from the Crown in the Revolutionary war, won over southern states from Mexico, recovered from a brutal civil war, and saved the world from collapsing through two world wars. The US had some rough spots with war also, but the men and women who go to battle for us are all brave souls. The first in to the battle from the Revolutionary War to now, have been the Marines. You have heard of the saying “Semper Fidelis.” Well that stands for “always faithful”, another unofficial motto is “first to fight”. The motto of the Marines has been “Semper Fi” for almost three hundred years. They never back down and never give up. Marines will stare death in the face and won’t back down. They will head to battle with their brothers and sisters knowing that someone has their back as they have someone else’s. That sounds like a life style that I’d want to live.
This pillar is one of my favorites because to me it is usually enjoyable, and I always come back with a new idea or perspective. Over time I have volunteered at several different places such as the Downtown Rescue Mission, Legacy Elementary, my church, Sparkman, 305 8th street, and some others. One of my favorites was 305 8th street, which is a home for adults with special needs. I went with First Priority last spring to deliver Easter baskets. The people were so incredibly happy and thankful to see us and they just wanted to talk to us all they could. This experience taught me just how much talking to someone or meeting someone new can brighten their day. Throughout the past two years, Harvest Youth Club has been one place where I have volunteered consistently. I look forward to seeing the kids each week, and I have grown closer and more comfortable with so many of them. Imagine all the events that occurred in your life today. You woke up from your warm bed, took a shower, got dressed, went to either school, work, or both. Then you came home, had dinner, and went to sleep. These are all basic needs, basic needs that many people in the United States today don't have. Most people would agree that a day like this is fairly ordinary. Shelter, clothes, food, education, and family are all things that we usually take for granted and things that every person deserves. Unfortunately, these things do not belong to everyone. Far too many people in this country have no home. They own only the clothes that they wear. They don't know where their next meal will come from and they don't have family or friends to turn to for help.
I have participated in several volunteer opportunities as a Girl Scout, singing Christmas carols at a local hospital, picking up trash along the beach, working at a homeless shelter, leading events for younger Girl Scouts and much more. Loyalty, I respect and love the idea of loyalty to a person or persons...or a cause. For me as an individual student, I should gain more knowledge in the area of the issues and communicate with others who are in the field of social justice. Volunteering in nationally social protection systems or nonprofit organizations can be my first step to impact the issue. Even though my abilities are very limited in the society, I still can help different people around the world by my own hands. With more education in the area of social welfare, I can even raise awareness of why ending the poverty is important to everyone around the world. Some have served in WWII and some are serving in Iraq. Our veterans have sacrificed their time, and risk their lives, for what? This country, the country that shelters us, the country that guards us. They love this land that we call home. Veterans are special because of the love they give to their family, friends, and this nation.
People just need to be more trusting and have faith in people. A great example would be the movie “the Blind Side” that is a truly beautiful story about a young African American boy that is homeless being taken in by a family, but others judge them for it. This story in particular is very special in my heart because I have grown up with kids that do not have anything and that come from nothing. In our surrounding area I have seen a lot of pregnant homeless women that do not have the finical stability to even see or visit an OBGYN for their unborn child. We all have the opportunity to change someone life. For starters we could help homeless men and women get the correct attire for potential job opportunities. Also we could take the time to help them find a job that fits their needs just right, and maybe even help them attend job fairs. We could also take the time to help homeless me and women with drug and alcohol addiction put them in facility so maybe one day they can be rejoined with their loved ones. They are many societal problems in the world but the societal problem I would’ve to choose would be homelessness. The reason why I choose homelessness its because they are lot of people in the world that doesn't have a home to go to at night. Driving around and seeing people with a signs breaks my heart. Some of them are sick and cant afford to get checked out or get the medical they need. I feel like with your help with the money would so help many people off the street.
Volunteering is one of the most patriotic acts a person could do. The world today has put volunteering and helping others on standby while they go chase other types of happiness. After a long day of volunteering one’s feet will probably hurt , one will be sleepy , and most of all hungry. Every day after volunteering I would go home and take a nice warm shower and reflect on my experiences that day. Volunteering will teach an individual many of life’s greatest lessons, and lets an individual grow into a better person. Volunteering teaches to let go of their ignorance and false notions of world problems and lets the volunteer learn about the real, and sometimes unattractive, condition of people in the world. Many people think that one person cannot make a difference in the world, but volunteering teaches a person to at least try to make a difference in one person’s life and to build on that. Additionally, volunteering teaches a person to be leader who can inspire others to volunteer. Volunteering is an incredibly didactic experience that will forever inspire the volunteer to be a better person.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
