Ever since I was young, I've always struggled with math. However, I never let it get the best of me. To start off, and to be honest, I never really had any success in math except for counting my money after a long day of work. When I was young and in Elementary School, I stayed back in first grade. My mother decided that it was only for the best, and that it would only help me. The reason why I stayed back was because I had a lot of learning disabilities, and I was always put with the students who had trouble learning, and was put with the students who had an IEP. But when I started to grow older, I starting finding many strategies to help me understand things better. In Elementary School, I always forgot how to multiply numbers so I always …show more content…
When it came to math, I always asked the teacher for help whenever I needed it, even if it took having to stay after school for extra help. For the most part, I was just a solid B student, however, I was just a C student in math. Since I have been getting C’s in math almost all throughout my school life, it doesn’t really bother me anymore because I’m so used to it. In tenth grade, I had a math teacher named Mrs, Foisy; she was always willing to help me whenever I needed it, and always gave me extra time to finish my tests and quizzes, and whenever I didn’t finish classwork, I was always able to take it home and finish it. I always had a tough time with graphing equations and Mrs Foisy always helped me understand key things to remember how to solve certain problems. The only thing that I was good at during my year of having Geometry was making constructions. In the beginning, I always messed up, however, I spent hours among hours studying on how to do them, and eventually it finally stuck in my head. I remember the next day we had the quiz and I got a one hundred on it, and Mrs. Foisy was so surprised. That quiz grade brought my grade up a couple points and it made me so proud and so happy. After that day, I really started feeling a lot more confident in myself. I knew that someday I will eventually get things in my head, even if it took hours of me studying to finally get it and remember it and make it …show more content…
There are many situations where I use math throughout the day. Even though these situations may not include complicated math, I’m still using some sort of math. One situation would include counting money. I seem to do this activity everyday because it’s something that I enjoy. Another situation would be reading time. Whether it’s a digital clock or analog clock, having to decide when to leave to go somewhere you may need to think about how much time to save in between and how much time you should give yourself to get there. Cooking is another example and without math, your food may or may not taste right. Measuring tablespoons and cups may not be part of your cooking routine, but it is part of mine. Through some point of the process of cooking your dinner, measuring servings and how much to make everyone should cross your mind at some point. Paying for things may be another example. When you want to go to the store and buy yourself something, you're going to need to know how much money to give them. However, some people like to go the easy way out and just use their credit cards. Some people might not think much about it but using that method might result with you getting into debt, and you can’t pay your bills, and you just might make your credit score go way down and that might result in having problems with renting an apartment etc. My last situation where I may use math might be my two math classes. It is
I have returned to college after being out of school for several years because, I am motivated to obtain my associates degree. I want to finish what I started years ago. When I was in high school, I became discouraged with my studies due to an illness and ended up dropping out of school. A few years after that I had an opportunity to return to school and obtain an Associate’s degree. When I started the program I was doing well until my illness returned. I found myself having a hard time juggling my school work, my illness and a job. I eventually started failing classes and ended up giving up again. At this point I had once again, let life’s challenges win the battle. Looking back, I understand that I failed when I returned to school because I wasn’t mentally prepared nor was I mature enough to deal with issues as they happened. Looking back at it now I understand that I made a terrible error permitting fear to take
For example, “Dr.Robert Whaples asserts that this time saved is even more valuable than eliminating a potential impact on rounding prices”(Mancuso, 4). In this quote Dr.Robert Whaples is explaining that the time is money . People just do not have time accounting pennies because it is take too much time. Moreover, they are prefer to using credit cards or dollars because it takes not that much time. Also, ”If the retail clerk and customer spend just 2.5 seconds per transaction counting pennies, those seconds add up. Those second add up to an estimated $700 million in wages that businesses pay retail clerks to count pennies”(Mancuso, 4). This evidence shows that people spending a lot of time to account pennies. It does not make sense to account them because it takes too much time. People do not like them. However, they prefer spending time with their family than account
3. Give an example of how/when you use fractions (including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and or ordering of) in your day to day activities outside of math class.
Leaving Leonville Middle School to attend high school was exciting for me. I attended Beau Chene High School, located in Arnaudville, Louisiana, in 2013. Entering Beau Chene High School for the first time made me realize I had to set certain goals as a freshman and focus on making it to my senior year to see graduation. I’m a very smart, hardworking and dedicated young lady. My freshman and sophomore years weren’t as uncomplicated and easy as I thought they would be, but I pulled through and made it to my junior and senior years.
Although it is indeed difficult to overcome a math problem, there are many remedies that can be used to help students succeed. Before getting to any specific math instruction, however, you should work at overcoming any math anxiety the student may have. This is a real problem. The students who are poor at math have a real fear of it. Reading can cause anxiety in children, but math anxiety seems to take over their entire world, and when doing math, fear is their major emotion. It is first
Picture yourself sitting in a class not knowing how to do math. Math is very important in our everyday lives. Math is used in all of your classes; including chemistry, shop, art, or to find the percentage of any test grade. If you did not know how to do some of these math skills you are taught every day you will struggle with everyday thing you need to know. Take cooking for example, you need to measure and find the perfect amount of ingredients to correctly make a recipe.
