I have always been interested in working with children. Becoming a teacher has always been a potential career path for me; however, I recently discovered the position of a child life specialist which has further broadened my interest for a future career. Although they are not educators in school, they are extremely important since they are the educators for children and their families to help overcome difficult and/or challenging life events. As a child life specialist I will be teaching children and families in hospitals how to cope with their diagnoses, how a surgery day will go, how certain lifestyles will have to change, and much more. When it comes to educating children and parents about their child’s surgery or illness, it is important to remember the child’s age. A child and parent do not understand the same terms. For example, when referring to a stretcher a child may think it will stretch them out, a child life specialist may refer to a stretcher as a bed on wheels for children who may not understand this term. There are many child life specialists who go through every detail in an office with …show more content…
Many individuals, teachers or not, only do what they are asked or expected to do. However, going above and beyond and being able to have greater influence on a child’s life is my goal. I know I will love my job and in this position, children and families will be going through difficult and not normative life events. It is essential to extend further assistance to make each individual feel important. Being someone who can help families understand and make their lives a little bit easier by providing support and encouraging optimal development, I can hopefully make a meaningful impact on a child and/or family. The child and family satisfaction would bring happiness in itself and be worth more than
The following career I have chosen describes who I am, where I want to go, and what I want to accomplish in the near future.
A child growth and developmental levels affect how you create patient-centered care in hospitals. A toddler’s developmental level allows them to perform simple motor activities such as dressing and feeding themselves. More complicated activities are developed later in life. Further, toddler’s mind has not yet fully expanded to understand certain concepts and therefore require more assistance and guidance by their caregivers. This affects a specific patient’s plan of care because you do not want to try to have them do tasks or abilities outside
Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
One important detail of my future I would share with myself is about all the different hospitalizations I had. During these hospitalizations for surgery, I had met a Child Life specialist. I would explain that a Child Life specialist is a person who works with pediatric patients to help them understand what is going on around them in the hospital. When explaining to myself about the duties of a child life specialist, they use different treatment methods such as, therapeutic play, talking to the child and family about a procedure, distraction during medical procedures, and medical education. I would remind myself that the staff at Mayo, Clinic has done those things with you, and it really helps you get through a rough time and not be so scared or anxious next time. I would explain that a Child Life specialist works with children to help with the emotional part of the hospital stay. While explaining my career choice, I would show myself that a child life specialist is educated in the field of Child Development to help a wide range of children, teens, and young
The teacher builds relationships with parents by getting them to understand the areas that their child struggles and continues to strive in. Making sure they know that their child will master these skills when they are ready (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 2). At Staples Child Care Center, all teacher will assessments and observations about the child and a few suggestions that the child will benefit
A family centred care model- FCC should be used in all hospitals as it deliveries a quality of health care that is important for the wellness of a child and adolescent (“The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne”b). Some aspects of FCC include communication, dignity/ respect, collaboration and participation (“The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne”b). Preparing for a child to have surgery is also preparing the child’s family. Support must be made based on age, developmental stage, personality and have regards to any history of hospitals or with health care professionals (Nettina, 2013). The family and patient may have a lot of questions and fears about the procedure and it can be very distressing for all (Nettina, 2013). Therefore, it is important to acknowledge these concerns and explore and provide feedback for the patient and family in regards to their feelings, fears, and to give them the information that they need (Nettina, 2013). This also builds up the therapeutic relationship and creates a trusting environment (Fraser & Grant & Mannix, 2016) in which the child’s wellbeing is priority, but the family is just as important as the health care professionals in making sure the patient becomes well again. An important aspect is making sure Anne is understanding of the procedure and what it entails. She is at a developmental stage where she can think logically and abstractly and so would be able to understand that she is sick and needs to have surgery to help her get better. Building a therapeutic relationship (Fraser & Grant & Mannix, 2016) with the patient and her family and respecting their autonomy (Shaul, 2014) is vital to their
If I can have an impact on one child’s life, then I feel that I have fulfilled my duties as a teacher. One of the major influences that pushed me towards a career in teaching is that that I will impact a child’s life in more than one way. As a student’s teacher you are their role model and I feel that I will make a very acceptable role model to most if not all of my students. I have talked to my past teachers about the “role model” topic. Most people find it odd that I do not want to teach higher grades; such as a high school class for instance, just because of the fact that not many males want to teach in the early elementary grades. I feel that as a teacher I will be a father figure to the boys and girls in the classroom that are from single mother...
When I have progressed, I hope to go into nurse practitioning or nursing administration to better the quality of nursing jobs and patient care. Nursing degrees can be a completely diverse education that can be taken in many different directions. From several different kinds of nursing fields such as pediatrics, critical care, emergency room, ICU, neurology and several others to nursing administration such as a QA Coordinator, hospital administrator or quality management director. There are several different fields to appeal to all different types of interests. The difficult part is figuring which one to choose and of course training and learning how to take these lives into their hands. I love children so pediatric nursing is the way I personally would like to go. Although this will come with it’s own sense of challenges like tiny veins, having to cause some pain in order to make them feel better and since the field focuses on children, I may have to deal with the death of a child. Though the personal satisfaction of helping to save a life and make a true difference far outweighs the different challenges I may face along the
I became particularly drawn to pediatrics after shadowing several pediatric doctors of the PICUs and NICUs. The patients I encountered were always joyful and kept a positive outlook even in their declining health. However sometimes a high emotional capacity was necessary for working in a setting such as the PICUs or NICUs. The physicians I shadowed were attentive to the concerns of their patient. In addition, they showcased the ability to extend empathy to both the patient as well as the family of the patient. One thing that became clear was the financial and emotional toll that a devastating illness has on a family. I could relate to the feelings of grief and anxiousness felt by family members of the patients since my father had also been hospitalized several times, often for several weeks at a time. Nevertheless, I enjoyed working with new families and individuals, even in their difficult time. I was inspired by the patients and sought to help them out in any way possible. Through my shadowing experiences and volunteering in a clinical setting, I have come to realize by serving as a pediatric doctor I would be able to empower children I provide care for by helping them to attain a sound body and
Unfortunately, some children are without steady home lives. Children that do not have a substantial home life yearn for solid ground. I would like to be the teacher that is a role model for inopportune children. I want to be able to provide the firm, safe background that those students aren’t able to have. I want to be a teacher so I can make a difference in children’s lives.
Teaching is a complex occupation that requires as much empathy and emotion as it does educational skill. I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, and realized after having my own children, that I would not truly be fulfilling my purpose in life if I did not pursue this dream. As a volunteer at the elementary school in my community, I loved the environment and took tremendous joy in watching the children learn. I felt that I had the ability, along with the dedication and desire, it would take to become a full time educator. To achieve this goal I will strive to give my students a positive beginning, provide confidence in their individual abilities, and prepare them for different aspects in life.
Ever since I was a little kid joining the health profession has been one of my dreams. Helping other people in any way I can is something that brings me an unspeakable amount of joy. Pursuing a career in the medical field will give me the opportunity to do something I enjoy, which is help others. I am currently not certain what specific career I want to pursue, but I have thought about focusing my studies on either neurology or pediatrics. I really enjoy working with children and helping them out. This year I was given the chance to go and read to first graders once a week for about nine weeks. The way the children looked up to me really meant something special and cemented my interest in working with kids. Becoming any type of pediatric doctor
For most of my college career I worked as a nanny, assisting families in fostering a safe and fun learning environment for their children. Playing with them, reading stories, doing arts and crafts and running around at the park were among the many activities that I engaged in. Through nannying, I came to the realization that I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to work with children and toward their well-being; this was what originally sparked my interest in child welfare. Although I was set on working toward helping children, I was not entirely sure how or in what setting I wanted to work with them in.
I am a hard-working, confident and conscientious and have a keen desire to be a primary school teacher. The main reason I want to pursue this vocation is because I love the prospect of working with children, being such an important part of a child’s life is a real honour. I have been fascinated at how quickly they learn things, gaining an insight into their perceptions and how they see the world, the idea of playing an active role in helping them develop, greatly appeals me. Having a long term goal of working with children, I believe I am particularly suited to a degree in Primary/Physical education. I gain huge satisfaction from being able to help them learn and discover new things about the world. Nurturing a child’s development is an occupation that offers huge satisfaction, both intellectual and emotional. My ambition is to be in charge of a classroom, to introduce ideas and skills to the class and observe and feel their response. The teacher’s skills of good communication, patience, clarity and the ability to explain the world are very demanding of one’s intelligence and one’s p...
I believe that a good teacher should incorporate more that just academic issues. There also needs to be a great deal of learning about how to deal with their social and emotional development. This is why I believe that a child’s family is the most important tool in a child’s learning process. To develop properly, as a whole, children need a stable support system throughout, their entire lives. The most common and long-term place to find this support is within their family. This is why I have decided to become a teacher at the pre-school/ head start level. I feel that it is very important, during this age, for the teacher to involve the parents in the learning process as much as possible. As I continue to develop as a professional, I would like to pursue a master’s degree and eventually become the director of an integrated pre-school/ head start program. With this position, I would be able to develop programs to help the families learn skills needed to help themselves which will, in turn, help the child. One example of this would be to provide parents with techniques for helping their kids with homework as they go thro...