Before high school, I had just been another student wondering how knowing the inverse of “y” could help me succeed in life. The first math class I took in high school was geometry. It was very different from all the algebra I had been doing previously, but I somehow managed to get an A every marking period. It was not the easiest class, but I believe that’s what I liked most about it.
Initial Reflection Math contributed substantially in terms of my academic success throughout the majority of elementary and middle school. Adding, subtracting and multiplying was definitely my forte. Although I was placed in advanced math classes in high school, I always understood math enough to do well in the advanced classes. Despite my success at math before high school, I always knew I was decent at writing and somewhat enjoyed it.
In second grade, I once hid in the bathroom because I didn’t want to go to math class. The way math was being taught in my school made me feel incompetent. We were asked to memorize facts, which made no sense. I wished that the person who invented math was never born. It was only later, when I went to Star Academy, that I realized how poorly math is being taught in school.
My enthusiasm and the strongly committed teachers I have encountered in my life have attributed to my success in math and science. Prior to going onto ninth grade, my Math classes dating back from middle school were never mentally straining. Math appealed to me because in eighth grade, my math teacher, Dr. Christopher, would encourage her class by recognizing our achievements with small rewards such as candies and ice cream passes during lunch. Her actions sparked my interest in math. I have a natural regard for math and science. By breaking down math problems step by step, I can better understand them. ...
Math is probably one of the only subjects that I have really struggled my whole life or more accurately, all my years being in school. Math has been such trouble and really challenging because I cannot really remember mathematical formulas and problem solving methods. It is actually a real struggle when taking a math test or exam, especially a final exam. Trying to remember all those methods and formulas, it makes it hard to think and focus on finishing up all the problems on time. Even though I am often am
"Amy, you are really getting great at memorizing you times tables," said Mrs. Field, my first grade math teacher, "here is your sticker, and I will put a star next to your name for finishing the 3's times table!" I loved receiving my stickers and I especially loved getting a star next to my name. These small acts made me feel so special, that I had really done something great. This is how I remember my teachers from kindergarten until the fourth grade. Every teacher I had was encouraging, loving, and supportive of each student that they taught. If one student fell behind, the teacher made extra sure to teach and re-teach the subject until it was understood. Once I entered the fifth grade and into middle and high school, each teacher that I had tried to be encouraging, loving, and supportive of their students; however, my teachers often had too many students to give the individual attention that so many children need. When I began to fall behind in certain subjects, my teachers tried to help but were often unable to teach and re-teach, because they had no choice but to continue on with their lesson plans. I continued to fall further and further behind; therefore, I had to spend many hours after school working on my homework problems with my parents. Up until the fifth grade, I attended private school with about 15-20 students in my class; from the fifth grade on, I attended public school with about 30-35 students in each of my classes. This high number of students in my public school classrooms had a negative effect on my learning experiences.
Some people think they do not need to use math in every day life, but if they look in their life, they can find many applications. According to Man Keung in the article “"Mathematics: What Has It to do with me?"” “In fact, we are basically living in a world of mathematics. Mathematics is “present in our surroundings, affecting our daily lives directly or indirectly. Its past, present, or, we can even predict, its future, will always be fascinating and exciting”” (91). This quote means the math is everywhere in people life from past until future. For example, they use math when they want to go to shop. When a person gives a seller money, he or she does calculations and takes the rest of the money. In this situation, people use one or more operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Another example of using math in the daily routine is solving problems. If a person has a problem, he or she needs to use the logic. Logic is the science that studies the general rules and laws of a human right to think. People use logic to see if the thing is right or wrong. When they start to solve the problem, they need to think for serval solutions and do the best solution they found. If students have a hard assignment, they need to focus their assignment until they understand, which shows using logic. All in all, these are some math applications people use in their daily
I used to struggle with multiplication tables to the point where I would fail all of the in class quizzes. With plenty of practice and help from my grandmother, I have improved greatly in that area. This helps me complete more difficult math problems much faster. I have learned the concepts behind math as well as the math itself. In my calculus class, my teacher would always explain how a formula was created and why it works before he explained how it was used. This has helped me see the deeper purpose of math instead of just the surface, where we are told to do a problem without really knowing why. Another specific math topic that I have struggled with in the past is factoring. When the concept was first introduced to me, I was so confused that I got every single problem wrong. I asked for help every time but I just did not understand how someone could figure out the numbers off the top of their head. Since then, I have done hundreds of factoring problems in order to practice. Now, I get almost every problem right. I purposefully did these problems so that I could improve my skills, since I knew I would need them in the future. Overall, I think I have also improved my patient with math. I am able to think critically about a problem and figure out why I’m getting it wrong instead of instantly getting angry and giving up. That’s also a good skill to
In all my life, mathematics is the one subject which I avoided like a plague. When I was a kid, I almost always make sure to avoid this subject although it was required for me to study it. Seeing as I struggled at it, I never gave importance to its uses and usefulness. I thought that it was just one subject which I needed to pass and it is never important for me in the future. As time progress, my hatred for it did not decrease, rather, it increased more because the difficulty only increased. There was a time in my life that I wanted to just say, “I quit, this is impossible”, and look for all reasons I could find for the sake of never approaching the subject again. But, fate came and made me come to the realization that math will be always
